They have really Good food, street taco style. Not too much style in terms of presentation, just big portions and flavorful protein. I tend to focus on the steak, carnitas and lengua tacos. They also automatically include avocado in their burritos, which is a nice touch. You may have heard that this taco joint within the grocery store got shut down. For what?? I didn't get sick. I hope it's all of out their systems, by now, because I haven't been back in some time. Orale, walk around the grocery store and you'll see that everything's available for all things necessary for Mexican meals. I personally specialize in making quesadillas and tossing and melting chihuahua cheese on top of nachos. In summary, there's a small parking lot and street parking available. I've been going to the taqueria for over 25 years. I've even gone after a friend got sick and even after the health department shut them down for salmonella poisoning. Tucked away in the corner of the grocery store there is a little restaurant with delicious food. For just about $30 my family had 3 tacos, a burrito, a tortas, and a horchata. The food came out quickly and was packed with flavor. There's a small seating area and the night we were there, a Saturday, it wasn't hard to get a seat. Everyone was friendly helpful as we ordered. I've struggled in Chicago to find a taco that reminds me of being in Mexico. I believe I found that place close enough to my home. I will now become a frequent visitor. Tacos!!!! This little grocery store on the corner of Elston & Belmont has some of the most delicious tacos around. They aren't pricey, you can eat right there in the small dining area or take them to go. I live about two steps from Carnicería Guanajuato so it's very convenient for me to pop in for a couple tacos, perhaps grab a few things from the grocery and then zip home to gorge in the privacy of my home in shame. Their parking lot is insanely tiny and this place is always insanely busy so my tip to you is to just avoid the parking lot and find a street spot. You'll find the taco shop inside the grocery, off to to the side. You wait in line to order your tacos & pay, then when they call your numero en español you go up to get your tacos. I've lived in Chicago for over a year now and I've been trying to try as many Mexican taco/burrito places as I can. Each one is slightly different and has something unique. This place happened to be very close to where I was one night, so I figured I'd stop in. I went to the location on the map and was a little confused at first, as the place is actually inside a grocery store. The store itself has a lot of Hispanic groceries. I ordered a steak burrito and a chicken taco, since everything was so cheap (~$10 total). The burrito was good, though it doesn't come with cheese and sour cream unless you specifically request (and pay for) it. This is a downside for me as other places include it and in my opinion those are key ingredients. The chicken taco, however, was awesome. I typically stick to the steak at these places but it was definitely the chicken that I liked most here. I'm sure I'll be back here, and I'll be getting chicken in my burritos/tacos as that's what stood out. In the meantime, I'll probably see what else is nearby for Mexican food, so I have more to compare with. read more

I had driven by this store a million times but didn't realize there was a little taqueria inside until coming across it on Yelp. I know this is an annoying comment coming from a white person who's never been to Mexico, but walking in here feels like you're stepping out of Chicago and into a little piece of Mexico. It's not just the workers speaking Spanish but most of the customers too. The guy who took my order spoke English but the guy who called out my order number read it in Spanish. Bodes well for good tacos, right? Let me get my main complaint out of the way first. They don't offer chips and salsa in the cafeteria here, nor can you get a side of rice and beans. Just tacos, burritos and tortas -- a la carte. It's kind of a bummer that you can't round out your meal with a side of any kind, but understandable considering this isn't a full-service restaurant. I got three tacos: carne asada, al pastor and carnitas. The tacos came out piping hot and fresh (after a very short wait). The asada and al pastor were first-rate. Very fresh and flavorful. The carnitas was a wild card for me because, other than the obviously inauthentic version at Chipotle, I'd never had carnitas; very few taco places on the north side of Chicago have it on the menu. So I was eager to try it. Unfortunately the carnitas here was very dry in texture, especially compared to the other two tacos. It needed more salsa than the other two. Fortunately, the salsa here is really good. It seemed to be house-made and was a unique mixture of green and red salsas, or somewhere in between. I'm not sure if the dryness of the carnitas was a fluke or what. The flavor was interesting and I'm glad I tried it, but not sure I'd order it again here. Tacos average $3 each which is reasonable considering they are pretty generously sized. Based on reviews here it looks like the tacos used to be cheaper and prices went up recently, but I guess that's true everywhere. The burritos seem to be a much better value as most of them were just over $5. Next time I'll try a burrito (and probably another taco on the side since the burrito is so cheap). I also ordered a horchata to drink which was just ordinary, nothing special. I've had better horchata elsewhere. Overall, not perfect but definitely a worthwhile stop for your taco/burrito fix especially if you're around Avondale. And the Mexican mercado environment is neat, get some groceries while you're here maybe. read more

The deli guy laughed and the two shared a smirk, like they were cool. To be sure, it was a fine display of an innate poeticism that surely can't be taught, but what really stood out is that they were a couple of ignorant a$$hats. The owners must have a sense of the kinds of folks they employ, right? There's not getting around the fact that it's pretty off-putting to be subjected to that kind of thing when you're just spending your money somewhere. Anyway, if you're white, go elsewhere. I'm fairly new to the neighborhood and have been satisfying my taco habit with the large restaurant next door to this place. Little did I know that inside the local Mexican grocery store, off to the back corner, was a legit taco restaurant. This place only serves tacos, tortas, and burritos...but they do it well. The tacos were much larger than the normal, small tortillas that most restaurants sell. These were large tacos, each with 2 soft corn tortillas, packed with delicious carne asada, onions and cilantro. At $3 each, it's no secret this is the real place to get your fix. Well I give the store 5 stars for its selection of Mexican groceries. The hot food stand I also give 5 stars. Someone told me that the food is incredible so I decided to give that a try. Ordered my mom the Chile Relano taco. It was the size of a mini burrito. Best she's ever had. We got the steak and Al Pastor tacos. Best traditional Al Pastor I've ever had. Traditional because Iztatl Cochina in Jeff Park makes a very unique Al Pastor which I love. Traditionally Carniceria makes the best I've ever had. For the steak I'd rank it as the second best. Taco Max still reigns as the best steak but Carniceria is not a far second. Even after reheating it the next day still tasted very fresh. Usually I'd reheat my tacos the next day and they would come out chewy. This place is located next to Taqueria Traspasada which used to have great steak tacos. Ever since they opened up different locations they are not the same even the Ashland and Chicago Ave location is the same. I think they switched to a new food vendor which the steak is so different. They try and make it like before with the seasonings but the quality is not great anymore. You have the same taste but different steak. So yeah overall Carniceria is my new go to place. read more

I'm all about the deal and that's one big steak burrito for $4.04. Unfortunately I'm also all about the horchata and while ok, for almost $2 I'm used to getting 32 oz not 20. Also notice I said the burrito was big, maybe the largest weight to cost ratio I've seen in years, but I didn't say it was great. Like the horchata it was just ok. It was a little too sloppy and maybe a little more gringo than I would expect from a counter in the back of a supermercado. Not great but not bad. Now the salsa is about as ungringo as it gets. Imagine Ralphie from the Simpsons saying "It tastes like burning". Sarachi is as pungent as I can handle and this stuff is about 100k up the scoville scale from my beloved rooster sauce. Ouchie. I was also curious to try a meat option I don't think I've seen on a menu anywhere... mexican beef jerky!?! What what? Right? So I added a taco. I'm not scared. It turns out it wasn't reconstituted dried meat or anything too exoctic. It apparently was the same steak seasoned a little differently. And while delicious, better than the regular steak, I was expecting something totally bizarre so it was a little anticlimactic. OMG I love this spot. I was put on to this spot from a friend about 1 year ago, and literally now is the only Mexican spot I go for tacos, burritos, and tortas! Tried 4 tacos here and wasn't really impressed. Traspasada next door is far better. Cecina, Lomo, Tripas, Al Pastor, all were dry and chewy and needed lots of salsa verde (no roja available). Nice that they had the al pastor cooking on a trompo, and honored requests for the crispy bits. Service was friendly and quick. Weekend specials included grasitas/fried pork belly. I came here 7-8 years ago and remember the steak was pretty good, but sadly that wasn't the case last night. The food didn't really agree with me later either, but your mileage may vary. I'll stick to Traspasada from now on. The grocery store is ok for your basic necessities, they do sell a bottled tepache that I like to use in a pork marinade. The torta de asada (steak torta) at Guanajuato #3 is a perfect sandwich. Back before Kuma's, before Urban Belly, before Doug's moved across the river, before Taqueria Trespasada, I worked in this neighborhood. Not having a car, my lunchtime options were limited. Turns out that was a good thing; were it not so, I might never have discovered Guanajuato's. Nondescript looking Mexican grocery store from the outside, Guanajuato #3 sits on California just south of Belmont, right in the hub of the sideways T formed by Hot Doug's, Kuma's, and Urban Belly. It's a true hidden gem, serving up great fresh mexican street food for unbeatable prices unbeknownst to the droves of food lovers flocking to those other yelper faves. Walk in past the registers and make a right around the little wall and you'll find the taco counter. Lunchtime rush at Guanajuato is always lively. During the week the crowd is mostly spanish speaking, with builders and contractors making up a sizable chunk of it (and the occasional guero interloper that knows what's up). On weekends it's more of a mix of tradesmen and families. The tacos de asada are great. Also try the lomo encebollado (steak and onions), the chorizo (spicy sausage), the carnitas (fried pork). They sell a ton of lengua so if you want beef tongue this is the place to get it. The tacos are all about $2/ea and are the best I've had in the city in terms of straight up traditional tacos. Chivo (goat) is available on weekends, but I've never had a chance to try it. I'm sure it's the bomb though, considering that the last bad thing I had at Guanajuato was nothing. Show up early enough (before 10am iirc) and they've got super tasty, super cheap egg tortas and freshly squeezed orange juice to go with it. Now, back to that perfect sandwich. Yes, the tacos are great. Yes, they're up there among the best tacos in town. But Guanajuato's steak torta is what you've gotta try. Served with a thin layer of refried beans spread across lightly fried bread, a generous but not overwhelming helping of nicely seasoned chunks of asada, with super fresh lettuce, avocado, and a smear of slightly funky, delicious mayonaise...add a squirt of hot salsa verde and you'll find yourself a day or 2 later, craving another. It's 4 damn dollars! $4! Get it "para aqui" along with a mexican coke and sit your ass down at the counter so you can eat it before it gets cold. Though they're pretty good to go, too. The consistent high quality of Guanajuato's food, divided by it's price...that's a ratio few restaurants come close to. I'm hesitant to post this on yelp as I'm sure none of the current regulars nor the cooks are eager to have the place overrun by a bunch of guero food perverts, but I mean...to hell with it. A perfect sandwich for $4? People have got to know! Besides, I'm sure the workman like vibe or the overall lack of english being spoken will turn off a lot of y'all, so it's probably safe.
