Ton of specialty items I usually would have to trek into Newport Market for. The bakery had marionberry pies, there is a deli section, and they have organic options! Lots of fruits, veggies plus plenty of gluten free choices too. The store was really really clean with a nice atmosphere and similar aesthetic to Market of Choice but seems to provide more value and less stress. The best part was my cashier Judy! She was genuinely nice to me, I had a great customer service experience with her. She really made me feel that local true community feeling, honestly how it should be. She was so nice when I mentioned it was my first time - she truly authentically welcomed me with such a kind tone and even walked me through signing up for their points system (much better than Market of Choice coupons this actually adds up toward your grocery bill)!!! We chatted about the store and its history a bit which was cool. I walked away feeling like wow, that was a nice experience! Rare these days even in Bend. This is a sleeper hit for me and is going to be my new go to. I told her I will definitely be back and I will. Recently converted to PEAKS, immediately raised all prices, so quickly that shelf price is often incorrect. While the people who serve customers are very good, it is clear that profit. Is the only motive. I now go to a 7-11 further away, nearest place just to get the daily paper and lower prices generally.

I'd say about half the store comprises 'regular' goods - canned soups, boxed pasta, sundries, etc., with the rest being interesting instant ramen/pho, spices, teas, candies and other not-so-regular stuff. Much of which you can find far cheaper across the street at Safeway, or at least something close to it. Not everything, of course, but if the local hotel/apartment denizens need a emergency package/can of whatever, not sure why they'd not go to Safeway. Also, and I'm sure this is just a startup issue, but a lot of the goods were unpriced, either on the items or on the shelf labels. Beer, some wine, no produce, a few dairy items, a frozen treat case. Newport Market this ain't. One feature, I'm told, is that they can order anything internationally. In these days of Amazon, I'm not sure how big a draw that might constitute. But maybe. Parking at the Westside Village shopping center is already a bit of a zoo and from what I can see, many of the commercial spaces are not yet tenanted. Those folks looking to go to Banger & Brews might soon be miffed at the difficult parking. A-OK. It's different than the norm here in Bend and that's a good thing.

I think the asian stuff they have leans more toward Chinese and Thai seasonings. I didnt see Japanese, Korean or Vietnamese items. There was also many packaged noodles. Service and selection both missing on the day of our mid afternoon Monday visit. So much less…read morethan we expected, given we were fans of the guy who owns this from the days we lived in Bend and he was chef/owner of a soup food cart in downtown Bend and then owner / chef at Barrio in two downtown locations (now Bar Rio next door) as well as Shimshon for Israeli fare which started as food truck and now bricks and mortar service counter at The Grove. We expected a variety of good eats as take out options here based on the marketing materials for Bodega so braved downtown parking specifically to go here to pick up something good to eat to take with us to the house we were staying at for a few days as visitors. Here is what is described in their marketing stuff: "We prep it, you take it home, and knock the pants off your family and friends. The grab-and-go meals and grocery essentials at Bodega are inspired by our travels throughout Mexico, Spain, Israel, and the Mediterranean. .. Worth the trip downtown? Uh huh. Satisfy those mid-day hangries? Yup. Best of all, we can bottle it, box it, and you take it home. That's the beauty of Bodega. " What we found in the grab and go cold case was a few plastic containers of two kinds of salad, one of which looked as if it had been there a while. The girl at the counter didn't bother to look up from the book she was reading as we walked in or at any time to ask if she could help even though my husband and I were clearly talking about our confusion for limited options for fresh take out and wondering if we were looking in the wrong spot. Finally we interrupted her reading to ask her about it and she looked up, answering our questions and when we asked how to tell which salad was the was freshest she answered that question too. We felt very much as if we were interrupting her free time. Maybe we hit them on a bad day, Bar Rio is closed on Mondays for example, and if the options are coming from that kitchen, maybe the low inventory was due to that. But the lack of service didn't help. On the flip side, someone walked in who works at another of the downtown stores, picked up a candy bar and she and the woman behind the counter had a friendly chat about the reading material. I think if you were working downtown and popped in for something like a bag of chips (big selection for such a small space), or soda or candy bar or package of cheese this would work swell. It may even work well if you are downtown anyway on some other day but Monday when they are better stocked to grab something to take with you. But for what we expected, helpful service and good selection of take away prepared foods, we found neither. It was not a return on the effort to find downtown Bend parking to to in.
