For all of the 99 cent stores in the Sunnyside area, this one stands out as one of the largest on Queens Blvd. It almost looks as if it could be a supermarket, but instead filled with cheap dollar store items. There is no shortage of anything here, from seasonal to random, they've got it all. Customer service here is solid and is usually willing to help folks locate items not easily found in their overly stuffed aisles of junk. I've seen customers attempt to haggle with the staff, which usually doesn't seem to work. The quality of items here are on par with garage sale items, which mainly means wholesale junk in retail terms. But watch out, not everything here is a dollar. There used to be a sign outside that said "Everything 99 cents or less" with cheesy stickers that noted some other items were 79, 59, and even 39 cents. Now the sign says "99 cents or more" which may completely defeat the purpose of having such a store in the first place. read more

Your standard 99 cent Store. Avon deodorant, foreign toothpaste that isn't USDA approved, and Chinese batteries that last a week max. The aggressive bag check is annoying though. No, I'm not trusting you with my laptop so I can buy a lingerie bag so my bras don't get destroyed in the washer. Sorry. ABSOLUTE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE IVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY LIFE! one of the women who works behind the counter tries to blow helium into these two massive balloons i brought to the store. after paying $12 for helium, she filled up my first balloon from the middle (it's a long number balloon) and caused so much tension on the seams that it ripped!!! so she causes one of my two balloons to explode, blames it on the poor quality of my balloon, and told me to buy her balloon (which happens to be an ugly shade of orange, that doesn't match my gold balloons). she was beyond rude, taunting me to call the police when i demanded an apology and compensation. to make matters worse, she arrogantly refused to give me a refund, arguing that she lost her helium even though it was completely her fault!!! i've worked in retail and hospitality for years; never have i ever treated any customer with such disrespect. it's disgusting and inexcusable. i will never be back. please don't support a business that treats customers like trash. read more

I moved out to Sunnyside a few months ago, and since this store is on the way from the train to my house, it seemed like a convenient spot to pick up miscellaneous household items. First of all, the items aren't all that cheap for a discount store. We may be in New York, but we're also in Queens, and I've gotten better deals on items in Manhattan, or in surrounding supermarkets. Since many things aren't labeled with a price (and few thing are 99 cents), it's your guess how much you're going to need at the register. I could put all the above aside, however, if I weren't treated like a criminal every time I stepped into the store. Maybe the margin of profit isn't huge for a discount store, but I have never had staff follow me around, blatantly stare me down as I shop, or treat me with such contempt and suspicion at the register when I am trying to give them my money. I tried to ignore it at first, since they're just doing their jobs, but every person I've walked into that store with has left fuming, and now they are making you check bags at the door. Sorry, but I don't feel like giving you my $125 bag just so I can pick up a $1 pencil sharpener. Oh, what's this, you're holding on to my bag with all my personal belongings in it and you're STILL staring me down?? Last time I went in there, I tried to pay for my items with a credit card and the woman at the register stared at my credit card for a good minute and a half before demanding ID in the most skeptical manner possible. I've worked in retail before and had people freak out about things like not smiling. I can't even imagine how those people would react to the bitterness the cashiers exude. Sorry, but I'm sick of it. I get uncomfortable even walking by this store, as there is always someone at the door staring as you walk by, as if he doesn't want you to come inside. Yeah, like nothing there is really 99 cents. This is just a store full of random CRAP! But when you are not in a hurry, it's cool to browse. Some useful cool things I've found there: -an awesome backpack shaped like a HOUSE (for only $1) -candles -cheap Christmas decorations (oh man I LOVE tacky XMas) -window screens... you know the kind you put underneath the window... I don't think I'm describing that well, but if you need a window screen, they have those It's worth a look... but not for everyday things! Highly suggest you walk down a couple of blocks on queens blvd to 39th (on the same side of block as this god-awful place) and go to deals. This place is awful. First, the place is so disorganized it is hard to find things. Second you should be aware of no returns on anything policy just exchanges (also random no exchange or returns on a lot of random items put up on hand written signs around the register so look out for those). I was well aware of this policy when purchasing my items so this wasnt the problem. I went to exchange some products I bought with some kids toys and it turned I had extra credit so cashier asked me to go find something else. No problem. Left everything at the register and went to find something else and when I returned she "swore to god" that she had given me the toys I brought to the register earlier- I knew for a fact I left them there. Since neither of us had proof I dropped it but after some thought (and she left the register area) I returned and asked the new cashier to look around the register area. There it was tucked away in a black bag. I said ok everyone makes mistakes but I would like an apology so they call back the cashier who made the mistake and she accuses me of sneaking into the register area and hiding the toys there. Omg. I had my baby with me so I couldn't make too big of a fuss but of course I will not be returning. It isn't just the horrible customer service. It's hot as hell in here in the summertime and quality of goods is horrendous. I'm not looking for top notch things at a dollar store. But if you want a dollar store that has much better customer service and is way more professional and organized with better bang for the buck seriously head down a few blocks to deals. One of the largest 99 cents stores I've been to - not that I'm a 99 cents store aficionado but I've been to my fair share when I needed something and something cheap. As others have said, not everything is 99 cents. In fact, the majority of the store isn't 99 cents. You can find some quick items that you might need in a bind but it won't be the best quality. They have a wide variety of items, even holiday items and such. They aren't the friendliest but they've helped me find things that I've been looking for - would come back if I'm looking for something quick and close by. read more

Why so many bad reviews? I really love this place and I'm subtracting one star only because they don't like my dog coming into the store with me, but some places are like that. Allergies and etc. I always find great things here from cheap shower curtains that are actually really cute to hand soap by Dalan (a Turkish brand that smells great), silk Indian bedding for $16 in king size [2 sheets and 2 sham covers], house slippers, a yoga mat, spices, unscented candles, hardware stuff, and all sorts of other useful & reasonably priced items! Reviewers are correct there is one lady with an attitude at the front but other than her there's a very sweet elderly lady who wears a head scarf and a few very attentive male employees...albeit they don't speak great English, they have gone out of their way to try to find me what I need. read more

99 cents is definitely a misnomer, the prices range from 25 cents to a few bucks. It's a big mess, so yeah, you usually have to either wander around aimlessly til you find what you want (or it finds you), or ask someone. Luckily the staff seems to have figured out where everything is, even if it makes no sense (I guess they think everyone keeps dressing and hardware together). As those before have mentioned, this place is filled to the brim with random items. Amid all the chaos are some deals to be had. Today I found 50' of 18 gauge speaker wire for 2.99, similar wire costs about 20 bucks at radio shack, and 40 bucks at best buy. They also have extension cords, power strips, and random audio and visual cables in their "electronics" department. The kitchen and bathroom sections are good if you are moving to the neighbor hood. They have cheap waste baskets, garbage bags, ice trays, sponges, air freshener, hand soap, etc... Not a bad general store; improperly named, but not bad. read more

This is an ABOMINABLE dollar/variety store. Where do I begin? Yes the store is very large, and the sheer amount and variety of items for sale is almost mind boggling. However, the entire store is a complete and utter mess, with almost no organization or rationale to the layout. Shit is all over the floors in every aisle, and the walls are plastered from floor to ceiling in the lowest-quality merchandise you've ever seen. It's like a large-scale version of the basement of the world's most insane hoarder shut-in. It's like this store was in the process of being looted, but then everyone collectively realized how shitty the quality of everything was, and just dropped it all and walked out. To make matters worse, no one in this entire god forsaken store seems to speak English. Now, I'm not one of these nationalistic, speak-the-language-or-don't-come-here people, and I really do cherish the diversity of my neighborhood. But if you have a store where it is virtually impossible to find what you're looking for (unless you have hours to kill scanning aisle after messy aisle and unreachable products on the walls), you'd better have some people there with a rudimentary understanding of the English language so as to provide even the most basic customer service. I went in here for some wooden clothes pins, and after trying to explain to 2 separate employees through slowly-spoken words and hand gesturing, I finally had to bring up an image of a clothes pin on my phone before she knew what I was talking about. I came in here another time looking for metal washers and walked out empty handed because no one could help me. You'd better make sure you have Google image search fired up before trying to find anything specific in this crazy maze. The cherry on this "treat" was the absolute disdain of the miserable woman who rang me up at the counter. This place is not a treat, this place goes onto the growing list of dollar stores I've encountered in Sunnyside and Astoria that hire retail employees with the foulest attitudes. I go up to the register and say 'hello, how are you' and I get nothing. Then I'm not even privileged to get a verbal amount from the all of a sudden mute. I'm given back my money and I say 'thank you' and I get nothing again. Two women in line before me had all kinds of generic small talk with the women behind the cash register and received greetings and goodbyes. Sorry that I don't have a vagina and you didn't even have the decency to exemplify any kind of customer service that a 16 year old would employ during their first day on the job.
