Went here because a friend recommended this spot as a quick bite before bowling nearby and I enjoyed it! The food was very reasonable price and I felt very satisfied with the amount of food. The staff were so kind, and they allowed us to still remain in the restaurant after closing, and even insisted for us to stay and eat. The restaurant is like a small mom and pop shop, so seating options were a bit limited, but since we were the only people, there was no problem finding a seat. I especially liked the Chicken Panini! The melted cheese and toasted crunch made the perfect blend of warm texture with delicious taste. It's a panini, and you really can't go wrong with it. The cheese fries were also good too, but unfortunately the cheese got cold and so they were solid at some point which isn't as tasty as having melted cheese fries. Nevertheless, I liked eating them with my panini. We also got the Chicken Shawarma, which was equally as delicious. There was a plate option, but even just the shawarma itself was filling! I used to live a block from Pi-Hi, always seeing it as a reliable takeout option when I didn't want to cook or was too lazy to hop in the car after a long day. It was never the best Mediterranean food I've ever had, but always serviceable, above average at a great cost. Now that we're a little further away, I don't go as often. After my last two experiences, I'm not sure I'll go again. This time I had the Veggie Sampler platter, which is supposed to come with falafel, pita, hummus, babaganoush, salad, rice, and stuffed grape leaves. To start, there was no rice. Also, whoever put the platter together threw the pita in on top of the salad, making it soggy and just about inedible. They used to individually wrap it in tin foil, and carefully separate things out - not anymore. The tahini sauce came with a plastic lid that wasn't sealed on tight, leading to a fairly large mess. The grape leaves were great, though I wish there were more than too. But. hummus was average at absolute best, I might have been better off grabbing a tub across the street at Mariano's. The babaganoush was off as well, and salad was drenched in cream (or was that my unsealed tahini?). The falafels. You can't mess up a falafel, right? Yes. Yes you can. These were like brittle hockey pucks, as if they were made yesterday and reheated out of the fridge. One off night, hey it happens. But, this is the third below average experience in a row, and probably the worst dining experience I've had in years. A real shame, because this used to be a routine favorite. read more

We've ordered here a few times and the Mediterranean Pizza Pi is a favorite. It's crispy, delicious, and love the addition of shawarma on a pizza. I usually also order falafel as a side but not the biggest fan of the Tahini sauce. This is near Lane-Tech High school where they have specials specifically for students. The pita was really toasty hot and soft and the hummus was really something. This place is in a strip mall but don't let that put you off. They are putting out some really banging food. The staff all seemed really nice. And it's neat that you get to see right into the pizza oven. I placed my order over the phone for pick up and the staff was extremely friendly . When I came in to pick it up the shop is really small but has a few tables to sit at if you're planning to eat in. I actually really loved this place because of how consistent the food was. I recently went and noticed things have changed. I'm assuming they are under new ownership with the menu additions. Overall: If you are looking for a fast and super casual lunch or dinner option, definitely grab some falafel at Pi-Hi. The good: I'd guess to say this is probably the best falafel in the area. Not the best in the city by any means, but it's pretty freakin' good and comes out hot. The pitas that we got were stuffed to the brim (one broke) with hummus and veggies, and the sauces provided were creamy and spicy respectively. The portion sizes were filling and not too overwhelming, the menu is well-varied, and the prices are fitting for the quality and size you get. The not-so-good: While the food was hot and fresh, it did take quite a bit to come out. For a "fast casual" experience, we were there for probably 40 minutes total. The falafel was delicious seasoned w/Garlic, The baba ganoush was also delicious (but a little too salty for my taste), the hummus was ok and the dolmas was also very good but a little too salty. They also have 3 their own sauces, a hot sauce, tahini & a Garlic tahini (my favorite). Overall it was a pretty good meal. It's really convenient for me to stop by Pi-Hi to grab food and since I love Mediterranean, I'm happy that it's so close by. The chicken shwarmma is fairly good so I tend to get a plate of that or sometimes the combo chicken which also comes with kebobs. The hummus is delicious and since most Mediterranean places don't include hummus in their meals, it's a really good bonus! On the other hand, the rice is rather plain though - it's missing some spices that could take it to another level. Also, the garlic sauce that I opted for on the side did not taste like garlic at all! Falafels - does not compare to Pita Inn...I am a strict believer that Pita Inn has the best falafels in the world so I was dying to try the falafels here given that some reviews have noted that the two are similar. Nope! Sorry, but Pita Inn still trumps all. It's not bad here but it's just not comparable. Sweet potato fries - Hm...what to say. Definitely not the best sweet potato fries I've had. It could be a bit crispier and less burnt on the edges though with more flavoring that actually sticks to the fries. Dolma - fairly cheap. You get 6 small ones for $2. I wish there was more stuffing to fill out the grape leaves. Pi-Hi didn't live up to its amazing reviews for me in terms of their Mediterranean food but I do plan on trying their pizzas and paninis later. read more

Came here for Lunch today and had a very delicious avocado panini! Was light yet very filling, the bread was amazing! I have known about this place for years, I absolutely love their wood fire pizza, so I'd definitely recommend that if you're in a pizza mood. The fries are delicious and crunchy. However I found the sauces (Tahini and garlic Tahini) to be watered down and lacking in flavor, but the tzatziki sauce was amazing! Not sure why this spot has such positive reviews. I understand that pita sandwiches are typically pretty messy. I've eaten probably one thousand during my life (literally). This thing had already fallen completely apart before I opened it. Also I spent about a minute and a half discussing my sandwich with the guy. No tomato, no cucumber. We said it back and forth to each other like 5 times while maintaining eye contact. I watched him write it down. They put both on my sandwich (most of which i didn't really even get to eat because half of it fell into my lap as soon as I unwrapped it.) Falafel on the side was okay. But small as hell. I recommend going to Sultan's Market instead. Falafel are better, bigger and cheaper. The chicken shawarma is 1000% better at SM and again cheaper. Way better quality for cheaper. It's no contest really. Also this place was flooded with high school kids in there loudly playing nintendo switch and talking about Billie Eilish or whatever. Excellent place!! The people who work here are very friendly. They gave us a couple of samples of one of their juices while we waited for our food- the strawberry lemonade, which is sooo yummy and would be perfect on a hot summer day. The falafel here is moist and perfectly seasoned. We had two plates, the chicken shawarma and beef shawarma plates. Each came with hummus, rice, pita, and salad. Very flavorful, tender, with plenty of food. They make their own pita chips which are really tasty as well. Great addition to the neighborhood, we will come here often! read more

My friend says I give way too many five stars (what can I say -- I have good taste and know where to go...) However, when I brought him to try the Mediterranean Pizza and the Spicy Chicken Shwarma plate, he was amazed. He would give this place a five star too. I think I saw his eyes roll to the back of his head because the food is so good. The Mediterranean Pizza probably ranks as one of the best five pizzas I've ever had in my life. The wood fire makes all the difference. The dough is delicious, the meat is fresh and succulent, the sauce is slightly sweet, and the basil adds another level of freshness. I also enjoyed the chicken plate but not as much as the pizza because it was THAT good. I also enjoyed the falafal as well. The owner is also super humble, very wise, and very passionate about his business. He gave us dolmas and baklava and the baklava BLEW me away. There's something so different about his baklava compared to the usually very, very sweet baklava that I usually have eaten. Anyways, come and support this business! You can drive right by without noticing Pi-Hi, which is in a small strip on Western Ave. Very unassuming front with signage denoting a fiery flame, but this camoflauges the name, especially at night. We wanted to check out the only Chicago restaurant that made the Yelp top 100 in the US! Ultimately, good food on a budget, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. The owner couldn't be friendlier, which I believe encourages the glowing reviews. The meat in the beef shawarma is fine cut so every bite is flavorful. The plate is an excellent value and comes with rice, salad, falafel, hummus and pita bread. I loved the beef shawarma and falafel, but the hummus and pita were lacking something. The hummus tasted plain and the pita wasn't the freshest. A good wood-oven pizza has an incredible crunchy crust but their version was doughy. The margharita pizza was covered with basil, and the herb overwhelmed the flavors. The sauce was also on the sweet side. I would return for the schwarma but not the pizza. read more

If you are searching for a slice of Mediterranean heaven and wood fire pizza, the search is over. Visited this small restaurant last week and now I know what all the buzz is about! Unlikely combination of wood fire pizza, panninis and Mediterranean selections makes this place unique and able to satisfy a range of tastes. The moment I walked in I was warmly greeted by one of the owners, Ferris. The place was jammed packed with Lane Tech students and there were no seats available. He kindly let me know they'd be leaving at 11:30 and offered me lemon water. As busy as it was, he found time to speak with me and welcome me as I let him know it was my first time at Pi Hi Cafe. Every person working here is very friendly and attentive. Excellent customer service is an obvious priority, as well as fresh and scrumptious food. As I sat down, I met the other owner and he was just as friendly and attentive as his partner. He offered me a free piece of baklava which was ooey gooey piece of sweetness. Their passion for good quality food is evident as I devoured my chicken kabob plate which had salad, rice, hummus and falafel. I don't normally like falafel, this one you cannot pass up. The hummus does not taste very traditional and I have no clue what makes it different. I cannot wait to come back and try their other dishes. Thank you Pi-Hi Cafe for treating me like family. The falafel was killer. The wood fired roasted garlic pizza with a crispy on the bottom, bubbly and soft on the top crust was delicious and loaded with garlic. The "godfather" panini did not skimp on the toppings. The beef kafta plate, was freshly cooked and the meat was hot off the grill. Everything in this tiny little restaurant seems terrific, and the owner could not have been more friendly. Normally for an establishment like this, 4 stars might seem excessive but the customer service was legitimately so welcoming and warm, an additional star is required. He sat us down and answered all questions and gave us amazing recommendations. Brought a group of eight for dinner this week; solid across the board. Even though Pi-Hi is a Mediterranean cafe, you walk in thinking this is a pizza place, but everything is pretty tasty. I tried the sausage and pepperoni pizza, which was good and actually had enough meat on it to keep me happy...the fries, hummus and pita offerings were also good enough. The real winner here is the falafel, which is bordering on my new favorite in Chicago (although I have had good falafel at places like Falafel & Grill in Wicker or Taza in the Loop)...very fresh, tasty, not dried out at all, a winner. Prices here are very fair--I ordered some falafel and two individual pizzas and came out of this for less than $25. Me gusta! Service is great and the owner/manager (not sure which) on the night we were there was very accommodating. Also--BYO policy here is a little fuzzy, but for now assume that it's BYO if you show up close to 7:30 or 8 during the week and it's not crowded. We order 3 pizzas (they're 10" pizzas thin crust) and a few sandwiches. The flavors were great and the food was fresh but what made the experience was the owner and chef brining us free samples of grape leaves, baklava and spiced olives.... Yumm! Best thing we ate was hands down the falafel!!! Even if you don't like it, you gotta try it as they were perfectly cooked and came with some very creamy humus.
