For an event space, the 69th Regiment Armory is extremely versatile. Having attended two different charity events in the space, you can really see the armory's potential. It has a bit of an old New York character and feel, and with good reason given it's history. It's true that it is a very old, run-down building - but its capabilities are endless and infinite, as both the events I've been to have been very upscale and very different setups. read more

Easy to get around, plentiful bathrooms (if you're a dude, the line to the ladies room was super long), clean, comfortable. I've been here many times for different types of events, mainly 2 Village Voice Choice Eats events, Yelp Snowball event, and recently the Coffee and Tea Festival this year The layout of this place is really cool for expos. One floor for everything. Spacious enough to accommodate a large group of people. Downsides: The more I come here, the more I noticed how run down the place is. For some reason, it reminded me of an airplane hanger when I walked into the Yelp Snow Ball. The theme song of Pearl Harbor or something should have been playing. Anywho, it definitely seemed big enough to hold a small aircraft or a plane filled with Yelpers - you decide. The entrance way into the girl's bathroom was so narrow, you could tell it was meant for an age when people were smaller...like pig mes or cavemen. It was fairly clean for the most part, but four working stalls all night long had you wondering if you were balls-y enough to try to make a run for the men's room when no one was looking. It's really a great space to have a dinner reception or a small wedding since the acoustics were pretty awesome. The history along the walls depicting those that served and died in 9-11-01 was really a solemn reminder that we are only able to be enjoying ourselves at our Snow Ball because of those who sacrifice for us every day - our men and women in the armed services. read more

Was here for the Yelp Snow Ball event. This review is for the armory only. Large space like a gymnasium with awesome outside architecture. If you are a military history buff this place is like a museum, with artifacts, pictures, uniforms, weapons, medals, etc, and is a great place to learn about NYC's military endeavors. This venue deserves a 4 star for all the history, patriotism, and honor behind it. You can see the building hosts some window display of honors and stories behind different war times. The venue itself is as big as a basketball stadium so it can easily be transformed to host a big party, concert, etc. I came here for the Yelp Party and it served the purpose. I do wonder if it is possible to renovate this place and make it a bit more upscale. I gave it 3 star because this is not where you come for glamorous, trendy and upscale parties. read more

My tummy is preggers with food...good food though so I don't mind spending 9 months with that baby in my belly :) The Village Voice Tasting event was a success! YUM! Little did I know that the armory used to house the Knicks games back in the day and in 2003 was where the Victoria Secret Fashion show was set. I never knew what this place was everytime I passed by...looked like a high security secret government hideout. Who knew a building that was built in the early 1900s could have such flair. :) I came here for one of the best tasting events I've been to in NYC hosted by the Village Voice....it's one of the best because they practically said here are a smorgasbord of open bars and open food stands go for it! It's practically all you can for 45$. ...and so I did! It was a jungle of hungry people and there were practically herds of them crowding around small tables serving each restaurant's specialty. Beer! I tried a Leffe...and it was a great companion to many of the foods the restaurants were giving out...many were pretty heavy and meat heavy. I also tried a new ale called the Ragging Bitch...interesting but I wasn't sure if I'd go buy it. Liquor...Svedka served up a good cocktail with gingerale and OJ...others were unremarkable. My favorites from last night were Motorino's Octopus salad, Patacon's pork Arepa, Dumont's chowder, Baohaus's pork buns, a pretzel place where I didn't remember the name of..and Del Posto's choc. covered icecream pops....I don't think I left any out. Many of the restaurants ran out of food by 9pm and I could no longer injest anything else or else I'd burst :) But great venue and great event, I can't wait for next time!!! read more

It is NY coffee festival for the weekend and they held it here. Very spacious inside with many exhibitors. I was not only able to brew coffee by myself (with the help of instructor, very helpful), but also tried a variety of coffee. Starbucks also had a special reserved place with a very cool brewing machine. There was a food court to the very end of the hall with macarons and sandwiches. read more

Hidden gem in the 69th Regiment Armory is the Garryowen (Soldier's Bar) club. The bar is open Tuesday and Thursday nights only after 6:00 PM. The Bar is themed after the regiment's Irish and military heritage. It's a full bar including draft and bottled beers. The beers cost about $5.00 dollars and the mixed drinks about $6.00 dollars. To gain access to the bar you have to be a guest of an active or veteran member of the regiment. Or just knock and they might escort you in. read more

I have been walking by the 69th since I was a little kid. Love the place. I am reviewing the Garryowen bar, and I love it. It is basically an Officers Club, so its a little hard to get in. But if you find an opportunity as a guest definitely go. Very old school and like I said an "Officers' Bar", someone here else said a soldiers' bar - it is not. Meaning there is a certain level of dress you should wear here. Coat and tie is nice , but not required. It has a very dignified ambiance. read more

Massive venue with a lodge/ high school gymnasium feel. The outside of the building is stunning. The inside is ...not quite what you would expect based on the exterior. An excellent location for a YELP event where vendors are situated on the outer rectangle and it gave plenty of room for people to mingle/ line up waiting for lobster bites/ whatever was next to that station! It sort of felt like a Catholic church with the seating on the upper level looking down at the masses. Mixed with an urban loft with a massive freight elevator. With part gymnastics practice hall and a splash of a masonic lodge. (Strange but it worked!) A very convenient location that can hold a LARGE group of people! read more

I've now been to a couple of events here - once in the fall for the Village Voice Choice Eats, and most recently for the Yelp Snow Ball. It's a very big open space, pretty conveniently located (just a bit north from Union Square and just a tad east from Madison Square Park). It's nice for a large crowd because it has such high and open ceilings, making it not feel too clausterphobic. Always a plus. The building itself is beautiful from the exterior, though pretty sparse on the interior. While nice for an event, the event coordinator will have to make a bit of an effort to spruce it up and give it a little something extra to take on a festive air. And warning, the downstairs (where the restroom is) is a bit chilly when cold temps arrive. Brrrrrrr! read more

Weird place to have a show. Good acoustics but with all the seats being set on the floor it is impossible to see beyond the third row. Maybe fancier shows bring their own stadium seating? I guess it's good for a rave, but I'm too old for raves. read more

argh. if only work had let me out early enough to take advantage of elite hour i probably would have been able to try more of the delicious sounding food that renee raved about, as well as snag the super awesome lunch boxes!! but alas, i showed up with the masses (and i do mean masses) at 7:15. i got to try 3 foods (yummy cheesecake, the falafel, and some sort of carrot curry). i sipped on some hard cider (yummy) and ginger ale (i discovered i like the fake variety much better) it's always fun to hang out with other yelpers. however, i do think last night was a bit over-ambitious. everything was too crowded (in line for food for 15-20 minutes each line??) and i felt like a lot of the food ran out by 8pm. :( also, the food vendors weren't able to really display their signs that well. i sampled food and had no idea which restaurant it came from. i can't say the event was "as good as it gets," but i do think that yelp is still finding its legs and doing a darn good job. :) read more

Came for the VIllage Voice Choice Eats event here and the line to get in was about an hour long. There were a lot of restaurants represented and they had a few goodies for you to take away. Not sure if it was worth the $50 entry fee but it was fun. The armory itself is a large space and is set up for this kind of event. read more

Although a bit old school, this place has tons of potential to host any event possible. From roller derby to trade show to Yelp Snow Ball, this place can host parties of almost any size or function. The only down side is that the bathrooms are downstairs and that can be daunting after you have a few drinks in you! I've been here a couple of times for the craft beer festivals they hold here, and it's a solid event space. I do like the fact that they have a giant bathroom in the basement with what appears to be an infinite number of urinals. This also means they're incredibly and awkwardly close to each other... It's a huge space, and the staff here seems to have a good strategy in place to get people in and out in an orderly fashion. They do need to improve on their temperature control though, it's always freakin' hot in here. Back in March the heat was on full blast throughout the event, and in June the AC was non-existent. read more

I went to the Village Voice Choice Event at the 69th Regiment Armory and I must say I had a blast! The venue was set up perfectly and it flowed properly, the best thing was there was enough room for people to walk around and to get to all the food stations without much difficulty. The only downside (hence the one star missing) is the fact that there was only one set of bathrooms for women and one set of bathrooms for men and the ladies room didn't have many stalls so there was a bit of a wait. The other reason for minus one star was the fact that the armory isn't exactly accessible so I had to walk up some stairs to get in the building and to go to and out of the bathroom area and I use a cane so it wasn't too fun in that aspect. But besides the historical non accessibility of the Armory, I loved being in a historic building enjoying lots of good food with cool New Yorkers. read more

Been here many times for the Hand Crafted Tasting Co. NYC Craft Beer Festival. It's an older venue that could use a facelift / renovation, but it does the job. It's a humongous quadruple height space with plenty of room for tables of vendors and a 6 piece band. Downstairs are the toilet rooms, that are old but toilets and urinals are a plenty. There is also a lounge space in the basement with a commercial kitchen and bar where they usually have the Connoisseur or VIP area. The HVAC could use some upgrading as it tends to get hot with the large amount of people. I get why they keep using this venue... it probably has a decent price to rent, but I would prefer they held the festival somewhere like they did a few years ago at Basketball City. read more

The armory is a really interesting, unique event space. I attended the New York Craft beer festival there and found the space fascinating. The festival was awesome with an incredible selection of beer to try, though the hired out bartenders knew surprisingly little about the beer they were serving for the most part. Event staff was even nice and let us in early to wait in the heat on a frigid day. The space itself is really cool, it feels like the inside of an airplane hangar decorated with decorations from the regiment that is based here. There are even some cool display cases with missiles and stuff by the bathroom. Awesome place for an event. read more

Very spacious room that looks like an old airplane hanger. It could serve to be the foundation for many events: dance hall, parties, gymnasium, job recruiting fair, or a mini concert. Simplistic in every way, fluorescent lights 40 feet above you, gym/stadium seats on the 2nd level perimeter. Even though I used to live a block away from the Armory, I finally had a reason to go inside for the Yelp Snow Ball. The exterior is impressive and makes you feel like you want to know what goes on within. Given that it's called the Armory, the interior is what I expected it to be. It's a huge space for events. Apparently there's a shortage of stalls on the women's side. On the men's side, there were plenty of urinals, it was a little disappointing at first to see that there weren't any partitions. But, upon closer, frontal inspection, what appear to be just decorative flourishes on each urinal's side turn out to be privacy-protecting wings. It's an up-armored urinal. Five stars. read more

I volunteered at the charity: ball event here last month. The venue is fantastic, charming, spacious, versatile... everything you could want (well, this is coming from someone with limited event experience). They were very gracious hosts for a wonderful event that raised a ton of money for water projects around the world. No complaints! read more
