This was not a simple move, as I now had to stock up on a lot of things. One of them was my own A/C, which my new building lacked. I bought an A/C unit, but I had to get it installed as some of the parts needed modification. The supt to my building was not available until the following day, so I needed to find a quick solution. I went around to several stores, hoping to find an oscillation fan in the meantime. It was late night on a Friday, and these guys were thankfully open. I found the fan I was looking for, and proceeded to check out. It was only then that I realized that it was past the store's closing hours. The owners kept the place going while I found what I needed, as they saw that I was having a bad day. These guys didn't even know me, and they went out of their way for me. Thanks to them, I didn't have to suffer that first night at my new place without A/C. I never forget those who helped me, and I thank them thoroughly for getting me out of a bind that day.

I took a walk around the store with new eyes and realized they have all sorts of things that I hope I never need. This included supplies for my kitchen, bathroom, and bedding. They have a little bit of everything, and in some interesting styles. I personally like keeping my place minimalist and in conservative colors. And I was able to find items that fit my tastes too. The staff were alright. Checkout was quick, and I chatted with the staff while I waited for transportation. NYC had a heat wave that day, and I was not hauling things in that crazy weather. While browsing through the aisles for basic household items it was stifling hot without any air circulation of either fan or air conditioning. The sales associate / cashier does her job of ringing customers yet nothing more as she was unable to answer what the phone number to her employer's business is. When further inquiring if they carry any cleaners or insect controls, the woman cashier robotically stands there without responsiveness, without moving a finger to result in apathetic complete disgust with life. J&J 99 City Inc. sits on the corner of 95th Street and 101st Avenue, former home of a local savings bank with a high ceiling, dark and dingy floors and very minimal lighting and adjacent to Chase Bank. I went to CVS and all they had was a colossal box of gloves for a whopping 9 bucks. I didn't need that many gloves. And the petroleum jelly was oddly priced. The smallest container cost more than a larger one outside of the First Aid aisle. Nice way to gouge injured people, CVS. So, screw that. I decided to go up to Harlem to find a decent 99 cent store. And here it is. It's not huge, but it's well equipped. They even have a large selection of aluminum foil takeout containers and pans with covers. Nice for a church social. Instead of spending $14+ at CVS, I spent a total of $2.92 for exactly what I needed. 99 Cent Stores will always have a special place in my cheap, cheap heart.

They seem put out by questions, and the guy at the front door jumps at you like he assumes the customers are all thieves. And the prices are a bit higher than the others, so that's strike three. I come here if I can't find what I want at the other two. (One is just is little bit East on 125th, and the other is around the corner on Amsterdam, BTW.) We got home and she pointed out that the animal is coming apart at the seems and has a big hole. I went back to the store to exchange and was informed of the policy. I kinda get why mom & pop stores have these policies. However, if you want to keep customers and you sell a damaged product, exchange it and take the loss. You just made Amazon look like a much better option. UPDATE: Spoke with the store owner. There seems have been a misunderstanding as damaged products can be exchanged (they then return them to the manufacturer) . Should be remedied tomorrow. Will update to more stars once its all rectified.
