A typical road side order and go establishment. The store is small with lots of parking. The doors are next to impossible to open to get in or out. The staff is super friendly. They ask lots of questions and helpful in every way. The store is really small and cramped when it gets busy. If eating in you'll have a lot of takeout order people standing around hovering over you. The food is just okay. Nothing great and not horrible. They use a good size and piece of fish and it was good just a little over cooked. The chicken has a lot of breading and is severely over cooked on many pieces. Any piece that wasn't overcooked tasted great. The breading has good flavor. The fries need SALT; add salt before eating. I'm not up Sydney way much, so when my wife and I were returning from Newfoundland, it was the perfect opportunity to try this area institution. The takeout crowd was steady, even well into the evening on a Sunday, but after a short wait we had our food and popped over to one of the picnic tables that line their expansive parking lot. I snagged a two-piece combo, and opted for a side of gravy instead of a side dish. The chicken was hot out of the fryer, tender and moist. The skin - arguably the best part of fried chicken - was nicely seasoned, and tasted similar to KFC in flavour and style. The crispness of Korean fried chicken is king in my opinion, but this old school style certainly has its place. I am glad that we had it on location, as time and steaming in its own heat would not do it any favours. I always enjoy the concept of crinkle cut fries, but the execution is often a mixed bag. Lick-a-Chick's were somewhere in the middle - not soggy and disappointing, but not crispy enough to be particularly memorable either. Just a decent, average fry that made for a good gravy-delivery-system. Long standing institutions like Lick-a-Chick are still here for a reason, providing tasty treats at reasonable prices, and becoming a part of the community that they serve. read more

I normally pick up A&K once a year when home from Halifax. It always seems to be the same - great tasting coating but overcooked. This chicken is very dry and my large order came out very fast - most likely pre-cooked. Do yourself a favour and go buy a couple rotisserie chickens from the grocery store and all the salad and fries you can eat for cheaper. A& not-Ok! Up your game please!! With that name they must be doing great food to stay in business. And they are. We stopped yesterday afternoon as we were driving by to check it out. Small place with 5 tables only and two were in use so it was not busy. I i wondered how they kept open if this was usual as there is a Tim's right across the road. Ordered two chicken burger combos to eat in. As we waited cars started to arrive and people came in to place orders and the room got quite full. When our number was called I had to work through a crowd to get to the counter and Back to my seat. The combo came in a white cardboard box with the burger wrapped in foil, a small container of cole slaw and all covered over with onion rings for me or crinkle cut fries for my wife. A lot of food for $15.99. I worked my way through the onion rings and unwrapped the chicken burger. My first bite had me explaining that it is the best chicken burger I have ever had. A moist piece of chicken, coated in a light well seasoned batter and perfectly deep fried with mayo and lettuce on a soft Kaiser bun. The cole slaw was sweet and not overly vinegary. Both the onion rings and fries were perfect and not oily. I see why their sign says" the best chicken burger on the island". I think they could expand the region. Went to A&K Lick- A-Chick yesterday. The chicken was very good. The only problem was it was next to impossible to open the doors. Someone had to assist me in getting the door open. So if you're able to get in you can purchase some chicken. When you do get your order you'll need assistance to get out because the doors are so heavy. You better make sure you eat your Wheaties before you go because you will need your muscles. read more

Gord and I had a late lunch today at A & K Lick-A-Chick in Bras d'Or. I hadn't been there in about 25 years. According to their sign, they make the best tasting chicken on Cape Breton Island and the best hamburgers in the world. Quite a claim! It's on the highway between Baddeck and Sydney. Even as late as it was, it was a busy spot. Gord and I both got a three piece dinner ... pop, three pieces of chicken, fries, cole slaw and a bun. The dinner was $9.99 each ... great price for the amount of food we got. It was delicious and as good as I remember. By the way, we both bought a cap ($18.99). They sell teeshirts too. read more

After driving around North Sydney looking for a place to eat for a good hour, we finally stopped at Lick-A-Chick as it fell into just what we were looking for... a place that wasn't pretentious, wasn't a fast food chain, and served simple, well-prepared food. We got what we were looking for. The location resembles that of a diner, and having an ice cream shop across the street (I would guess it to be by the same owners) makes it a strong draw for locals and travelers alike. It is a counter-service location, with what appeared to be a good amount of take-out traffic. There is some interior seating, as well as some park benches outside by the road. All we ordered was a five-piece chicken bucket with fries, split between the two of us, and I got a chocolate milk. Yes, the fries are frozen and unseasoned, but a bit of salt or some ketchup and hot sauce takes care of that... better than being over-seasoned! The chicken, though... oh, the chicken is very good. It quite frankly reminds me of the Colonel's recipe, but not as greasy... which is a good thing. Well worth having for the spice recipe being used in the mix! If you are passing through the area, either waiting for the ferry or having just gotten off of the ferry, and you are feeling a bit hungry but not wanting a heavy sit-down meal or the ubiquitous pizza, then this is certainly a place to consider! read more

After arriving in Cape Breton an hour late courtesy of Marine Atlantic, we decided to stop at Lick a Chick for some supper. The place was busy ( Friday @ 7:30pm ), but our food was ready in about 10 minutes. It was nice & piping hot. The chicken was not dry, but not oily either. The coating was thin & light & a bit crispy. The coating's seasoning makes a chicken that tastes unlike any other. It was good, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. One of my 3 pieces was very salty. The fries are just frozen, crinkle cut fries. Cooked to crispy perfection outside, soft inside, but like so many places that have been around for years (Chicken-burger in Bedford, John's Lunch in Dartmouth) they are fries from a bag! Home cut, please. Honestly? If you grew up with Lick a Chick I can see that you might be a die-hard fan, but I'd still rather have Mary Brown's. Next time we pass by, I will be stopping at Lick-a-Treat across the road. read more

This place is a popular pitstop for anybody traveling along the Trans Canada Highway en route to Newfoundland by car, for the locals, for bus tours.
