Not friendly at all. As a female requesting a taxi ride at a late hour, RJ did not seem to be the right person to offer service

I was in Newport for a Wedding and used A-1 to get from Providence Airport to Newport. The driver talked non-stop from the airport to our hotel. Some of it was interesting historical things but I just wanted silence. We got to our hotel and set up the pick up for the morning of our flight to our return destination, and had us get up WAY to early. We were early to the airport and it wasn't even open yet. Not to mention there weren't any other cars on the road at the hour we were. We could have slept for another 30 minutes, instead of being 30 minutes early. I made a reservation with this company for travel which I canceled well in advance to the scheduled pick up time. I asked RJ to make sure to cancel the transaction since I had to provide billing Information up front. He claimed that he didn't know how to cancel a transaction and submitted the charge even though he never provided the service. Wish that I had saw the previous review before contacting this company. Rude, unhelpful, overpriced. Called in advance to ask how much a trip from Jamestown to Newport would be was told $25 max. I called to get the cab to Jamestown and the driver told me she wouldn't "Come out that far (it's 15 minutes away) for less than 50 bucks. When I told her that her dispatcher had told me a few hours earlier that it would be half that she said "If you don't like it get another ride." And proceeded to hang up on me. My wife and I rely on RJ whenever we need a cab. We always get great service and RJ always answers the phone when we call. Try it yourself! The funny thing about the other comment below is that RJ doesn't even own a computer or a smartphone and has never sent a text message in his entire life! They must have meant some other company. I would give 0 stars if I could. They confirmed our pick up and then never showed up. Huge disappointment. Will never attempt to book again.

I don't understand a couple of the previous reviews; i.e. there was no 'she', no dispatcher. That being said our experience with RJ for a tour of Newport was marvelous. He is a native and is thoroughly familiar with the area and entertained us with lots of interesting information about the families as well as the landmarks. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of Newport with him. He met us promptly at the agreed time and steered us to a place with delicious lobster rolls for a light lunch; loved it! read more

Okay, so the one star is because the are the cheapest cab/shuttle company in the area per hour, but when you factor in the 5 hour minimum you have to book things for and the added (required) gratuity you can do better. I tried to book them for my wedding and it turned into such a hassle that I couldn't take it anymore. For over two months I tried to get them to officially reserve my date. Why so long? Well, the guy who owns it refuses to use e-mail because he "[doesn't] want to have to sift through 40 e-mails per day, you know?" He also refused to take bookings and payments over the phone without my sending him a letter in the post. Which I did. Twice. The first time it may have gotten lost in the mail but going off of the fact that it took me calling him to get him to acknowledge letter #2 I suspect he got the letter and was "too busy" to get in touch with me. He said he'd call me back regarding letter number 2 and never did, even after I called him multiple times. I was practically begging the guy to let me give him my money and the way he acted made it pretty clear he could care less about keeping me as a customer. To put the icing on the cake he (RJ) had a habit of answering the phone, listening to me for about two minutes, and then telling me is was too busy to take my call and could I please call him back? My personal favorite excuses were, "I'm pumping gas right now," "I'm in the gym locker room and just about to take a soak in the hot tub," and "Things are just CRAZY!" When I called to inform RJ that I wouldn't need his services anymore and that I was disappointed by his lack of professionalism he informed me that - unlike SOME PEOPLE - he has a personal life as well as business and he can't be expected to be available to his customers ALL THE TIME. Gawd. He also told me that Newport is "a different world" when it comes to cab rental and that my expectations were completely out of whack. Well, I'll give him this - RJ was consistent in his complete lack of professionalism and my expectation that this would improve was indeed "out of whack." As much of a penny-pincher as I am I had enough and resigned myself to paying an extra $100.00 just so I can deal with someone who can do me the courtesy of acting like they want my business. If the booking process lines up with their actual shuttle services in any way I wouldn't trust them to transport my luggage two blocks, let alone my loved ones ten miles. read more

I called to make a reservation with A-1 on Friday for a Saturday night pick-up in a town car (as taxis are unavailable for scheduled Saturday night pick-ups). As I said I lived in New York City but would be traveling to Newport for the weekend, the gentleman who answered the phone called New York City taxi drivers "towelheads who sleep in their cars" - an example of fine white New England hospitality. Regaining his best behavior, he told me that A-1 would likely arrive 10 minuets before its scheduled pick-up time, that the company really cares about its customers, and that I should keep in touch early in the evening on Saturday. I called Saturday four hours before my scheduled reservation to confirm the car; the phone representative confirmed my reservation. Our pick-up time then came and went. It took 10 minutes to reach the phone operator at A-1, who then told me that, despite acknowledging my confirmation hours earlier, A-1 had more or less ignored my reservation. She then gave me two options: 1) Take a ride with a scheduled A-1 van somewhere to the other side of town, or 2) She could send another car, which would arrive in 15 minutes. Seeing as though we had no interest in traveling to Newport East, we opted for #2. 20 minutes later we were still waiting, and with A-1 unreachable, we found a taxi from a different company. A-1 never called me so I assume the car never came at any point that night. The taxi driver we did find told us that reservations at places like A-1 are completely arbitrary as drivers choose to pick-up the passengers from whom they can earn the most money, not the people who actually make the reservations. You've been warned - make a reservation with A-1 at your own risk! read more

Unscrupulous, dishonest...and the owner YELLED at me a lot while he was cheating me. He charged 6 hours to drive from Portsmouth RI to Concord MASS. When I questioned this (it's 3-4 hours Round Trip), he said they have no way of knowing. No GPS, no mapquest, no knowledge of the world at all. My son had to direct the driver back to Portsmouth....unbelievable....overpriced.....dishonest and mean. Hardly worth one star....terrible read more

Immediately after that, the fuck face who answered the phone got mad at me and started yelling, calling me names, telling me why don't I call Orange Cab if that's what I want, and then hung up. ...Wow! read more

Extremely helpful & professional - really went out of their way to provide excellent customer service at very reasonable rates.

Waking someone up at 1am and asking them to drive an hour to pick up our son from West Kingston Train station after Amtrak delayed arrivals by more than 2 hours. When Amtrak dumps their passengers, RJ at A1 Car, Cab and Van does not. There's nothing going on in Kingston at that time of night - no other forms of transportation. We are deeply grateful to the kindness extended to us in delivering our son safely back to Roger Williams University. We will definitely call to make reservations with A1 in the future. read more

PLEASE DO NOT EVER USE THIS COMPANY!! I had a party of 11 to the Belcourt Castle in Newport for 10/27 this past Saturday evening. I made reservations to be picked up at 730pm from Ramada hotel and 1230pm from the castle. He informed me that they had another reservation at 1215pm. I said that was not a problem. Dave the driver took care of us that evening. He came at 1215pm to pick up the party. The second time he arrived he allowed over 12 people to hop into the van which was scheduled for my reservation at 1230pm. Needless to say we did not get picked up until after 1:15am standing out in the freezing cold outside of the Belcourt Castle. When I called to complain today, RJ refused to give me his supervisers name and number. Does any one know who his manager is? Please let me know ASAP, I am furious! This was absoulutely ridiculous considering we gave "Dave the driver" a 32$ tip!!!!! Horrible and poor business practice and service! read more

If I could pick 0 stars, I would. The most unprofessional and terrible service I've ever received. I do not know the name of the man that drove me, but I do know that he is the owner (so I'm assuming by the other posts it's RJ). When I called him and told him my location, and that I didn't know where he was parked, he proceeded to most literally scream into the phone, saying that I didn't listen to directions. I didn't see his car because I misunderstood where he was going to pick me up at (he also never specified that he was in a black car, so I was looking for a traditional taxi). I asked him to lower his voice because he was being unprofessional and he told me he couldn't because he wouldn't need to yell "if I knew how to follow directions." I asked him if he always yelled at his customers, and he continued with the theme and said, "Only the ones who don't understand how to follow directions." He also never once tried to call me, and ignored my phone calls for about 10 minutes before finally picking up. He then proceeded to insult me both personally and professionally, saying that if I had listened to his directions he wouldn't have to yell at me, blaming me for his temper tantrum. I told him I would be calling him until I got a refund when I got out of the car, and he, just barely audible enough for me to hear, said in the most sarcastic tone possible, "Well aren't you just a wonderful person;" to which I promptly responded, "Yes, I am to people who understand the meaning of respect." When I requested a refund on Monday (he dropped me off at a train station on Friday), he told me I didn't deserve it and that I lead a sheltered life and have been spoon fed if I am bothered by his yelling. Not only that, but he continued to insult me by saying that if I have time to ask for a refund, that I don't have my priorities straight, and that I do not deserve to represent my country (I am active duty military, recently returning from a deployment). I have never in my life experienced such a lack in professionalism and total disregard for customer service. I have also never been so personally and professionally insulted in my life: and to think--all of this because I requested a refund. After he proceeded to tell me I'm a disgrace to my country (among many other insults), I naturally got offended and raised my voice. He then told me that I have an anger management problem and am crazy (but it's ok for him to yell at me because I "didn't listen to directions"). This is not even half of the ridiculous conversation I had with this bitter and hurtful man. And the cherry on top: he claims that I only want a refund because of a personal vendetta (I have never used this company before, so I'm not sure how I can have a personal vendetta against someone whom I've met once in my life). I agree with every poor rating on this page: it's very obvious that he does not care in the slightest about his customers, his business, or human beings in general. The only reason this has a one star is because I couldn't edit it. My sister's bachelorette party was this past weekend. We called this company at 8:00 Saturday evening and made arrangements for a van to pick us up at 10:00 at the hotel and drive us to Studio 3 (where we had VIP reservations) then pick us up at 1am once the club got out. The agreed upon rate was $5/pp, each way... The van never showed up and no phone call was made to us. We called the company atleast 6 times and all calls went to voicemail. We had to be at the club for our reservation no later than 11:00 so now we were set it panic mode trying to find transportation. Luckily, we still had the most amazing time but their lack of professionalism is something they should be ashamed of. This is not how to operate a business and after seeing other reviews and the poor rating it goes to show what kind of service they offer. read more
