Incredible place! Going on our second year with this Gym. We have three boys of different ages and they all love it here. Went to a competitor to see if it's a good fit and it was so loud that all three kids wanted to leave. So loud, I could barely hear the sweet young man manning the front desk in the middle of chaos. A few minutes after leaving, we got a call back from 805 to come see their place. The boys walk in, and in unison said "this place" while Coach cowboy and I were talking. He told them to take their shoes off and join the class. It was "home"... He is more than just a coach. He cares about all his students! My experience was amazing and I would like to share it to others as it was a fulfilling one. My life was going down spiral between work days and kids school. Drowning myself into mediocracy and unfulfilling dreams, seeing my life vanishing between my fingers. Broken dreams and Netflix nights were my tombstone. Until one day while picking up a pizza , I noticed what it looked to me a happy hour bar, since every person behind the foggy glass were having a good time while being punch in the neck. Loud laughing and music capture my soul dead ears again as my crusty fingers got embalmed of honey desires. Feelings of inadequacy and low self steem were high on those previous moments before I stepped in the soon to become my new reborn sanctuary and lifestyle. After cautiously observing the environment of men and chivalry between brotherhood which I once belong before on my youth, I wanted to feel alive again as the emotion were a verbatim reminder of what my ashes used to be. I embarked on this new journey with closed eyes and surrender any thoughts of selfishness as they usually hide behind self-pity and lame jokes. As a 45 yr young husband and father, I've been enjoying the taste of sweat and pain while I'm being choked out by a 22yr young buck. My bruised neck and night muscle spams that I been enjoying at night before going to bed, it tells a story or being alive again. The musky sweat of my peers crowns my new found freedom and revived my pale soul back to a colorful garden if vitality and masculinity. Now I stand tall while dropping my kids at school knowing that I can North choke the PE teacher any time my kids gets a F while I grind my chiseled, fully salt and pepper beard. Great vibe! Not taking anything away from some of the other jiu-jitsu schools, but this one has a real workman-like blue-collar energy that I think lends itself to really solid training. Also, a great variety of belts, so you don't just end up going against all white belts all the time, like many places that focus on always cycling new people through. My son has been practicing here for a few months and he absolutely loves it! He wishes he could go every day and has already asked me if he could increase the number of days he can attend. He is very quickly learning incredible skills that the coaches teach at a pace the kids can follow. They are patient and keep the kids laughing and engaged. They have the kids demonstrate for one another and get involved with which moves they will learn and practice. The most critical thing I enjoy is the way the kids encourage each other and support one another. My son constantly gets pats on the back and "good job today" from older more experienced kids in the class, which is so great for his self-esteem. I also really appreciate the 1:1 attention the kids get from the coaches to ensure they are not only practicing the moves correctly but also in a way that they will protect and not hurt one another. Krav Maga is increasing in popularity in the United States each year. With so many choices offered by Krav Maga Association of America and International Krav Maga Federation, training in this intense Israeli self defense, combat, and fitness system is readily available. I was a student here for over 2 years and have loved every moment of the experience. The most impressive thing about this studio is the quality of instructors. I have talked to students from other establishments and they come here to train because of the high quality of instruction they get. Without a doubt, if you want your ass kicked then take a Krav Maga Level 1 course for a week. My first week blew me away as I was encouraged to kick, punch, knee, eye-gouge, and groin kick the living daylights out of my training partners. I was hooked ever since. Without a doubt the curriculum is also one of the most diverse. They have bag courses for fitness, fight class which include sparring, ground fighting, and my favorite, weapons class. Not to mention the special gun seminar, knife seminar, tactical pen seminar, and kid's curriculum. These classes seek to make the Krav Maga practitioner a well rounded fighter not just good at self-defense and combatives. It goes without saying that if you are in the area and want to learn something that is practical and maybe someday useful, then hook up with these folks. They kick your arse and smile while doing it, but when it's all done they are the friendliest people I know. read more

I've been training here for a while. Good instruction, particularly from the lead instructor (Jeremy Stafford). A great workout, and a lot of fun-all while you're learning useful technique. They also offer kids classes, and fitness classes that are tougher than anything you'll get at the gym. They offer a few classes for free, so feel free to drop in and try it without worrying about the cost. My only complaint is the one year lock-in to begin with (though you can pay up front for a discount). Still, most places around here require that. read more

I already left a review for 805 JJM Simi Valley. I'll re-iterate some facts. First, the professors there are highly skilled and qualified, both receiving their black belts from JJM! They both outwardly show care and compassion towards all their students and strive to not only make us better Jiu Jitsu practitioners, but better human beings. If you read some of the above commentors, specifically SUSAN R. she is bviously biased, completely wrong, and bordering on slander/liable. I have known Professor Mark for 10+ years and know him to be a hard working, caring, and upstanding individual. Mark completed is professional career and was given an honorable discharge, something he would have not got of her allegations were true. As for JOSHUA P. I was there the day he came in. He was welcomed and admonished regarding the level of training needed to participate in the days activities. JOSHUA became upset and stormed out of the gym. He was never treated poorly. Back to BJJ. I have trained at other academies and 805 is the best I have been to. Not only do we have amazing instructors but the bond/brotherhood that all the students have is second to none. After my long term experience in private training with Professor Mark Mirelis, I am compelled to write a review to highlight what a positive experience I and my children have had over the years. During this period of time, both my children and I have received what amounted to exposure to martial arts at the highest level. It was more than training. Professor Mark would always take time before and after training to sit down and discuss what the goals were for the day and always inquired of us how we were doing. He never hesitated to offer life experience advice which we took to heart. From the beginning, I wanted to know what I was getting myself and my children involved in. I discussed with him his background regarding martial arts as well as his previous life experiences. What I heard from him and what I discovered on my own was truly impressive. He is an honorably discharged Marine who had tours of duty all over the world. He is a three-time medal of valor recipient from the Los Angeles police department. He once saved a woman from a burning car after extracting her while the car was not only on fire, but had a live electrical pole fall next to it. Just this past New Year's eve, he was involved in a domestic violence shoot out involving a disturbed individual who came out shooting at every police officer arriving on scene. He successfully led a charge which, after was investigated the highest level of the Los Angeles police department, was noted to have used the finest tactics applicable to the deadly encounter. He has also volunteered his time to help implement more effective safety in defense of techniques for police officers in order to provide them with additional skills to protect themselves in the event of a violent encounter. Ironically, but not surprisingly, by being the first officer on a criminal scene, some of the people he has dealt with during arrest and others who knew that they could profit on his accomplishments have attempted to disparage his good name with sensational accusations and attempted to have media reports made about him to further their television ratings, all at the cost of his solid reputation. Fortunately, all of these unfounded accusations made by certain individuals and the press have been summarily dismissed when all the facts came out. Curiously, when people in the past have brought these issues up they have always conveniently failed to mention how these false accusations were dismissed at every level. To his credit, when I discussed these issues with him, he said that dealing with nefarious people was part of the job and it's something that he would never let defeat him. Regarding his martial arts background, he is a very accomplished wrestler having wrestled at numerous tournaments all over the United States, Europe and Asia. He is a third degree black belt at the at the Jean Jacques Machado Academy, which is considered the Harvard of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In addition to these accomplishments, he has authored numerous books on martial arts and self-defense. My children have been receiving instruction from Professor Mark for years. He has transformed them and both mind and body, while never letting them forget that the journey in bjj and in martial arts is not about your belt ranking but about your character. My children to this day never fail to look straight into your eyes and give you a firm handshake when they meet you. He has further taught them that all of the training in the world is no substitute for not continuing to be a respectful young adults and to always, always focus on their schooling. This is truly invaluable coming from somebody outside of our home. Furthermore, he has volunteered numerous times to coach them during their bjj tournaments. He always told them, "You will win matches but you will never lose a match as you will only learn from matches you don't win." I still use that saying to this day with my children. At the end of the day however, these accomplishments mean nothing unless you're able to be a person of character. He is a veteran who has honorably served his country. I have witnessed on numerous occasions other professors at various academies and other Los Angeles police department police officers comment on how he never failed to assist them or to lend an ear when they were facing a personal or work issue. Over the years, he has endeavored in several successful businesses and I have witnessed him being praised by his employees and has always had female employees assigned to high level positions. Ultimately, I cannot over emphasize how happy we are that he is the one that is leading me and my children down the martial arts journey. read more

I have been training here since September 2011 and have found the classes to be very practical, a great workout, and quite entertaining. I first came across Krav Maga a few years ago, but I delayed in taking it up because I figured the classes would be filled with intense, military-minded men who lack any sense of humor. Glad to say that I was quite wrong. The entire staff is great. They know their stuff and help you reach your goals, but also make the classes fun. If you want a boot camp experience, they are happy to provide that. If you just want to build some self-defense confidence, they do that quite well too. The student base is very diverse, both in age and background/interests; Krav Maga is definitely not just for those dreaming of law enforcement careers.
