I tried the Wicker Park location a few months ago, and quickly remembered that there's a closer location in relation to my apartment, so I had to give this closer location a try! On this particular day, I ordered via GrubHub to pick up my order while running errands in the area. I ordered three empanadas to pick up: a bacon, dates, and goat cheese; a chorizo, egg and black bean; and my all-time favorite, macaroni and cheese! I arrived a little early and the staff cheerfully handed me my already-made order. I love that there is a little outdoor patio area and quite a few seats inside, plus there were some desserts on the counter that I am interested in trying in the future as well! I stopped here right after a workout across the street at Fitness 19. One thing I love about this service is that you can very easily order online! I placed my order (truth be told) while on the elliptical and scheduled the pick-up time for another hour from when I ordered so that I would stay at the gym another hour. Pick-up was really easy since it was already paid for and my food was warm. I got three emapandas (sweet corn, beef, & the one with bacon, dates, and cheese) as well as a sweet dessert. This place is good, but not the best in the world. I will say that the empanadas were good yet small, and though I liked the sweet corn and the beef, I do not thin the bacon, dates, and cheese empanada was worth the hype I read about. As an empanada aficionado but also a person who neither lives nor works anywhere near food-truck territory, I was thrilled to hear that 5411 was planning to open a storefront. I hopped onto my bike and pedalled down there as fast as my fat legs could carry me. This was a mistake, because the store was hot--nay, baking. Several degrees hotter than the outside, which was 85F according to most local thermometers. And unfortunately, the complimentary water carafe dispensed no relief, as the liquid contained therein was the same uncomfortable temperature as the interior of the store. Not off to a good start. I was further irked at the discovery that sauces cost $0.50 cents extra. Come on, guys. Well...how were the empanadas, anyway? To use a cliche, good but not great. I was pleased at the variety of the menu, including several vegetarian choices. I ended up trying four: barbecue chicken, ratatouille, sweet corn, and caramelized onion. The sweet corn was my favorite, maybe coming in around B+/A-; the rest were in the B-/B range. The ratatouille was dominated by garlic, and the caramelized onion was too sweet for my taste. However, both were improved by the chimichurri (which itself was oily and not as zingy as it should be). The empanada shells are lighter and flakier, and less oily but more moist, than other shells that I've had. I actually think that I prefer the crunchier kind, although 5411's version isn't inferior, just different. So, to use another cliche, I wouldn't kick these things out of bed--unless a better option was knocking on my door. I have to say that if I'm going to ride my bike down Clark Street for empanadas, I will just keep going another quarter mile to Lito's, which remains my favorite spot. read more

And I was rewarded with the fact that, this year at least, all the empanadas were half off. Score! Normally they are not crazy expensive, but on National Empanada Day, you simply must go. 5411 has a great selection of both savory and slightly sweet empanadas. And even a few truly sweet ones. And all the empanadas have their own special shape so you can actually tell which is which. The empanadas are all baked, not fried, so you can actually feel a bit better about the healthiness of the food. I love that, as I'm nearly always on a diet. But thats just me, right? My dad liked this place so much he visited two days in a row. ...and that's saying something, because he's an international food snob. I kind of am too, but my experience is much more domestic. We discovered this establishment after seeing it on one of the many local food shows. My wife was already aware of their existence thanks to the food truck that is often parked near her place of business. I cannot say a single negative thing about them. The food is wonderful, and there's an empanada for everyone's taste. My absolute favorite is the ham and cheese. If you're going for the first time, try some of the unique flavors like bacon, date and goat cheese. Delicious. The staff is friendly and efficient each time, and even the clientele seemed extra accommodating. My stepmom has trouble walking/standing and people offered to give up their seats/table for her. That was just an extra bit of niceness you don't expect. I realize that it had nothing to do with 5411 itself, but I would like to think that some of the staff's friendliness and accommodativeness (is that a word?) washed off onto the very happy customers. I ended with these three... Bacon, dates, and goat cheese - Holy smokes the filling was SO delicious!! You can taste every single component. I'm not the biggest fan of goat cheese but I think it worked great with the bacon and dates. Sweet corn - Corn can never do me wrong. The creamy filling was a bit simple but I loved it nonetheless. Banana and nutella - Dessert empanada? Yes please. It was pretty much out of this world. Just get it! I love that they are served piping hot because it makes eating the empanadas so satisfying. Holding off on the last star because these are a little pricey and can easily add up in cost if you come for a full on meal and you may still not feel full afterwards. Before I go into detail about my poor customer service experience and why I've given them a low rating, let me quickly give my review on the empandas I've tried. Malbec Beef: Tender slow cooked beef, lightly seasoned and accented with sweet cooked carrots. Usually a winner, but on one occasion this flavor was dry and over salted. Used to be my favorite. (3 STARS) Ham and Cheese: Very tasty and comforting. Smoked ham surrounded by an elegant ooze of Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese with a touch of oregano. My favorite. (5 STARS) Bacon Dates & Goat Cheese: This one is sinfully delicious. Salt, sugar and fat... the dates sometimes bring too much sweetness. This flavor is consistent, but my mood for it is not so consistent. (3 STARS) Sweet Corn: A nice combination of sweet corn and rich bechamel sauce. Another consistently delicious recipe and definitely my favorite meatless option. (4 STARS) Caramelized Onion and Parmesan: They're trying too hard with this one by adding that "touch of nutmeg". I usually love to order empanadas whenever I see it as an appetizer on the menu at places like Tango Sur and now finally there was a place with a menu specializing solely on unique variations of them. I had to check it out. Ambiance: It was a pretty small place, with sort of a cupcake botique type of vibe. You order at the register and just grab a seat wherever. They have an awesome system for water where they basically just have jugs in the fridge that you can grab yourself and bring to your seats. It's perfect for thirsty/lazy people such as myself. Food: The empanadas were baked instead of deep fried so it didn't really have that super crispy exterior. It had a softer, more bread like texture. I thought it was interesting that they had a different shape for each type of empanada so you can tell which is which if you order a bunch. Ham and cheese - Super cheesy filling with bits of ham throughout. Almost reminded me of a sophisticated version of ham n cheese hot pockets from back in the day. BBQ Chicken - Just seemed like regular bbq chicken to me. It was pretty forgettable. Malbec beef - This was like a super tender braised beef. It had a stringy texture like pulled pork or barbacoa. Whatever marinade they used on the meat really came through. Chorizo and potato - I'm a meat and potatoes guy so I also enjoyed this one. The chorizo wasn't overly greasy and had a good hint of spice to it. Bacon, date, and goat cheese - Easily my favorite empanada of the bunch. You can't lose with the combination of sweet, salty, and rich. Banana Nutella - I wasn't really a fan of their sweet empanadas. The banana nutella was too messy to eat and overall it wasn't that great. We also got 2 types of sauces with the empanadas. The red sauce was really tasty, like a really good salsa. It had a decent kick too. The chimmichurri was pretty good too, but a little to herby for my taste. Overall, I wouldn't say these were the best empanadas I've ever had, but they were pretty good and there aren't too many spots that I know of where you can conveniently get your empanada fix. The empanadas are baked to order, so expect an 8-10 minute wait. There is even a sign that states the wait time upon ordering. I ordered the bbq chicken (chicken breast mixed in bbq sauce, onions, and cilantro), ratatouille (mix of zucchinis, red peppers, carrots onions, and mushrooms), and bacon, dates, & goat cheese empanada. I also got a side of chimichurri sauce. The pastry was cooked beautifully to a golden brown and until flakey. The filling was also really flavorful. My husband and I were married in October of 2018 and we wanted to do something fun for the wedding and we worked with 5411 Empanadas and their food truck to provide some of our favorite empanadas for the cocktail hour. We had traditionally passed hors-d'oeuvres​ inside the venue but what was so fun was having the food truck parked right outside and the guests going in and out to enjoy empanadas! We served the Malbec Beef, Sweet Corn, Spinach and Cheese, and Goat Cheese, Bacon and Date. The truck was so fun and everyone loved the empanadas. We had a couple of them and they were so good! In the U.S., all I have been able to find had been fried ones, but 5411 (the country and city code for Buenos Aires) has baked ones, like I ate in Argentina. Yay! I was out with a group of friends and we were looking for something filling, fast and tasty to grab and take home for dinner. I looked online at yelp (thanks guys :) ) to get some ideas and found 5411 Empanadas. I have to say I was excited when I saw the variety of different empanadas they had! I ordered 4 different types the bacon, dates and goat cheese, chorizo and papatas bravas, BBQ chicken, and spinach and cheese. They were all absolutely delicious, but I think my favorite was the bacon, dates and goat cheese. This one had a flavor unlike anything that I have ever had before and the sweetness of the dates helped balance the saltyness of the bacon!
