I'd rate 8th Street Tavern three and a half stars. Sports bar with lots of TVs all around including one mega screen comprised of nine smaller ones. Draft list had a mix of some crafts and some macros so everyone should be able to find something they like. I had a house Pilsner. Staff was nice and attentive. This spot has recently changed owners/management and I have to say I'm liking the changes that they've made. Menu is updated and you can get some cool things like chicken pot pie, nachos served in a pie dish, vodka chicken parm pizza, and even a fat sandwich, in addition to some of the staples from the old hat like wings and burgers. In true sports bar style, it's a good place to watch a game because there are so many tvs, but also to grab beers or even have the staff shake up some cocktails. SLOW POKE - the only term I can use to describe the bartender here. It truly is shocking someone can functionally move that slow - she really needs to go. Stood for 30 minutes as she inched around the bar, attempting to flirt with men (cringe), take shots with people and stare into blank space. Finally when she gets our drinks - she makes them wrong (shocker). This woman is literally so slow she's losing out on thousands on a weekly basis for this bar. I don't think I can adequately put into words how special 8th Street Tavern is, at least not briefly. So bear with me. I grew up splitting time between Rhode Island and Hoboken (but further uptown) and never made it in here before I moved away for college. But when I moved back here after a long pandemic-forced break from going to bars pretty much anywhere, I had no idea that stumbling into the neighborhood bar across the street from my new apartment without cash (my bad) was going to lead to me finding my favorite spot in Hoboken (and maybe anywhere). The food is some of the best comfort bar food you can find anywhere, and in Hoboken that's a high bar. The craft beer selection is impressive, you can get big domestic draft in comically large and economical soup containers, and the cocktails are masterfully crafted --- there isn't a single bartender in the joint that doesn't know exactly what they're doing. I legitimately had my favorite birthday (ever) here. Fun and thoughtful events like Emo Night, Christmas in July and a special Monday opening for Game 7 of the New York/New Jersey Stanley Cup series have truly made this Devils fan's summer. And some of the staff are actually in a really good band (check out hey ashley on Spotify). Which leads me to my biggest reason for writing this review: The best part about 8th Street Tavern is the people inside it. Anthony and Mary have built a staff and an environment that is uniquely Hoboken yet so welcoming, and there's a really unmatched sense of community there. I have met so many wonderful people there and even three years later I've had people introduce themselves with "hey, have I seen you at 8th street?" elsewhere. I brought in friends from Rhode Island a couple of weeks ago who told me that they were surprised to find this bar I dragged them to in New Jersey is easily the coolest, warmest, most kick-ass neighborhood bar they've ever been to. For the first time in my life finally understand that the Cheers theme song isn't just sitcom shmaltz: it really is nice to go somewhere where everyone knows your name. Only complaints: Cash only (but that's changing at the end of this month so nevermind!), no Narragansett Lager (I will continue to lobby for this to be remedied) and the bathroom lines can get a bit long on weekend nights. All worth it though. But hey, if you've taken all this time to read this review and decide to step in and see a girl with red hair and winged eyeliner with an affinity for Taylor Swift and Paramore karaoke drinking a big soup container full of Kona at the bar, feel free to say hi and I'll share all my secrets. read more

First and foremost, the atmosphere is pretty great in this place. A lot of people, a lot of tvs for sports and enough room to feel like you have space. The food and drinks were great too. We had the Boneless wings (sweet chili) and bar pizza (pepperoni with hot honey). The negative comes from the service, one bartender specifically. He was awful getting to people all night and he charged me for other people's drinks (can be an honest mistake) and I asked him to remove it. Instead of working with me, I got an attitude and was told "anyone can say that." I'm a former bartender and I would NEVER blame a customer like that. He was so rude and acted like he didn't care. My husband and I have been coming here for 5+ years as it is so convenient from our apartment and we have watched the place evolve so much in the best way -- from the food to the growing beer selection, etc. Beyond the place itself, Anthony and the rest of the bartenders/staff really go out of their way to know you. It's hard to find the words to describe how much I love this place. I've lived in Hoboken for 8 years now and the changes Anthony and Mary have made over the years are amazing! When I first moved here I thought it was just a dive bar that's been around town for years but it's become so much more. The food is always so good and they occasionally add/change the menu which is fun! The buffalo chicken quesadilla is my favorite. The bar has a ton of craft beers which is originally why we kept coming back, but the drink menu has really grew! I love the spicy mango margarita if you're feeling fancy. I also love an aperol spritz (shout out to Rocco who made me realize I actually like them). Lastly I can't speak highly of the staff. We are there very often (probably too often) and I see them as my friends. They make an effort to serve you well but also get to know you a little bit. They really make the environment so special that even in a room of strangers I feel like I'm with all my friends. We came here because we walked bye the evening prior to our visit. What caught her attention was the big 32 ounce plastic cup of beer. We also had an appetizer called the big ass nachos. They are definitely living up to their name. I think this is a great location and definitely plenty of seating indoors and out. The only reason I get four stars is because They only except cash. That to me seems very questionable. Other than that the server was friendly and quick service. The bar on the inside looks a little rundown but your typical bar. Today was the first time we sought out a bar to watch the Patriots game since moving to the area. We strolled down to McSwiggan's but it was (predictably) packed -- and with COVID limiting headcount both in/outdoors, we faced a bit of a predicament... until 8th Street Tavern pulled in clutch. The vibe indoors beats out the plastic chair set up outside (only the two tables by the entrance were shaded by umbrellas) so vy for that if/when you can. Atmosphere/clientele is low-key, which means a thumbs up from me. Idk if it's because I'm so used to Manhattan prices, but I thought the beer prices were rather reasonable, esp considering the craft brews available ($6-7/per). Wings were decent, nachos are legit "big-ass" and properly named so on their menu. All in all, we were pleasantly surprised. @8th Street Tavern - any interest in becoming an "official" Patriots bar? I was here for Sunday afternoon football. A man decided he wanted to put his hands on me and push me. I walked away, but he continued to yell and put his finger in my face while and cursing. A bouncer noticed and asked what happened. I told him he put his hands on me and continued to yell at me, as he saw. Instead of the bouncer kicking either one of us out, he told us just to "stay away from each other". I'm the first to admit when I'm wrong, and while I shouldn't have yelled back at him or cursed, I would have accepted being kicked out for causing an issues. The fact that he did not get kicked out after putting hands on me is absolutely reprehensible. If you're coming here, please do not count on the bouncers having your back. They do not. read more
