I don't know if they've set a date yet, but apparently all of the 99 Cents Only Stores will be closing. They're currently offering between 5 and 30% off of everything in the store, and are preparing to sell the store fixtures, shelves, etc... This is probably the first stage of liquidation, as there's still a pretty good selection of everything, including produce and perishables (as of last night, anyway). Customer service is no more lacking than usual. Definitely still some great deals to be had. read more

I say Code Enforcement should shut it down AND ensure ALL the employees who have suffered for months--especially now in the Palm Desert summer heat--should continue to receive FULL PAY and RESTITUTION for having to have worked in a store with no AC for months. Haven't been to this location in a long time and boy is it run down now! All the employees that I interacted with were super friendly which is great but the store was filthy!!!! I don't think I've ever seen a bathroom as dirty. I didn't think about taking photographs but there was literally blood dripped all over the floor in the women's restroom. People trying on clothes in the bathroom when I went in. I'll stick to the La Quinta location. read more

This particular 99 cent store is larger than the store in Cathedral City. They have a "gourmet", section that was well stocked shelves of spices, international foods and gluten free pasta. All for 99 cents. Who knew? I picked up a couple of mats to use under my dogs dishes. One has a cute paw print cut out on it. 99 cents each, who knew? They carry Alps and Gravy Train dog food. Cat supplies, as well as cat and dog toys. 99 cents each, who knew? Well the dog food was under 99 cents. I think someone priced it incorrectly. Maybe they didn't know? I love their veggie and bread section. Cucumbers, radish, lettuce, both romaine and iceberg. Carrots, artichokes, lemons, and peppers. All 99 cents, who knew? My favorite section are the seasonal aisles. I bought several red Santa fedora hats and cowboy hats, along with a load of shiny baubles, glued them to the hats....boom... Instant Christmas cheer. You have no idea how much I missed these stores after I moved from SoCal. Now that I'm back, I've had a happy reunion with 99 Cents Only stores. Not all dollar stores are created equal. This chain has some savvy buyers, snatching up overstock on some quality items. On a recent trip, we found replacement mop heads for the Method Power Mop ($5 each at Lowe's). Video cables? Check. this store is not even 99c it's actually sometimes $2.29c plus it's not just cents it's also dollars. I am never going to this store EVER and I mean EVER again. I'm very disappointed with having to drive all the way to a 99c store and not even everything being 99. Monday morning around 8:10am, I walked in the 99Cents store on highway 111. The cashier (Mariah) was walking around by the register on her cellphone. When I greeted her and mentioned that I wanted to exchange a few items, her response was that she wouldn't be able to make the return. I proceeded to mentioned that I had the receipt and that I only wanted to exchange. She barely looked at the receipt and said that she would have to have manager approval. Told me to take my return/exchange with me until the manager could consider my request. I went to retrieve the items I was planning to buy. The manager approached me and said that the return policy is only 9 days and that's on the receipt. I told her that I have the receipts for the 3 items I wanted to exchange and that each item has is on receipt. She barely looked at the receipt as if I was asking her for a favor. She approved one return since it was within the 9 days. Now the receipt that was passed due by one day the manager with an attitude said she could not make the exception because she didn't want to get fired. The manager clearly is new in retail, because making an exception is what we call providing customer service. The worst part was that she didn't even wanted to speak to me, she walked away as she said " I don't want to get fired" told the cashier that she would only approve the one item within the 9 days. I have been shopping at that location for a very long time and it was the first time I had encountered a rude, less interested manager looking to have no interaction with a paying customer! Really! I was not asking for my $1.99 back, I only wanted to exchange it. I mentioned to her that the was the first time I had encountered such a negative manager and that I had never had a negative interaction with anyone else in that store. She made sure to let me know that she was the store manager and that no one should be making exceptions. I drove to the 99cents store on Monterey and Amanda the store manager was kind and respectful to look at the receipt and the item. I explained that the item was in perfect condition and that I had been made aware by a rude cashier and rude store manager (young Hispanic, maybe in her mid 20s or early 30s) that I was passed the 9 days of the return policy. Amanda made the exception and took the time to apologize. I even ended up buying a lot more items that the $1.99 I was looking to exchange. I won't be back to the 99 Cents store on highway 111. That store manager acted as if I had ask to return $1,000.00 in product. Complete saddened by the incident, because that store has some amazing ladies and gentlemen working at that location. Maybe the business motto is that a customer that spends $0.99 cents is less valuable than a customer that shops at Nordstrom. read more

I just witnessed a man mistreat a few cashiers here as if they were beneath him. He was extremely vulgar and racist! I only stood near because I felt obligated, as a decent human being, to support them - even if in silence. I did not say anything - just stood near, prepared. It saddened me the people who looked the other way, how no one was helping. I am very impressed with how the employees dealt with this issue, and all I could do was ask if they were okay and tell them they were amazing in how they handled the issue ever so gracefully. You know what the cashier said? She said, he was probably just having a bad day. If you had heard what he was saying, any average person would have either thrown fists around or run off in tears. Whoever is the Manager here, give this woman a raise because a person of that character and strength is hard to find. For all of you shoppers out there, please do something. Even if it's to just stand by. Sometimes it IS best not to say anything, but please do something. Turning a blind eye is just the same as approving of this mistreatment. read more

There is a new manager. Her name is Allison. Her employee's name is Al. I will be writing a letter to the general manager, Marcos Corona. Don't waste your time going here. Give your hard earned cash to another 99 cents store (they are everywhere and trust me this one is not that special). Why this 'high-school' attitude old lady got the manager job beats the hell out of me. I wanted a plastic cup 12" from my reach. She had 3 cones blocking the area they were working in so they could 're-stock' without letting customers shop. I reached over to grab a cup and she said something rude, and then said I almost fell. I said lady my flip flop hit the cone, I didn't almost fall. Probably didn't graduate high school. And then she and her employee AL started laughing and saying smack about me. I mentioned I would contact her manager.I doubt she figured I would get the names and come back to her to get her last name (clearly the girls at the front didn't like her either as they gave me her name). When I came back she was laughing about it to her employee AL and acting like she was 12. I was standing right there. She's refused to give me her last name. She asked me what mine was and I told her. What's the big deal lady, if you are right in your treatment of a customer, why act like you never graduated High School. Anyway, I told her I would write a letter. She ran after me screaming at me telling me I am banned from the store. Really? And she is a manager? Smooth move Carlos. Nice hiring. She really is not management material and what manager coaxes her employee to laugh and make jokes about a customer. About a minute after their whole display tipped over. LOL---karma---idiot. Trust me, I don't need to go to that store. Like I said--there are much better ones with nicer people and managers who actually know how to manage. Eek! Methinks not--People, you work for your money. They have a variety of fresh veggies and fruits and brand name groceries. When I'm looking for something specific and I call to see if they have what I need before wasting gas to drive there, the employees are very nice and helpful over the phone and take the time to check if they have available what I need. read more

We spent two weeks in California at a time share with a kitchen and found the 99 cent Only Stores great for small amounts of food and produce. We really enjoyed their four salad pack and the huge stalk of Brussel Sprouts that tasted like they were just picked. This location needs improvement. EVERY SUMMER the AC stops working which is horrible for the customers and employees, not to mention the melted chocolates on isle 3. This company is multimillionaire and can afford to have this problem solved. I've gotten mosquito bites while shopping there because of the heat. The check-out lines are always LONG and I do not blame the employees because they have apologized and said they are short-staffed. 99 cents is one of my favorite stores to explore when I come to California. We went in last night to grab some snacks to keep in the kitchen at the resort. We found everything we were craving and more. The only thing I took a star off for was the face that a pregnant cashier was just standing there and acted like she didn't want to take customers, so she had the sign out saying "next register please." There was a long line. Finally, she took us and a lady behind us. You can't have one register open and have 10 people waiting in line to get out of there. read more
