We booked reservations online-noted there was a birthday in our group-and they had free prosecco at the table for us-which was much appreciated! We went on a Tuesday night for book club and it was the perfect spot. We were seated outside on a beautiful night and the service was great. I ordered a martini and they were out of the juice so the server offered to make me an espresso martini for the special price, it was so nice! Honestly I've tried time and time again to enjoy this place and it never impresses. It's fine - and fine is the best it gets. Services was pretty bad - asked to sit at a table with waiter service and had to go to the bar. Setting is fine - different than Hoboken generally but feels a bit like a half assed speak easy vs delivering on what it's trying to be. Stopped by for drinks on a Friday night around 9 pm. There was a crowd but it wasn't packed and there were a couple high tables and couch seating available. The guy at door said we could only sit for an hour. You're lucky I'm even sitting here at all having average $20 cocktails. Drinks were good, clever names and unique combination. Service was snooty. This is by far my favorite cocktail bar in Hoboken. We come here all the time and the drinks are consistently incredible no matter what season (since their menu changes seasonally). The service is also impeccable. Special shoutout to Taj and Macarena for being the greatest bartenders and servers. The overall ambiance and vibe of this cocktail bar hits the spot every time. We tried a cocktail making class recently here as well and it was sooo much fun! We learned how to make drinks, learned about the history and drank and ate some small bites all for only $75. I have been to Backstage a few times to enjoy their creative cocktails, indulge in the Tuesday all-night happy hour (negronis, Manhattans, and martinis), listen to some live music (Wednesdays), and most recently to take their interactive Winter Cocktail Class. The course was hosted by their Bar Manager, Gio, who was fun, engaging, and knowledgeable. I really felt like I learned a good deal around the history of certain cocktails, as well as helpful bartending tricks. Plus, I had a blast doing it! The bartender, who I had seen there on many other nights, was also a delight. The class started with the recipe for and a premade glass of a Winter Spiced Americano, which was similar to a negroni with a hint of seasonal spices. From there, we had the hands-on opportunity to make the remaining 3 drinks, which included a smoky Diablo, a Rum Old Fashioned (apparently rum was the original alcohol in this drink), and a sensational Mexican Hot Chocolate. I loved all of them! Not only were the drinks amazing, but we also got to sample some bites from the chef. We had a skewer of steak wrapped around chorizo, avocado toast on homemade multi-grain bread, a Korean fried chicken wing, and some decadent chocolate truffles. Plus, the class was only 6 people, so we were really able to mingle, ask questions, and fully immerse ourselves in the experience. We will definitely be back! read more

The vibe in here was trying to go for a speakeasy-backstage vibe but I thought the entire service and ambiance was off. First, there is no host greeting you at the front, you need to sort of flag down their attention to get seated. Then, there's no one attending to your menus or waters, you also needed to flag someone down to get that service. I would understand if this was a standing room type bar, but it's supposed to be a relaxed speakeasy type feel. The music the whole time was simply way too loud, you can barely hold a conversation without yelling the whole time. We ordered a dessert that was clearly premade, and the dishes that were set on our table were still wet with water from the dishwasher. The one saving grace is that the drink I got was pretty good, but at around $20 for a drink I expect better service and attentiveness. Disappointed to say the least as they are affiliated with Sirenetta and Sorellina which I've loved my experiences at. read more

There we were. A small group of locals just looking for a quick drink before heading home for the night. We enter the venue and approach the bar, about to ask for a few glasses of wine and then it happened. A man aggressively grabbed my arm and yelled, "No standing room at the bar!!" The lady with the dirty martini standing next to me looked at me incredulously and then looked at the man wondering what was going on. Was the fire inspector there? Were we being profiled? None of us could figure out what the problem was that would require such a reaction. We asked politely what we could do to remedy the situation, as the bartender asked what we would like to drink, and the man told the bartender to stop and not serve anyone associated with our party. At this point other patrons, standing near the bar, looked over and asked what the problem was. At this point we were escorted out and told that we should never come back. We complied and walked to the sidewalk in shock at what just occurred. We walked to the front and ran into another group that had been treated to the same "hospitality." Together we concluded that the mans actions must have been at the direction of ownership so we shouldn't blame the employee. After all he was just following directions. An unfortunate turn of events for the night but now we know better and can inform other locals of the business model. Caveat emptor. read more
