This is all.about the atmosphere. On a beautiful day the perfectly manicured lawn, the yard games, the marble patio make this a great destination. The inside really arrives for "general store", and it's cute, but they are far more focused on the bistro side: with the best chai latte I've had. They also have a full bar. As far as food- its expensive. The fresh bread is a step up from what I would expect, but it's not quite worth it for the food alone. (But combined with the atmosphere it absolutely is). Oddly, breakfasts and drinks are very reasonably priced. If I lived near this would be a routine summer morning stop. As it was, really glad for the stop at the start of a very long drive. read more

I recently joined friends for dinner here and was seriously impressed. The space transforms beautifully in the evening--though I have to say, my past breakfast and lunch visits have been just as great. We started with brussels sprouts and crab cakes, both delicious. For mains, our table ordered the fish and chips, a pizza, rigatoni alla vodka, and steak frites--and everything was fantastic. The pizza was especially memorable, featuring creative toppings and an incredible crust. My fish and chips were perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Everyone loved their meal so much that we couldn't resist staying for dessert--the Hapgoods Cookie Sundae was the perfect ending. Between the lively music, the cool atmosphere, super friendly server and consistently excellent food, this spot is an easy recommendation. read more

Stopped into this Hapgood General Store on our way to Hapgood Pond, part of the Green Mountain National Forest based on glowing recommendations. This place is a must visit! For delicious snacks, food or sundry items, also records and fresh prepared beverages and food made to order. So much to look at and enjoy. There's an indoor seating area and upon leaving I saw a beautiful outdoor patio with shaded tables and chairs to enjoy your purchases. Come visit! The owners reply to my original post is incorrect. Both the waiter and the manager told us that the soupy calamari would be removed from our bill. To date, after three calls and the promise to remove the cost of the calamari it still hasn't be done. I recommend that you check your bill very carefully. read more

On this lovely spring day we went to a favorite place we have frequented for over 20 years, but today the management was not very nice, was insulting, rude, and punitive. We wanted to eat on the outside patio, asked if it was ok to do so and were told yes, that would be fine. As I looked for chair cushions (that are usually stacked on a shelf) a manager (a man with a beard) very rudely demanded to know what I was doing snooping around. I said I was looking for chair cushions. He said they didn't have any more than the 3 I already had (2 per chair - 1 seat and 1 back, we wanted 4,) and said they were not set up for service outside - "that's why the door [to the patio] was locked." I asked (again) if it was ok to eat out there and he quite begrudgingly mumbled yes. A few minutes later a woman came out and very apologetically said we would have to bring our food out and clean up the table by ourselves; they would not provide table service. We told her that was fine and we again asked if it was ok to eat on the patio. She said it was ok, but we would have to "bus" the table ourselves. When I got up to check on our order minutes later a worker was bringing our order out to us. (I had given her a 33% tip when we gave our order and pre-paid. Maybe she was appreciative?) We brought our plates and service indoors when we were done and she thanked us. The manager was rude, inhospitable, and punatibe. (The staff was lovely.) The manager left a very "bad taste" for us. Maybe they would benefit from a class on hospitality? We won't go there again soon. read more

The food here is fresh, and the coffee and desserts are delicious. After its recent renovation, the little shop feels even more charming. We live nearby and often come here for a coffee or a sandwich after a walk by the lake. This little place used to add a lovely touch to our peaceful country life. However, what happened last week left us deeply disappointed--so much so that we no longer feel like coming back. It was around 4 or 5 in the afternoon on a rainy and overcast day. There was only one table of customers inside, with one or two staff at the front counter, two or three who seemed to be new, and a woman we hadn't seen before--possibly a manager. We ordered some coffee and desserts and asked for the menu to consider trying their new dinner items. But before we even had a chance to sit down, the manager rushed over and, in a serious and cold tone, told us that the shop was fully booked and we were not allowed to take a seat. She told us to ask the server whether there were any available tables. It was a very awkward moment. We understand if the tables were all reserved--we do hope the business is thriving. But as regulars, we were given the menu, yet no staff came to check in with us about whether we planned to dine in. And just as we were about to sit, being ordered to stand up was truly unpleasant. The manager's tone, attitude, and the way the situation was handled made us feel unwelcome. It's a real pity--we feel like we've lost a local restaurant that used to be warm and delightful. read more

Fun place to stop and enjoy a yummy bite to eat and pick up a few local food and gift items, as well. I'm gluten intolerant, and they have gluten free bread for their sandwiches. I really wanted to love this place. It has a "nouveau" (as in, too put on) country store feel and the wait staff on both occasions ranged from nice enough (trying to keep self-aggrandizing snootiness at bay) to genuinely warm and welcoming. Four of us went for dinner. The best things were the crabcakes, the kale salad, the pasta w pesto (really rich and yummy), the sweet scallops that were perfectly cooked (though my husband didn't like the puree it was sitting on, felt it added nothing), and the terrifically crisp Brussel sprouts. The desserts were, however, disappointing. As in, don't bother. Our server, was a terrific young gentleman -- friendly, accommodating, and go with the flow sort. He was terrific. (I hope he makes it to NYC!) On a second visit I was in and out, picking up a delicious chive scone. But, my last and 3rd visit is what dropped this rating to only 3 stars. We went just before noon. They nicely did make my husband a breakfast burrito (a big meh, said he); I say nicely because he was just under the wire of a noon cut off for that meal. I had a grilled cheddar cheese sandwich with turkey (for an expected upcharge), and sliced onion and tomato at $3 each! What? The tomato wasn't even ripe, was a measly 2 slivers, and maybe 3-4 thin strands of red onion. Where I come from we call that chutzpah. Or, grandiosity (back to that self-aggrandizing thing). Not even in NYC do fine dinning establishments or top rated sandwich shops charge 3 bucks for each add on of that sort, and are then so ungenerous. (For point of reference, Cafe Luxembourg charges $3 to add an ample portion of avocado to a burger.) I really think you guys need to rethink that one. The turkey also tasted bad; maybe too old, maybe time to toss it? I couldn't finish the sandwich. Again, really really wanted to love this place. Lovely outdoor setting to boot. But sadly very disappointed. Maybe should just be 2 stars. But, here's hoping this review gives them pause to rethink and review and improve. read more

As locals ourselves we try to support local businesses such as Hapgood. As I wrote in an earlier post, in the past their food was always delicious but in the last two years service has become unpredictable and they have discontinued much of their menu. That said, we were so glad to hear that they were bringing back Friday and Saturday night pizza... what a disappointment! The pizzas are tiny... basically single servings and the total bill (2 basic pizzas) was $47. Yikes! On top of that, the pizza was awful. The dough on one was so thick it was raw and the other was almost inedible because it was super dry. We want so much to love this place. It could be great again, but needs some work. read more

So torn here. I am sure this place has some killer eats based on reviews and has some amazing history, but we walked in, tried to shop and decided on walking out without a single purchase. How can you run a store and have zero prices on any items in the store? I am certainly not walking up to the counter and asking every time I want to know what something costs and I am frugal enough to care how much I spend on items I can buy in and around the area with plenty of other markets within a 10 mile radius. The Danby marble slab walkway on the exterior was super cool. Breakfast sammies look great here on Yelp. Probably passed on some yummy items. Ah well. That's my experience. read more

Loved the food and service! Fresh ingredients, snazzy drinks, and delightful dishes. They only have their standard menu during the off-season, but should soon have an extended menu with more options. The wild mushroom pizza was delicious, and the market salad fresh. Wonderful service from our waiter, Peter, who made the recommendations for us. Asked for the food "for here" and was not told they were about to close. We got our food, screwed little Poppy's chair in and then a young lady said, "I hate to kick people out but we're closing". I was enraged. I asked for five minutes and she obliged but man I would NOT stopped by if they're hours were accurately represented. If you have a baby, you get it. Again, food, great. You all know I do not dole out the 5 stars very often. And, this little country store does not fall into my 5 Star qualification category which includes a superior dining experience with impeccable service and luxurious surroundings. But, the well thought out food offerings along with the perfectly curated general store items mixed with stellar country charm make me want to crown them with 5 stars of glory. The food was to die for delicious! And the vegetarian seitan sandwich was the BEST sandwich I have literally ever had. The soup du jour of potatoe kale was complemented by fresh bread and the kale salad with butternut squash could not have been more tasty. The pizzas are all inventive and a great size to sample two or three. Then, dessert, forget it as you won't know which ones to pick. You can also order wine and kombucha on tap. Stayed in Peru for the weekend for some fall hiking and festivals and stayed down the street from J.J. Hapgood (three min walk). We went here for dinner two nights in a row it was so good! Everything was super fresh and seemed local? When you walk in there are groceries and specialty foods like maple syrup and whatnot. Good things to bring home as gifts. Then there's the restaurant / seating right to the left. Our waitress was so nice the first night, which made the meal that much better. We loved that the owner was there running the restaurant. Note to call and make a reservation at least a few hours early, both nights we had to and there was only one time available, it gets packed considering it's the only restaurant in town. Between the two nights we got: -pizza -soup special -wings -polenta -burger -cheese and meat board -pie Everything was amazing!! Even if you are just driving through, I'd highly recommend stopping by. Wish we went for breakfast. read more

The four of us tried several different lunch menu items. Chicken and waffles, chicken salad sandwich, French Toast Montechristo, and for the little one, a hot dog. The chicken and waffles was flavorful and was out to rest quickly by my starving daughter. The Montechristo was well assembled, and although it comes with a bit of Vermont syrup, I enjoyed it plain. The chicken salad was the one sandwich that I thought could be better. Too much mayonnaise drown out the flavor of the chicken and made for a mushy texture. The hot dog was a hot dog, sometimes you just need a hot dog to feed a kid. We all enjoyed the garlic aioli to dip the fries into. On the drink side, I thought prices were a bit high at $8 for a beer, $10 for a mimosa, and $12 for a Bloody Mary, but, they had what we needed so there you go. The place has a lot of character - especially the antiques above the shelves. Some signed very old Burton boards and what we used to call banana skis. If your hungry and near Peru, I recommend a visit. read more

We were visiting the area on a ski trip for the weekend and decided to eat out here for dinner as per a recommendation from our Airbnb host. However, our experience at J.J. Hapgood didn't live up to their reputation or our expectations at all. We arrived and it was about 30 mins wait time. We decided to hang out and browse through the little shop area as we waited, at which point an older lady started to follow us around the store, on her phone asking "are the security cameras on?". After a while she then went up to the cashier, and asked the cashier directly to check the security camera because of "all this going on" as she pointed to our group. We told them that there is nothing going on, we're just waiting for our table. The lady glared at us and claimed to be the mother of the owner the store. Most of our food tasted fine. One of our meals was the chicken and biscuit meal and it was extremely over priced at $20 (barely any chicken, just a gravy covered biscuit), for which we were billed $22 for it, and we ended up having to get the check corrected. Overall this place is pricey for what it is. As new customers to the store/restaurant, and visitors to the area, we were very displeased with our experience. With the unfair and unreasonable profiling and harassment that was forced on us, we would not recommend coming to this place. read more

This is one of those rare places that literally does everything well. The food is awesome, the vibe is delightful, and it really feels like a community center of sorts. I couldn't believe how many people were there chatting over breakfast on a Friday morning. If you're looking to get some work done, they have conveniently located outlets and good WiFi, and the grocery mart is also a handy thing to have around if you're looking for a nice bottle of wine, cheese, etc. Really happened to have discovered this spot. read more

Not what we expected... looking at the reviews online, the food looked awesome and was one of the highest rated "restaurants" in the area. Being from out of state, we trusted this and headed over. Well, this is definitely not a restaurant. After heading in we asked for a menu (pictured multiple times on this yelp page), and we're looked at strange. "We don't have a menu, just the items on the board" okay, this was a chalkboard with 3 sandwiches and a soup, compared to a 40 item menu we assumed we were getting. So we ordered the fried chicken sandwich ($10 online) which was actually $18, so $36 for 2 chicken sandwiches that come with potato chips, not fries. This being said, they were good sandwiches, not worth $18 tho. Also no prices on the board. The store was clean and they had some nice items but I would say that is all this is. A store with some baked goods and I couple sandwiches. Not even a deli let alone a restaurant. read more
