Malbec beef 3. Chorizo and patatas bravas Price per empanada: $2.75 I ordered the first and third and I was completely won over. The bacon, dates and goat cheese one was just like the pinxtos from Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba in empanada form. AMAZING. The chorizo and patatas bravas was actually 20% off per their lunch special and was much more like a traditional empanada; savory, hearty and flavorful. They all come individually wrapped and labeled, but also have their own unique shapes as well. Great organizational strategy! I would easily order either of those two again, but I'm super intrigued by some of their other flavors like sweet corn and that sinful Nutella and banana combo. They all sound delicious! My Argentinian brother in law makes fabulous empanadas thanks to his family owning a bakery back in the motherland...but...he does not make as exciting & inventive flavors as 5411! They had some really cooley high harmony combos I had to tune into. Bacon, Date & Goat Cheese - This is like a dessert in a tiny pocket. I'm getting this every single time I hit up 5411! It's sweet and melts in your mouth. BBQ Chicken - A classic and although not my favorite of the bunch, this made me feel like I was eating a somewhat stable dinner and it is tasty. Sweet Corn - Corn, mozzarella cheese, sauteed onions, béchamel sauce and nutmeg. Another very savory empanada that I was completely on board with and would get again in a flash! WHY HAS NO ONE TOLD ME ABOUT THIS PLACE?! A friend recently suggested we go here for lunch on a dreary Monday afternoon, and I obliged because I'd passed another location a few times. There is paid parking on the street nearby, and some free street parking if you're willing to park in the nearby neighborhoods and walk a block or two. Once I actually stepped inside 5411 Empanadas, I was completely blown away by how many different types of empanadas and the fabulously low prices that were paired with each one. One can choose sweet or savory, ham and cheese or spinach and cheese, chorizo, macaroni... the possibilities are almost endless. I am a big sucker for macaroni and cheese, so I chose the Mac and Cheese empanada, along with a chorizo, bean, and egg option, and a Nutella and banana one as a little lunch dessert. Why not, right? All three of those together ended up being $9 + tax, which really isn't bad for basically a full lunch and dessert! The guy working behind the counter was extremely nice as well, which is always a really great part of visiting any eating establishment. 5411 does a really good empanada. It's more of a quick bite or take out spot, but that works well with our current climate. I have only been once, and got a few empanadas. You can't go wrong based on my experience (the empanada shell is terrific on its own), but the one empanada I would make sure you get is the bacon date and goat cheese. I really loved coming here by myself on a Friday night to eat my empanadas and sip on my Argentinean mule. Nothing but good vibes at this place! However, the food was average. I have some dietary restrictions so I didn't get the pork based empanadas which I've heard are much better. I got the Malbec Beef, Ratatouille and the Mac and Cheese. My wife had ordered before for expedience. She's a learning specialist in an elementary school And seems to have no free. She can take a minute here and there to eat the empanadas. Three together make a meal. These empanadas are delicious! If you have never had them, think pierogis, piroshkis, kreplach, or chinese dumplings filled with a variety of insides. I especially recommend the beef (ground), ham and cheese, spinach and cheese, caramelized onion & cheese, and chicken curry. All were fantastic! The malbec beef was like a decent beef stew but not as special. The only one Iwe had that II would not recommend was the sausage, black bean, and egg, which seemed a little on the over-spiced side (cumin?). Each empanada only cost about $3, so no worry about ordering 3-4. It's still a great value. We ended up cutting several in half to share more varieties, which also worked well. I loved all of them but the mac and beef were probably my favorites. The only drawback is the wait time. In fact, for a restaurant that has made the top empanadas in chicago list, I was surprised at the results. I had the melbec beef, bacon dates & goat cheese, chorizo & patatas Bravas & the spinach & cheese. I also got an aide of the chimichurri sauce. What's an empanada without chimichurri? The only one that truly made me want more was the bacon, dates and goat cheese. It was fantastic. The others were a just blahhh. I also think empanadas should come with your signature sauces, and they shouldn't be used as an add on. That's just my personal view & has nothing to do with my rating. I believe that 5411 Empanadas is a highly underrated restaurant in Chicago for quick bites. I had the opportunity to try the empanadas 3 years ago, and they were certainly unforgettable as I brought my family members back to try the deliciousness. The name of the restaurant is very interesting as 5411 stands for the international dialing code for Buenos Aires, Argentina. Since 2014, the restaurants has made changes including an empanada mural on the outside and cute aesthetic additions. I also learned that it has expanded to other location in the city as well. There are a myriad of options on the menu including many vegetarian options which I always appreciate. The cool part is each empanada is folded in a unique pattern in order to differentiate them. I ordered the Ratatouille, Caramelized Onion, and Sweet Corn empanadas. My favorite was the Sweet Corn since I love those flavors; however, I also enjoyed the Ratatouille since it was not filled with cheese and was refreshing change from the other two empanadas. My cousin ordered the Chorizo and Patatas Bravas and raved about the deliciousness of the Patatas Bravas. I would also highly recommend ordering the sauces especially the Chimichurri sauce. The server was nice enough to give us both the sauces for no charge; however, for $1 extra, they are a great addition to the empanadas. They have a nice big chalkboard with all your empanada options and small handheld menus to browse as well. The girl behind the counter suggested 1-2 empanadas for a snack and 3-4 for a meal. I took that helpful information and decided on two savory options and a sweet empanada for good measure. This was a good amount of food, but let's be honest, I could have devoured probably five more they were so delicious. My order: - Date, bacon, and goat cheese - Malbec beef - Nutella & banana Yum. Yum. And Yum. I loved them all. The date-bacon-goat-cheese had the most interesting flavor but they were all really really delicious. I am a fairly new empanada fan, and for some reason this year I keep finding myself near empanada stops...or are they finding me? Empanadas at 5411 are soft billowy pie dumplings. Loaded with meats and cheeses, both savory and sweet, I ordered one beef and one spinach/cheese. It was suggested that two make for a nice snack and three make for a meal. The beef was melt-in-my mouth soft, and I think it had large chunks of onion or garlic mixed in. My favorite was the spinach and cheese. It was so ooey gooey delicious, and each bite was packed with the perfect mix of veggies and mozarella cheese. The location itself is super duper clean and pretty small with only a few tables. I absolutely loved the giant wall mural of the empanada truck, which is a photo of the actual food truck that started the whole business. It takes about 8 minutes for them to be freshly baked so be prepared to wait a bit. Otherwise it was also pretty quick. I can't recommend a particular empanadas as they are all very different. I enjoyed the Nutella & banana one, the BBQ chicken, and the egg/bacon/cheddar empanadas the most. You might find others you prefer. The accompanying sauces are very good! My only gripe is they don't really have anything else other then empanadas. So be prepared to ONLY eat empanadas. But that just means they are specialists. And they do a good job! After having 5411 a few times I've come up with my go to order which consists of 4 empanadas (seems to be a perfect size for one person): Beef-classic, good, juicy beef flavor mixed with veggies Mac & Cheese-you can actually taste the quality of the multiple cheese used in this empanada and i almost wish I could get a bowl of it Bacon, Dates & Goat Cheese-such a flavorful combo, leans towards the sweet side, but delicious nonetheless Siracha Pork (seasonal)-Awesome pork flavor, not too spicy, seems to be a rotating flavor but if they have it, I would recommend While all these are tasty on their own, do NOT forget to get a side of the chimichurri sauce! The flavor from this sauce enhances every single one of their empanadas no matter the combo (well maybe not with the banana/nutella but still...). I shared these two with my son once I got home because I wanted to eat them while they're still warm. I love the flavors of the Malbec Beef. The meat was so tender and so flavorful. No longer do I have to hope that I'll catch their roaming truck somewhere in the city to devour their tasty empanadas! Their new space is perfectly sized for a quick nosh and you can wash it all down with a beer or even an espresso (Intelligentsia) from the bar. My favorite thing about 5411 Empanadas is their empanada crust. It's perfectly fluffy and baked to a golden brown hue. The spinach and cheese is my fav. followed by the mushroom, thyme and blue cheese. For those with a sweet tooth, they make their own alfajores. Yum! My only gripe is that they charge for the sauces that essentially should accompany the empanada. I mean, they go hand in hand, like bread and butta! You're gunna wana dip your fluffy empanada in some sauce! The first sauce should come complimentary with your empanada. If you like a lot of sauce, they can charge for the second and third. I am absolutely addicted to this place and if I could I would eat here every single day. They have some of the best tasting empanadas I have ever had. Most recently my friend and I binged and ordered pick up and went with the BBQ chicken, ham & cheese, beef, malbec beef, bacon dates & goat cheese, chorizo egg & black bean and of course got the banana & nutella empanada. They were all perfectly cooked, and still warm by the time we picked up our order. I love that the box they come in for carry out has a description along with pictures of each empanada so you know which one is which. I have to say my favorite was the ham & cheese, sooooo much cheese! The side of chimichurri sauce was a perfect addition to the meal and tasted good with each one I tried it with.
