There is something very satisfying about a small town convenience store's. Watching men young and old hold open the door for ladies, smelling the coffee and ever cooking hot dogs on the roller grill shows small town life for what it is: families, people living together in harmony. Today's feature was freshly made apple fritters. Coupled with a handmade chocolate milk shake, life is good. The store holds basics for life: bread, eggs, milk, soda, beer, soups and other canned goods as well as all sorts of ice cream and frozen treats. There is little that can be needed, from matches to mustard, that the store doesn't have. Outside the gas pumps are humming while customers in transit replenish treats for their trip. I appreciate the presence of this store and highly recommend stopping in whenever one is in Arlington.

They also had lots of stuffed animals including a giant tiger displayed outside and a moose, which the moose was a cheaper price than I expected for its size. Also as you would expect since it is Vermont they had lots of maple syrup including sizes of bottles that would make Costco sizes seem small. Even as someone currently being a tourist, I enjoy browsing stores like this but typically will skip on buying much. I find you usually run into two different issues, first being poor quality items you buy and second being overpriced and often you get both. The highlight of this place in my opinion that makes it a little more than just a gift shop was the dessert and cheese part. Despite this we still did not buy anything but some of the treats did look very good! Service wise while we did not buy anything did lack any sort of welcome or anything said at all by staff. It does not take much effort to even just say "hello welcome in". If you find yourself in the area going to any of the nearby shops or other things to do you might as well pop in and browse at least.

I believe that the key to running a business is consistency. Run whatever kind of business you want to run but be consistent. The customer has a right to know what to expect next time, after his first visit . Any business can hit it just right and deliver a world class experience once; the key to a steady 5 star rating is to deliver that time and time again. Sugar Shack does exactly that. Their creemees are, quite simply put, perfect. First time, third time, eighth time, twelfth time. Never varying in intense maple flavor that tastes just like syrup right out of the jug. Never poor consistency. Always, always, thick and creamy and substantial. I did notice one difference late last summer; the size of the large cones increased a bit with no corresponding price increase. Prices for the creemees are super reasonable. Five of us went there the other day and the bill was pennies over $20. Two larges, 3 smalls. For a premium quality cone filled with plenty of ice cream, being sold in a touristy area, that is phenomenal. Don't like ice cream? Going there is relaxing and brings me back to being a much much younger version of myself. Born and raised in NYC, at 14 the family moved to a town in Upstate NY with a population of 1200. Sugar Shack brings back memories of little roadside ice cream places and snack bars and a slower, more peaceful, just plain better time. The owner and her staff (relatives if I understand correctly) are providing a lot more than ice cream and maple syrup and assorted delicious premium treats and foodstuffs.
