Gorgeous marble and the store signage

As an early riser, I wanted a breakfast sandwich that had that ambience that VT always has and this is it! The baked goods looked so good that I bought one scone to save for later. The breakfast sandwich was good but the outdoor dining area with its cool marble flooring and the sun rising was unbeatable!

Stopped into this Hapgood General Store on our way to Hapgood Pond, part of the Green Mountain National Forest based on glowing recommendations. This place is a must visit! For delicious snacks, food or sundry items, also records and fresh prepared beverages and food made to order. So much to look at and enjoy. There's an indoor seating area and upon leaving I saw a beautiful outdoor patio with shaded tables and chairs to enjoy your purchases. Come visit! We will surely be back to this historic and lovely general store.

Loved our breakfast at this cute and quiet general store. The food was delicious, the coffee was spot on, and very friendly staff as well. Make sure you don't skip out on this place!

Gluten-free ham, egg, and cheese! Incredible!

A great cafe with delicious breakfast sandwiches and very good coffee! So good in fact, that I came back again the next day for more! They also have a great curation of gifts, snacks, and pantry items. I have a gluten allergy and they had a delicious English muffin I had my breakfast sandwich on. Such a gem!

Low key establishment. Very friendly staff. We ordered breakfast sandwiches and coffees to go as we were headed back to NY. You order at a counter then sit in spacious sitting areas. They also offer a variety of general store items.

    Mussels and an arrancini appetizer

Hapgoods re-opened and it's super! They have a great menu and a professional crafting at the bar. Highly recommended. We had everything from mussels to pizza to chicken to steak. All were cooked perfectly.

    That's $47 worth... two 10" pizzas!

As locals ourselves we try to support local businesses such as Hapgood. As I wrote in an earlier post, in the past their food was always delicious but in the last two years service has become unpredictable and they have discontinued much of their menu. That said, we were so glad to hear that they were bringing back Friday and Saturday night pizza... what a disappointment! The pizzas are tiny... basically single servings and the total bill (2 basic pizzas) was $47. Yikes! On top of that, the pizza was awful. The dough on one was so thick it was raw and the other was almost inedible because it was super dry. We want so much to love this place. It could be great again, but needs some work.

Really good sandwiches in a neat historic town. Peru VT a welcome accident on the road to Acadia.

ORIGIN: Taylor and Courtney Bellemare purchased the cafe…read morethat was previously located at this site and opened as Colburn Cafe in February 2024. The cafe's name is in reference to the late 19th century hotel that once occupied the same site, which had been named after local entrepreneur Mason Colburn. LOCATION: The cafe is located at a busy intersection on Bonnet Street in bustling downtown Manchester and is attached to popular Northshire Bookstore. CONCEPT: The new owners revamped the previous cafe, threading connections to the attached, but separately-owned, bookstore. Menu items make reference to famous authors, while two interior dining areas are surrounded by walls lined with books. AMBIANCE: The cafe has three sections -- one at the entrance on Bonnet Street, another along a sunlit wall in the bookstore, and a third outside with picnic tables. The two interior dining areas are surrounded by books, highlighting the cafe's association with bibliophiles. Each dining option provides a relaxing setting to enjoy both bookstore and cafe purchases. FOOD & BEVERAGE: The sausage, egg, and cheddar cheese on sourdough ($8.95) served with a hash brown on the side was delicious -- so much so that I didn't order a different sandwich during my extended weekend in town. I did pick up a cinnamon bun ($3.50) and maple cardamom latte one fall afternoon, which was a delightful combination. SERVICE: I was first, and often the only, customer for four mornings in a row and was surprised to find service varied, despite ordering same yummy breakfast combination. One morning the breakfast sandwich was delivered fifteen minutes after the macchiato, which at that point was cold. The cheese on sandwich was not melted and the bread was not grilled to golden brown as other days. In general the service was transactional, rather than friendly, perhaps because the popular tourist destination attracts many ephemeral customers. TIP: The egg and cheese sandwich is customizable, with different bread, cheese, and meat options. The cafe opens and closes earlier than attached bookstore, so if you are eager to experience both you must coordinate. Many pastry choices appear to sell out by the afternoon, so arrive early for the greatest number of choices.

Unfortunately the espresso turned out terribly bitter and they didn't set out any cream and sugar to make it even a little bit better. Really disappointing, as Colburn has so much potential and looks quaint both indoors and out. Hopefully things improve!

Reviews did all seem to rave about their coffees though. It's a rustic feeling spot and a spot I could definitely see being a spot some locals are regulars at. They do have a couple small tables outside and seating inside too. Lastly for food wise they did appear to have some pastry/baked goods on display, that looked pretty good. Coffee wise their offerings are quite limited so don't expect a huge menu of offerings or anything like that. Iced coffee, hot coffee, lattes, cold brew and that's roughly it with some flavor syrup options too. My wife got a pumpkin spice latte and I got an iced coffee with French vanilla flavor. Service was not rude like others had mentioned but certainly not anything very welcoming or overly friendly. Drinks were made in a good amount of time. Now onto the reasoning for the two star review though, is my coffee was undrinkable until we got back to our place to strain it. Drinking from the straw resulted in an absurd amount of coffee grounds to be drank. Not exactly a great experience. Overall afterwards it was a decent flavored iced coffee but I'd skip out on returning again. The options nearby are limited so if you find yourself here hopefully you have a better experience.
