I've only ever purchased from here. Everything is well organized and it's easy to find any item except when you get to the loose comic books. It gets a little harder to find individual issues since their all just together, still organized but just all together. Came here looking for Pokemon cards with my young daughter since there's a serious drought due to investment collectors these days. Was surprised that they had a number of the Shining Fates Premium Collections which normally retail for $49.99 and can be gotten from scalpers online in the $60-$80 range, but here at A1? $109. That's some serious gouging and indicative of past experiences I've had with them overall when buying comics back in the day. Would recommend taking your business elsewhere read more

They're great when it comes to selections for comics and magic or yugioh. But my reasoning for the 2 star review is because of Pokemon, they are selling their boxes for over 2.5x MSRP the local game stop is selling for over scalper prices and it's said to see they will not see my business again read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. Came to get cards appraised, and they were taken to the back. When they gave the cards back to me I looked through my portfolio and I noticed my Charizard holographic card was missing. When I brought this up to them they went to the back, found it, and stated they "misplaced it". So basically you are trying to steal people's most rare cards but then if they catch you claim it was "misplaced". What a business model. read more

This shop is large, with a large play area and they accommodate players well. The biggest complaint I have is are the prices. They are outrageous. I went in on black friday to pickup a box of Ixalan for the buy a box promo. They wanted to charge me 114 bucks plus tax for the box. I canceled and drove over to adventures in comics and games, and bought the same box with the promo for 89 bucks. Also, I used to play D&D there which was DM'd by an employee. He was always suggesting that we switch to a different RPG, and saying he could get us a discount on all the books. Besides obviously trying to sell to us, the books with the discount were still more expensive than Amazon. I like to support the local shops, but come on! I need to support myself first. read more

Haven't been here since we gave up Yu-Gi-Oh, best thing ever though Ted took a look at our collection (1/5 that we were able to bring) and he gave us a price and was very informative. I know competitive card shop only does store credit (the excuse was because it's the game with the most stolen cards in it) but A1 gives you the option of cash or credits with a percentage (call ahead first and see if there's a buyer) Thank you Ted for all the help and information you gave us while waiting and shout out to the rest who put on FullMetal Alchemist while we waited although it was intentional, y'all are awesome and will be seeing us in the near future. read more

A-1 Comics is the Disney Land of comic book stores. Yes I am sure there is a bigger store somewhere but this place is bigger than most comic stores I have been to. Their selection is pretty good. They are open late. Their pricing is about the same as any other place. What sets this store apart is their awesome staff. I have to agree with the MANY negative reviews on this location ( ONLY ). People who are only there for their paycheck, and that's it. Standing at the counter, reading comics,or whatever..and treating the customers as if it interferes with their day to even talk to you. Ask a question.. get a shrug and a monosyllabic answer. No offer to address your needs or wants...barely an acknowledgement of your existence at all. Pathetic. I would MUCH rather spend my $$$ at a place where they actually WANT customers. read more

I would agree with the other reviews on this Roseville location about customer service. (I have a super saver bin at the Sacramento location and often times I found myself wandering to this location for variants and other back issues). So as we all know Wednesday is one of the better days of the week so I went there early just before they open, hoping I can find some covers that I like. About five minutes or so browsing over the shelves ,I went over to the counter and ask for an Infestation #2 variant if there is any (a long shot for me) since they did not put the variant covers on the shelves yet. The guy took the variant covers (on a pile) and browsed it, now I don't have any problems if he had turned his back over and browsed it but he was facing me and browsed at the variants in an ANGLE that i can't see the titles he's browsing! and that was VERY OBVIOUS (and yes some people can be observant!) and i was thinkin' WTF! shoulda turned yo back so at least I can't see what yo doin'. Now I'm thinking cancelling my super saver bin and going to EmpiresCV, Comics and Collectibles or World's Best Comics! yes there are other stores that would love me to spend my money on them! I ain't coming back to this store again. read more

Good place to get your comic book fix. There is an abundant array of comics at this place and the comics are layed out in plain view. Plus there are a number table-top games there too. My kids love coming here to check out the Pokémon cards and other card games. read more

I usually come here for the newest X Files magazines and they have been doing better at stocking more. Today, I was a bit perturbed as when I first walked into the store I slipped and fell. This is a great comic shop. They have a lot of staff, all of whom are really helpful. Tons of stuff besides trading cards but lacking in sports trading cards. Only giving 4 stars as I wish they carried more sizes in sleeves and top loaders and the parking lot can be a little tricky, especially if they have an event or a sale. read more

Big store that I could easily spend a few hours in. I'm not a huge reader of comics, nor an avid game player, but somehow my son has managed to pull me into both worlds, and we visit at least a few times a month. For comics, there's a big wall of new releases from the major as well as indie publishers. A few aisles of trade paperbacks, toys, and board games as well. But, as others have mentioned, their biggest draw is probably trading card games. On any given day, you may see the other half of the store filled with players of Magic, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Weiss Schwarz, and Cardfight Vanguard, among others. It's a wide spectrum of players (with an equally wide spectrum of social skills and personal hygiene habits, sorry). You can browse their card singles in the display cases, or peruse the binders behind the counter. Pricing varies. I find some things here to be cheaper than department stores, and others substantially more expensive than online. Card singles, however, seem to be quite reasonably priced, even compared to online. Staff is generally pleasant, with some more helpful than others. The female employees here seem to be the most customer-service aware. Have an A-1 Day! read more

I've been a customer at A-1 since they were over in the TJ Maxx shopping center. These days I only go in there when they have a sale; mainly because every time I go there on a 'slow' day all the employees seem intent to watch my every move as I browse through the store. I went yesterday for their Halloween sale and inquired about getting a booster box of Magic: The Gathering and they told me a box would be $115.00 with the discount. You can get a box for about $90-$95 at Amazon.com (the most recent sets anyway). There was also a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament or something going on and a player asked an employee to borrow a pen so he could draw a [insert inappropriate body part here] on a card. And people wonder why comic shops have a bad rep for being havens for weirdos. read more

I can't believe how they choose to treat customers at this store!!! My kids and I occasionally attend Pokemon card tournaments here, however since we have a large family and other activities on weekends we seldom get an opportunity to complete a full tournament requiring us to drop out Of the tournament so as not to affect the other players brackets. We have always seen this as a courtesy and have obliged the policy of informing the staff we are about to drop from the tournament. Today we arrived with my youngest son who was eager to play in the tournament, However we were told by an employee named Vanessa that we would not be allowed to play since we had "dropped out without informing her too many times" it had been at least two weeks since we had even been in this store. When I told her that couldn't be the case since I typically send my oldest to inform the staff she simply stated that "we needed a few weeks off" barring my son from playing. This would have been his first entry into a full tournament and he was looking forward to playing against others his age. As a parent I'm offended and outraged that they would not only turn away paying customers (we typically buy cards and other products here as well) but children from entering a card game that is aimed at casual play!!! I plan on filing a complaint with their management as well but for those of you aiming to buy your kids Pokémon cards or simply introduce them to tournament play as whole do yourself a favor and AVOID THIS STORE. There are plenty of other great card stores nearby (Corey's cards and games is on the same street and the owner really takes care of his customers) Any business owner that prides himself on appreciating and taking care of his/her customer would have been disgusted by this behavior. Just started reading comics again after a few years absence. This place is great! Awesome selection of new comics, back issues, and collections. Plus they have bargain bins up front - bargain bins are fantastic! Staff is always pretty helpful and knowledgeable when I'm looking for a recommendation on what to read. This is what I consider an established and well-stocked store. I perused it's wares for graphic novels and found a wide variety of things I'd never heard of, things I'd nearly forgotten, and, most everything I searched for. I couldn't help but notice that the modeling/table-top game community has a strong presence here, and a variety of TT merchandise is for sale. Other than that, it has the additional merchandise one would expect from such a store, replete with posters, film industry marketing products, etc. No unicorn horn dust though. read more

I have been to both A-1 locations and both have a lot to offer. That being said they are slightly different in what they specialize in. This location ( Roseville) is more built around gaming, and seems to have a great base of regulars that are always playing either table top games or trading card games. I've taken my son to pokemon torments here and there is a great turn out. I do some gaming myself, I found some people to play board games with here and it's great fun. I am a comic fan first and foremost, so i wont say this is a gaming shop first with a comic section, its the opposite.. its just that the Sacramento location seems to lean more on having a massive library of back issues and rare books. I have seen some awesome rare back issues on the wall, books that i would love to own at some point, and easily found any graphic novel i cared to look for at this shop. This is easily the best comic shop in northern California. They are always extremely helpful and friendly. They make you feel like family. And one awesome employee turned me on to my now favorite comic run matt kindts XO-manowar. They know exactly what i like and always throw in something new to check out in my saver. Also today when i came in to get my saver they had a nice surpise waiting for me. A freaking XO-MANOWAR poster that they just gave me for free. Means alot that they remembered how much i love XO and thought of me first when they pulled it off their window. I will never get comics from any other shop. Store is clean and well maintained with a nice selection of the newest comics. Also a nice selection of back issues keeps me coming back. Now for the negatives one being the parking. When magic/pokemon/yugioh card tournament's are going on the parking fills up fast due to the small parking lot and you're left parking in the wiener schnitzels parking lot. Also they never have new action figures in stock. So if the first shipment of figures sells out, to bad. With that being said it's still worth checking out if only for the atmosphere. read more

Ordered cgc book that was graded but there was a chip in it which is damage. I asked them to do the re-holder and just pay for that. they said that they would open up a claim with the post office but God knows how long that will take. When you are in Roseville and you need a comic call them up they can hold it for you. New comics and old comics selection is pretty good but not as good as their other location. They are the smaller of the two A-1 comics stores but more convenient coming from Roseville area and less crowded. The one thing this store has that is a better and larger than the other store is the kids comics section. Found a couple trades that were great for kids. Great place to score your weekly comics. read more

Seems like a pretty insular place with staff that don't really want you bugging them. Bought some dice. The dice are fine. But if the gentleman didn't want me asking him where the rest of the dice sets were, they shouldn't have a little sign next to the dice display explicitly stating that I should ask them where the rest of their selection are.
