I used to come to this 99 Ranch Market pretty regularly for months and never thought I'd end up writing a review like this. I genuinely liked shopping here, which is what makes this situation so disappointing. During a recent visit, I had an extremely disturbing interaction with security where I was pepper sprayed multiple times, cornered in a bathroom stall, accused of stealing (when I didn't), and even had a KNIFE pointed at me when I was just trying to leave which has ultimately completely changed how I view this place. What should have been a normal shopping trip escalated into something that left me feeling unsafe and honestly shocked by how things were handled. I never expected to walk into a grocery store and leave feeling the way I did. I'm not writing this because of one bad day -- I'm writing it because trust matters. When you've been a regular somewhere and something serious happens, the response and accountability matter just as much as the incident itself. Unfortunately, this experience changed my perception of the store entirely. Not much stands out here and nothing bad about it lately. 99 Ranch Market on Newark Blvd. in Newark, CA is your average Asian grocery store. You can find better locations throughout the state, but it's still very convenient in this neighborhood and it's been around for decades. The store isn't always the best stop, but they have the deli options and bakery inside. I'm surprised that they only had one cashier inside on a weekday morning before 12noon. Cashier doesn't smile or talk much either. Ambiance is ok, but not as exciting as other locations. Aisles are spacious though. It felt more organized and very clean inside today. I came specifically for healthy 1 Liter coconut beverages and the place had a good variety to choose from. I purchased the $4.49 each Chunguang Coconut Water which isn't always available or easy to find. Each carton contains 3 servings at 60 calories each. Best part is that it includes nutrients. 6% calcium, 10% iron, and 15% potassium in each serving. Nice! Tasted pretty decent and hydrating for the price. Again, this isn't my favorite 99 Ranch location, and most locations are listing items at highest prices, but it's still worth the convenient stop as needed. read more

For the average person, it's easy to overlook this market.. but it's a hidden gem in plain sight. We get fish here almost every week and try all the types of fresh fish options just for fun. We haven't been let down yet. They will clean, behead and tail the fish all the way down to cutting steaks out of the fish here for free. They actually will even deep dry the whole fish! The prices are really good and they have some cool candies, treats and produce options here. The service can either be really good or really bad, there is no in between. No matter the service, I'll be shopping here lol. They also have a decent little restaurant take out section where we got a few items that weren't bad at all. She has a hat and short hair. I think she discrimates against non Chinese speakers. She basically had a long conversation with the granny in front. Bought a lot of veggies. Been going for 15+ years. And this year it's 4 times a Week. That stops today. I hate how the guys in the fish dept act like they can't hear you or are doing you a favor getting fish. I was waiting for like 15-20 minutes and was only 2nd in line, 2 other people gave up waiting. I kept having to circle back as the guy in front of me was making the fish monger clean and cut a fish. In Newark, for a party next door, we got here early, so I decided to check out Ranch 99. Quality/Quantity - Shin Noodle Soup was on sale - Korean Ramen, a 10 pack for $9.99. So I impulsively bought a case. I have been craving this for a while. I almost bought this when I was at the Business Costco in Las Vegas 5/10/23; but I did not want to carry it back. Costco has the best prices, especially when on sale, but they rarely have this special item in stock. Atmosphere - Huge location, if only I had more time to shop or Yelp. This place had so many departments, if only I had more time to take pictures or notes. Open 7 days a week from 8am to 10pm. Service - Ok Price - $9.99 on sale. Started by a Taiwanese immigrant in 1984, it is now the largest Asian supermarket franchise in the US with 53 stores. I believe the "99" is supposed to connote low-prices like the 99-cent variety stores. They are still solid with it comes to Asian groceries with better quality produce, meat, fish, and canned goods. The thing you can trust more is they'll be a little better about sweeping their inventory for expired goods unlike other places. It's a mini-zoo trip for your kids as well as they are almost guaranteed to love the live fish and crab tanks. I'm always finding interesting packaged noodles and snacks I've never seen before. They give you "cash-back" monopoly money you can only spend at the store that is proportionate on your purchase price. Most people use it in the hot food section on the left. We used our $18 bucks back that day to get a half-roast duck and it was much better than some other local roast duck places. Bad thing is there is almost always a long line at the hot food section and it always seems like it's understaffed with just one person trying to deal with a huge line. The huge line causes irritated and rude customers and makes the lone staff become rude and apathetic. This 99 Ranch Market is clean and pretty organized. It starts showing its ages. But not as old as those in the Los Angeles area's stores. This is what I found out on 99 Ranch. The older one looks very outdated and old. The new one looks lovely, filled with all the modern technology and decoration. They have hardly updated or remodeled the old stores. The price in this Newark store is on the higher side. I don't find many bargains or more profound discount items in this store. The parking lot is safe and pretty big. I have no problem getting a parking space very close to the entrance. read more

One dude with a thief face in the seafood corner is cheating when selling shrimps. He uses one plastic bag and puts shrimps in it and weights the whole bag with a digital scale in front of customer and that's OK. The cheating part is before he puts the whole bag into a second plastic bag, the second plastic bag is suppose to prevent leaking. He moves the whole bag behind the scale and pretends that he is putting the whole bag into a second plastic bag, but in reality he is preventing customer from seeing what he is actually doing. He picks some big shrimps out from your bag and then puts some small rotten shrimps into your bag. So when you go back home, your bag is full of small tiny rotten shrimps mixed with the actual good shrimps that you choose. read more

Lol, no 99 Ranch at any location exceeds a 3 star rating. I get it, grocery shopping is a chore/errand, it doesn't have entertainment value (except for a few, I know who you are). So my ratings are primarily based on: can I get what I went in for; and can I do it with ease/comfort? That is where I give this location an extra star and better props than a 99 Ranch even closer to where I live. So I only come here in the late afternoons, like 2-4pm. I also never come on weekends, cuz I ain't no fool. If you know how these Asian grocery stores flow, you'll know whatta I mean. *wink wink nudge nudge* So in those hours of choice, this place is nice and comfy. No long lines (usually), no one blocking the aisles, no fender benders in the parking lot. This location is much bigger thus more room than the one closer to my place. So I take that extra drive. Everything is cleaner and more organized. I even see more new things here. I usually come for shellfish like shrimp, live crabs/lobster. Sometimes the occasional pork. I never get beef here cuz it is super limited also very pricey for the quality. Produce is another draw as I love produce that are staples in Asian cuisines. And since they are staples, you often can't beat the price, because this place will buy more of it, than say an American grocery store. And of course the kitchen staples for Asian cooking which always end up in my bag such as tea, red chili sambals, fish sauce to any noodle from any geographic area. Quite the hook up. So extra star for being better than the other 99 Ranch closer to me. Which really isn't a hard feat, but I'll commend it nonetheless. read more

I always love the variety of Asian grocery from 99 Ranch Market. This review is for the service of this particular location. When you shop here, please double check your receipts as the prices at the cashier counter might be different from the ones on the shelves. The customer ahead of me noticed two out of her five items are charged at higher prices by the cashier than the price tags on the shelves. She disputed with the cashier and it took the cashier time to check the price on the shelf as well as to make the correction, making the wait time for checkout miserable. I didn't learn the real-time lesson from this customer and checked out without going through the unit prices on my receipt. Though I only bought two items, I got one item charged 50% more than the shelf price. I am wondering if this store has a systemwide inaccurate pricing system. On the shelf, a competitive price is labeled to attract people to buy, but a higher price is charged during checkout. If customers catch it, an adjustment is made painfully. All the deli will go bad and smell very sour and rotten in a few hours after you buy them. It's impossible they're fresh from the kitchen. They must be leftovers for several days and reheated for a lot of times. They use heavy spices to cover the bad smell and still sell them to customers. SHAMELESS!!! As lockdown begins to lift during phase 2 of COVID-19, guidelines for social distancing for 6ft apart are still mandate. Cling wrap has been installed around all all cashier stations. Good to see that they are trying but not sure if it is actually helping? There could also be a shortage of plexiglass in the market, so I can't really ding them for this. Store is organized but I have not been able to find a couple of items on my list, such as Korean ramen the times I have visited. Selection of brands at the moment is not the most diverse, but it could be that they are only focusing on the essentials. Hopefully they start to restock noodle section soon! If you spend $20 or more, you get $1 coupon for the deli or bakery. M-F with purchase of $60 or more; Sat-Su with purchase of $80 or more, you'll receive $2 coupon for every $20 spent. Our biggest rule for 99 Ranch is that you never buy fruit smaller than an apricot here. The cherries are never fresh and look like they've been picked off the ground a few days after all the U-pickers have left for the season. And if you try to return them because you found a couple with mold, they'll only be willing to return you the amount of the weight of the remaining cherries (even if you decided to throw some of the bad cherries in the trash when you first started sorting through them). Our second biggest rule is that you never buy butchered meat here. Because it's probably already gone bad by the time they put it on display. And when you try to return the meat the next day, they'll have to cut open the bag to inspect and smell the meat, so be sure to stand away from them when they do that. read more

I've been a loyal customer of the local 99 Ranch store at Newark City, CA for years. I encountered very unpleasant experience with the Cart Clerk at Newark 99 Ranch (to be specific, the latino bald middle-age gentleman who collects carts in the parking lot). Not only once, but twice he made rude gestures to me because I didn't put the cart in the designated area. Yes, I should put the carts in the designated area. But aren't the Cart Clerks hired and get paid to collect carts in the parking lots? It is their job isn't it? There are always people not putting carts in the designated area. Store owners hire Cart Clerk to make the customers' life easy and to make their shopping experience happy. After all, they should at least not show any disrespect to customers, right? It was the first time in my life ever, to meet any Cart Clerk show their unpleasantness and disrespect to customers. The latino gentleman showed me gestures, rudeness, and threats. Again, not only once, but twice, on different days I visited the store. I am very sure other customers also encountered the similar experience with the gentleman. Hope you guys can at least tell him not to show gestures to customers. That way maybe you can keep your customers by not scaring them away. read more

This is one of the cleanest Ranch 99's out there. It used to be an independent Chinese supermarket called Lido, but after that one closed down, the big boys from the famous chain were quick to scoop it up. To me, all supermarkets are pretty much the same, but what I also like about this location is that it is far less crowded than the original Fremont branch on Paseo Padre. Best of all is the deli, which unlike other Ranch 99 stores, is not connected with the supermarket itself. It is actually operated by the same people who run the popular Royal Garden dim sum restaurant (http://www.yelp.com/biz/tgY84kLLeIBQKV6Iait79g) next door. After lunch time is over, all the remaining unordered items, such as your typical siu mai, ha gao, cha siu bao, daan taat, etc. are carted on over, giving patrons a wide array of options to choose from in addition to the normal deli type cuisine. The usual long lines at lunch time for Royal Garden should be an indication that the dim sum is of very high quality. Also, both the saltwater and soy sauce chicken here are some of the best around. I really don't know why people don't flock to this Ranch 99 instead of the other one down the street, but I suppose it's best that it remains my secret little watering hole for now. read more

This supermarket has been here for a really long time-- before LOV Newark became Dollar Tree and Kid's Castle became the fitness gym. We're talking 25+ years back. As a kid, I used to eat little sugar cubes from a previously opened pack that I can only assume other kids had gotten into. I confirmed this theory with other (former) kids who did the same thing. Guess that was the open secret of the supermarket! On weekends they have sample ladies who pass out samples of instant noodles, tea, and if you're lucky, Pocky! The cooling elements in here are cranked up, so it's a perfect spot to be on a hot day. During the winter months, definitely bring a jacket if you're planning on being in here for a while. For those of you who are looking for a little bit more of an Asian cuisine or even if you are a Pacific islander looking for some of the rare ingredients that can only be found here, then this is the place to be. On top of that, their prices are second to none. Be sure that if you were going to get fish from this place, that you read the instructions carefully where the butchers are working. Many people who frequent this place may get a little annoyed that newcomers are taking longer than they should by asking so many questions rather than simply reading the very simple instructions that are placed in view. Also, it is quite congested but you get used to it. No matter what, I love shopping here. You should be aware that parking is a bit tricky and not everyone parks according to the guidelines set by our DMV. I'm a recent convert to the ways of 99 Ranch Market. I wish I had known about this place years ago! A couple of ground rules for 99 Ranch. #1 - If you come in the afternoon on a weekend, be prepared for a horribly annoying parking situation. #2 - Get used to the idea that personal space seems to mean very little to those that shop here. Be prepared to throw elbows on the way in and out! Produce here is fresh, of excellent quality and about half the price you'd find at Safeway. I went to both stores this past Sunday and found amazing Fuji apples at 99 Ranch for 99 cents a pound. The same apples at Safeway were $2 a pound. If you love fresh seafood, they've definitely got you covered. Lots of live fish, crabs and shellfish to choose from. If you want, they'll clean and deep-fry your fish for you so that you don't have to stink up your house with fried fish smell. The frozen section has a million different kinds of dumplings. I may buy a couple of steamer baskets (they sell them here) that you find at dim-sum restaurants and start experimenting with all the trippy dumplings available at this place. If I worked in Newark, I'd probably stop here for freshly made dumplings in their cafe for lunch occasionally. There are all kinds of products here that I'll never try thanks to my Western-raised taste buds. I remember when there was only one Ranch 99 Market in the area. We would have to drive all the way down to San Jose to get some Asian goodies. Now, they're everywhere and that makes me happy. This is the Ranch I usually go to if I need to pick up seafood or Asian vegetables. I was here over the weekend to pick up some salmon. The salmon was fresh and was priced at $8.99/lb. I don't if that's expensive or not but I still bought it. I didn't pick up any vegetables from the produce section during this visit but they usually have really good deals on vegetables. They carry a lot of produce you can't find at Safeway or other American supermarkets. The parking isn't that bad either. You park at a diagonal so you're less likely to get hit by a bad driver.
