On my short trip to the city, someone in my party had forgotten to pack a necktie. While we were very short on time, I figured a quick run through some of the stores, might have us finding one. The first stop was Lot-Less. I wasn't sure if this was a thrift store at first, or a discount store. It is very similar to Job Lot. Everything's here. They have clothes, snacks, makeup, books, home supplies etc. but no neckties. This store is pretty messy, and very random with its inventory, but the prices are very low. I had to walk around for a while to find someone to ask about their merchandise. It is nice to have a store like this in an expensive and overpriced city, especially for the residents. read more

There was a time when I used to come here almost everyday. They used to have lots of great items with excellent prices. Over the years this place changed drastically! Could not find anything with good quality, items I used to love was clothing & cookware. But I was kinda disappointed when I didn't find anything much I like. THE WORST LOCATION. Stuck in the 1980s with THE most brain dead cashiers that simply cannot count. Although I came on the last day of their 15 day return deadline, the cashier refused to give me my money back and insisted I exchange. She swore it had been 15 days already when it was indeed wasn't. And this is after standing in their long line And after the security guard has to write a little note that you're returning and will ask you how much the item is vs even looking at your receipt. This an incredible store with great deals, a convenient location & and an efficient manager who is always around willing to assist you with any questions (My personal experience). However, "somebody" really needs to do something about the cashiers. They have a NASTY attitude!! They treat you very contemptuously and have NO CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS. Why are they working there as cashiers if they are going to make people's experience so unpleasant at this great store? We spend OUR money there very considerably, it's not coming out of their paychecks! In fact, they have a job because people spend their money there. In many occasions, they also charge you what they want for the merchandise previously marked down and give you a hard time until you literally bring the "reduce price sign" to their faces. Moreover, they frequently scan items twice and overcharge you, so DO NOT LEAVE THE STORE until you check your receipt to make sure they did their job as they're supposed to. Please be more selective hiring new team players with good customer service skills, someone who at least understands basic English to be able to assist you instead of talking to the rest of their coworkers in a "foreign language" and laughing at you (so disrespectful). You will improve customer relations and definitely MORE SALES! read more

They sell suh a wide variety of items it's fun just to browse. - Clothing - jewelry (costume) - housewares - coats - bathing suits - food/snacks - stationary (crayons, coloring books, thank you notes) - gift wrap - undergarments - etc etc and that is most fun. I feel like I never know what I'll find Be aware that some of the food is dangerously close to expiration so I would steer clear of that. But the other bargains are usually well worth it. When I'm in the neighborhood this is a great place to find lipstick and nail polish for less. I've purchased bed pillows, hand towels, socks, and more. I wish I had a store like this closer to home. I don't get to this neighborhood as much as I used to when this store first opened. The store is busy. Sometimes you may find some clutter. I've never been unhappy with the conditions in the store or had an unpleasant customer service experience. I recommend for brand names for less. I find it's great for items that I hate to spend money on like towels and wash cloths! read more

i like visiting lot less cause i always leave with more then a few things and remember that its better to grab it now cause here today and gone tommorow for good. this manhattan location has about the same variety of stuff as the astoria spot and i notice less folks here which means i can roam around each aisle and second and grab whats cheap and usefull. from slippers to snacks , to homegoods, to cleaning supplies , to personal items and whatever else is on the shelves today. i got a foot massager for 15 bucks which i cant figure how to use but i do know how to use the amitron watch that glows in the dark with no problem. i spent about 60 bucks and most likely will use everything i purhased including the clock radio cube that cost 18 bucks . here today and not here tommorow or the day after but i am at lot less today and thats what really matters. . read more

It's call Lot-Less because they have a Lot Less than they should. I'm not sure how they determine they'll sell certain goods like napkins but then limit the quantity they have. The lines are always long in this store and for some reason the customers are super rude- always standing around and blocking aisles as if they've never been to a retail store in their lives. Their electronics are really cheaply made and not of quality. The best items to get here are close out beauty supplies like soaps/shampoos assuming regular stores don't carry those items any more. Their food selection is ok but the cookies they sell from other nationalities is very dry and cheap. These stores should be a "Lot" bigger and have a larger selection of inventory. read more

Don't get me wrong, you can find great deals in this Lot Less. That's the good part. The bad part is, the store is always messy. This is expected in a discount place like this. However, The staff is pretty slow, disinterested, and really don't seem to care about anything. Perfect example - 2 registers this morning with over 20 people in line. I waited (at around the 12 person mark) for over 8 minutes and no one had moved from the registers. One of the cashiers felt necessary to comment on every dress her customer was buying as she held it up to fold it. The other had a woman with only a few items and was so slow that in 8 minutes she had not finished the transaction. Maybe you think this was a fluke, but it is not. It happens almost every time you get in line - and the line can stretch across the store. I guess the manager feels you shouldn't get customer service because you are getting cheap prices. That's the only reason I can think of for keeping bad employees and not scheduling enough workers. read more

So, I know...four stars, for a DISCOUNT store? I mean...what the what?! I KNOW! See, Lot-Less is a chain of stores (there's another one downtown in the City Hall area) and when I visited my first one last year, I was impressed with their prices and some of their clearance items, but the store literally looked like it was in a building due to be condemned in a few years. The shelves and some of the small islands of stuff were probably in use during the Reagan administration so I wasn't impressed with the locale (but again, their stock and prices were great!). Fast forward to now and Lot-Less has opened up a new shop on 40 street right near Port Authority Bus Terminal. This location is larger than the other one I've visited and since it's newly renovated the space is nicely laid out, organized, clean and really well staffed. I've been going for over a month now and I have to tell you, I'm honestly shocked at how nice this place is kept. Normally discount stores like this look like they were raided by pirates and zombies working together, but this shop rarely has much out of place, and even if it's out of place in the evening, by the next day it's all fixed up. Items are easy to find and there's always a staff member floating around somewhere to ask questions. I mainly go to this store as a toy collector, looking for discounted toys that may have previously been hard to find or too expensive and I've often found such deals here. One toy that was once about $60 was now marked down to $30. A smaller one that used to be about $10.99 at Toys R Us was now $7.99. These are great prices! It's not just toys however. There's a nice dish drying cloth I picked up for $2.99, Crayola style art supplies for about $10 and even reasonable prices on items like Melba Toast and Irish Oatmeal. It's really quite impressive because stores that usually have such prices are selling "off brands" or near expired, grungy items but everything here looks crisp, new and not something that got kicked out of the back of a UPS truck. I really enjoy shopping here and it's been a big help with Christmas shopping too! I really recommend a visit if you're looking for a sort of "mini" department store to check out. read more

If you like bargains this is the place to check out! It's right near the Port Authority bus station so it's right at a good location for travelers. They have a big variety of close outs and bargains you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. They can sell things such as designer sunglasses that would cost you around $20 or more for just $1! They have all types of assorted personal and household items, as well as clothing at amazingly low prices. They also have all sorts of food items. Not everything is a big bargain but mostly it's all priced pretty well. If you know your prices you won't overpay, but keep in mind it's not ALL cheaper than you could find elsewhere. They have a lot of food items, although some of them are close to expiration, but often it doesn't matter at all since the expiration dates don't mean much and you can freeze things as well. They have a lot of cheeses at super bargain prices, and also chocolates that would cost you 3 times as much elsewhere. Chocolates don't really go bad quickly either. Overall it's a great place to check out if you are in the area and looking for some bargains and close outs! read more

They have great stuff here for reasonable prices. It can get pretty busy. There are some REALLY good deals. Its best to come when you know theyre restocking. The lines can get pretty long but it moves fast. I've gotten things from gum, mirrors, tuperware, underware, to nailpolish. Because of the good deals, the place can get pretty messy and you'll even find damaged things. But it is OK, you still find what you need anyhow. I love this place! read more

This store is the ultimate bargain shopper's paradise in NYC - I stop by this location at least once a week just to see the latest bargains they have in stock. From bedding to kitchenware, to electronics, to dry food goods, to toys, and high-end clothing, I often find that a portion of my paycheck goes to Lot-Less every few weeks! Some amazing recent finds - New Balance sneakers and Anne Klein ballet flats for $30/pair, Gloria Vanderbilt tops for $13/each, sturdy black suede boots for $8/pair, Jordache jeans for $8/pair...packs 80 pieces of Trident gum for $2/each...Halls cough drops for $1/each...and the list goes on... I also enjoy the fact that this location is bright (not like Jack's, which is dark and has a warehouse feel), clean, and the long lines tend to move fast (within less than 10 minutes or so). This is an excellent place to look for gifts (since they also have an extensive section of gift-wrapping paper for 99 cents), or for things around the home. For these prices (20-30$ for Wegner / Swiss, CK, etc) they are obviously knock offs, but who cares? Quality is great, zippers work flawlessly and it feels real and like it wont fall apart. It's in the perfect location if you commute from midtown it's right next to the train station! As for the goods! My heart grew three sizes when I stepped through the doors of Lot-Less Closeouts. Located right off of Times Square, this is one of New York's best kept secrets. The prices here are just unbelievable - and it's not crap, it's high quality, name brand merchandise. I bought an umbrella that I would normally pay $10-15 anywhere else in town for only $4.99! But wait, it doesn't stop there. I picked up a box of Kashi Crunchy Granola bars for $2.99! I also picked up a copy of Tucker Max's book, "Sloppy Seconds," for those long subway rides home for...$2.99 Seriously, you won't find prices like these in Manhattan. My co workers and I frequent this store sometimes more than once a week. They sell close outs so they are brand named goods at great prices and they are always putting new merchandise on the shelves. You can find everything here from clothing, to cosmetics, toiletries, toys, pillows, etcs. They accept cash and all credit cards but best of all you can return. read more

It's also in a very convenient location on 40th Street right near 8th Avenue aside from having things like makeup, cookware, clothing, food, and so forth. I come here often during my lunch break. It's a good place to find deals. There is hardly any staff on the floor but the store is usually well organized. During lunch times, the check out line is long but it goes by relatively quick. The prices are really good but take caution when purchasing food items and verify the expiry date. read more
