We dropped in to A&M Family restaurant for a quick bite to eat on our way out of town. Upon first impression the restaurant is an old school restaurant not quite a diner feel. We ordered mozzarella sticks and onion rings for appetizers. Both seemed as if they were made in house and not from a box! For entrees we had the Reuben, the meatball sub, and a burger. Everything was pretty dang tasty and exceeded our expectations by a lot! This is our new go to when we are traveling through the area. Ate here for the first time with a group of 10. Seated quickly at lunchtime on a Saturday. I tried the Italian Stromboli, cheese and gravy fries and a bite of my daughter's Reuben. Everything tasted really good. Our waitress was friendly and they provide a military discount which is much appreciated. We happened on this restaurant on our way to meet family for Thanksgiving. We couldn't have been happier with our decision to stop. We had iced tea, very good flavor, none of that nasty aftertaste from a poorly kept container. The refills were received, without having to ask. We had the Italian sub and the Philly Cheesesteak, we couldn't have been any more pleased. I could only finish half of my sandwich. The rolls for our sandwiches were lightly toasted, crisp on the outside and the inside melted from the hot off the grill contents. You were able to savor the flavors of the sandwich, not just a mouthful of bread! The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that it just wasn't that kind of restaurant, it was welcoming and clean and our server was lovely. The food was tasty and fresh, but that should be expected. I am so glad we didn't read any of the negative reviews before stopping. If you are in the area, stop in. We didn't partake of any pie but being the day before Thanksgiving the shelves and cases at the reception desk were lined with boxed pies for the holiday which had been preordered by locals to share with their families. read more

If your traveling on I-80 ...great place to get hot food in great family environment, get in, get out fast with no fussing over what to eat off the menu! Please keep in mind you are paying $10.99 for all you can eat..includes salad bar, fresh baked breads, main courses, sides and dessert. This isn't Gordon Ramsey folks, its a buffet. I really liked the salad bar and the creamy sweet/sour celery seed dressing (which I hadn't had in years). Fresh bread was hot and paired well with salad. For entrees, I tried a little of everything. I found all dishes to be fresh, moist and tasty. Walked in with some guys from Ohio who had never been there before either. When I left they said they really liked it as well. A good lunch spot on the way from Pittsburgh to view elk in Benezette, about an hour away. Lunch buffet on Saturday is 13.99. The selections are plenty -- salads, bread, soup, hot entrees, dessert. One of my family's go to spots for eating out. The food is always what you'd expect it to be. Occasionally they get overwhelmed and you might sit for awhile waiting for your server to take your order. The lunch/dinner buffets are usually very good. The breakfast buffets are very average, but obviously faster than waiting on the kitchen. The restaurant has always been very clean every time we have visited. Total disappointment! We only had their buffet at midday, so I can't speak for anything ordered from their menu, but given the quality of the buffet items I seriously doubt anything else would be any better. The buffet consisted of batter dipped cod that was mostly batter, turkey and noodles that was mostly just noodles in gravy, stuffed chicken breast that was dried out and filled with wet bread. Other selections included baked ziti which were OK, Italian meatballs which I didn't try, some sort of beef gravy that didn't look appetizing. Their rolls were warm, but hard as a rock. Their salad bar included a variety of pasta salads, coleslaw that was OK, and sliced cucumbers that felt slimy, so I didn't eat them. Finally, the dessert bar included cake slices, individually wrapped to maintain freshness, and pies that looked like a bomb had exploded in them. Their chocolate cake was surprisingly good. All in all, I left hungry and didn't feel the meal was worth the modest price. I doubt I will ever go back and do not recommend their buffet. Very disappointing. read more

I had the chicken Alfredo. It was good but they could be a little more careful with the Parmesan. The food was good it was cooked just right. They give you a lot for a good price. It was $11.99. A lot better then last time. My uncle had the buffet and loved it. I would definitely recommend this place for a date or just a family dinner. The check was $33.35. Super friendly staff, I mean everyone of them stopped by to talk to my daughter. Even the clientele seemed sweet and inviting. We stopped in on our way to New York for Christmas and this place was festive to the bones! Christmas decorations inside and out! Got the buffet and it looked like a feast I have only seen a few times in my life. You know, when everything is homemade and nothing disappoints! Even the macaroni salad was an A+, Try the pie! The three star rating average for Plyler's Family Restaurant is exactly right. They offer a buffet that looked very appetizing, and offered a fairly extensive variety of food. I decided on ordering from their menu, since nothing offered at the buffet jumped up and down, yelling, "PICK ME! PICK ME!". I started with a bowl of shrimp bisque that was more than a little above average, with a thick, but not pasty broth. It had lots of shrimp, potatoes and carrots. Not bad! The pot roast I had was really very good. It was tender, tasted like beef, and was a plentiful amount. The mashed potatoes were........ well, mashed potatoes. The broccoli was fresh, steamed and not over cooked and soggy. The dinner was sufficiently acceptable that I felt dessert might be in order. I asked our delightful server what kind of pie they offer, and she recommended the three berry-rhubarb pie. It was very, very good, and new to me. I've had strawberry-rhubarb pie, but this kicked it up a couple of notches with two additional kinds of berries. It was a great suggestion on her part. The price of dinner was as reasonable as the food quality and quantity. I'll return, if ever passing through Brookville, Pennsylvania at dinner time again. read more

Homemade pies do not a good restaurant make. We made this a stop on the way home from Pittsburgh and the dining experience at this restaurant buffet was sub-par. Pricing for the buffet was $8.99 for adults and $0.80 x age for small children. We arrived for an early lunch (around 11:45 am) and almost all of the entrees that we had tried tasted as though they had been under the heat lamps from early that morning. The salad bar had some pretty decent options though we didn't try the soups. The homemade pies in the dessert buffet looked nice but tasted bland. The staff was very friendly and this is the sole reason for my two-star rating. Though Plyler's was conveniently off of the highway and provided an easy buffet for a family to dine, I will not be making this a stop the next time. read more

I can't break my addition to buffets, so it was a no-brainer I would stop. The interior was clean and relatively modern which was unexpected from the outside. There was a nice range of salads. I had the pea salad and broccoli salad. Both were heavy handed on the dressing. I hadn't seen cold baked beans since Europe, so a pleasant surprise. The meats were all tender and juicy. I had pot roast and turkey. I also had a ham loaf. Must be local and an acquired taste. The desserts were stellar. Cherry rhubarb pie, pecan pie and bread pudding with rum sauce - those were worth the trip. read more

"Whatever, I didn't do anything, so..." That's a pretty good way to start this review. That's what the most experienced server said to us right before we left. My partner and I stopped by Plyler's pretty late tonight. We knew they closed at 9 PM, but even so we stopped in at 8:25. In our defense, we would have been a little sooner but traffic was heavier than usual. Both my partner and I work or have worked retail/food service/customer service our entire lives, so we know how annoying it is when someone comes in right before close. We also know that no matter how annoyed you are, you bite your tongue and offer your service with a smile. Not tonight, apparently... So as I said, we walked through the doors at 8:25 PM. That's 35 minutes before they officially closed, which again we were well aware of and had every intent to eat quickly so we didn't hold the staff up. The first thing we heard as we walked through the door was the main-server look up from checking out another customer and say "Just so you know we close in a half hour!". We smiled and nodded, again, we already knew that. As unprofessional and rude it is to tell a new customer that you close in a half-hour, clearly trying to get us to turn around and go elsewhere, we had intentions of being quick and out by 9 so we paid it no mind. We picked our table and went right to the buffet, which thankfully was still hot and relatively fresh. We grabbed our first plates and went to sit down, at which point due to how the inside is constructed, we could hear the servers in the back talking about us. Again, we both have been in the same situation many, many times so we still kind of just shrugged it off. We shoved our first plates down in probably less than five minutes, and before grabbing our second plates we overheard one of the servers say "I can't believe they came in at 8:30, that's so inconsiderate.". Keep in mind, at this point with one plate down each we still had 25 minutes to go before 9PM. Of course, that wasn't the worst part of the night. When we finally went to grab our second plates, there was two cooks/dishwashers (Couldn't tell for sure, they weren't servers though based off the red they were wearing instead of black) standing on either side of the entrance into the buffet room with their arms crossed, just staring at us. One guy even moved his body in the way of some of the food so we couldn't get to it. We sat down with our second plates and at this point, we felt so awkward we didn't even want to eat it. Besides the servers that kept peeking around the corner at us every other minute to see if we had finished eating yet, the same two cooks/dishwashers stood at the entrance of the buffet with their arms crossed yet again, just glaring at us. We knew they were waiting for us to leave because they wanted to start getting everything taken down for the night. At this point, it was still only 8:40 or so. We had TWENTY MINUTES and they were staring us down like we were there an hour after close. We barely ate any of our second plates and due to the guys standing there essentially guarding the buffet, we didn't bother with any dessert, which is a shame 'cause their dessert is actually pretty good. We went over to the register to check out and the main-server girl says, in a happy voice at this point, "Oh, that was fast!". We understood she was trying to be nice (cause it is her JOB), but we were very irritated. My partner mentioned that we are only done eating because we feel awkward with everyone staring at us, especially the two in the buffet entrance. The server, Kelly is her name (supposedly), tells us that no, they weren't standing there watching us and waiting, they were just standing there to stand. Partner then mentions that we clearly over-heard them talking badly about us and Kelly again disagrees, blurting out that "Nobody is even back there". False... We saw them walk back there AND heard them. Partner then asks if there is a manger on duty, and both servers standing there tell us no, the manager leaves at 8. Well that's a crap policy. At this point is when Kelly asks if we were from the area or not, and my partner says no (we aren't from Brookville, we are from Dubois, 25 minutes away) and she says "Yea I didn't think so I've never seen you guys before. Whatever, I didn't do anything, so...". Well, first of all, we have been here at least 3 times in the past year. The other two times were an okay experience, which is the ONLY reason I am giving this place a two star rating. At this point, we were out $40, barely had any food, and had some of the worst service I have ever seen in a place of customer service. I fully intend to call and complain tomorrow, which is something I have NEVER done before. I have never been made to feel that way in a restaurant before. The food here is okay, even pretty good, but it is an expensive place (even with a good experience), and after tonight I doubt we will be going back. read more

I used to be a Sunday morning regular until late in 2017 when their breakfast buffet went downhill. A few weeks ago I decided to see if things had improved. Sadly they didn't. I came in today with the hope of just maybe. Well no such luck. The eggs were over cooked. The bacon was burned on the ends. The pancakes and french toast were empty the entire visit. Holy crap! This place sucks. I don't know about the menu items but the buffet is horrible. Meat was tough, the fish was fishy and the fried food just wasn't worth eating. I made a taco at the taco bar and it tasted fishy... There was no fish in my taco. The salad was subpar and the crab cakes... I'm currently trying to forget the crab cakes. Because our small group all got the buffet, our waitress only had to keep track of our drinks which promptly forgot as soon as we told her. Ugh, the only reason I ate here is because it was the first exit we came to after being stuck in one lane traffic that had places to eat. The one reviewer was not kidding about how expensive it is! To eat at the buffet was 14.99 per adult, which gave me the impression it must be a nice buffet. WRONG! It was small, with lousy choices! The taste of the food was fine...dessert was fine, but I have been to so many cheaper buffets with twice or more options then what they offered. After drinks and paying for children, our bill was obscene! I kicked myself for not choosing the Arby's next door, our bill would have been half or less then what we paid. The place was also extremely dark and dirty, or at least the booth they directed us to was dark, I have no idea why we were seated there as the place was half empty and plenty more suitable spots were open. If you like comfort food, you'll like Plyler's Restaurant. For those of you who haven't been through here for a long time, it used to be called Gilbert's. Their buffet is ok. Wide variety. Salad bar is good and the dessert bar is great. Chocolate cake, yum! Service is friendly. Decor is old fashion family friendly. There parking lot is much to be desired. When it was Gilbert's, they took better care of it. I know it is a favorite truckers stop and they pull in their big tractor trailers. But the broken pavement and potholes ( some are chuck holes, Pittsburgh term) is hazardous for older folks and for cars. The reason for the four stars **** is the parking lot. read more

This restaurant is my usual stop when I travel to and from Pittsburgh as it is just off I-80 Exit 78 in Brookville. I have no idea how this place is on a weekend but on weekdays, I've never had trouble parking or getting a table at this restaurant. The lunch buffet is inexpensive. The food is a mix of country-style cooking, pizza, and nachos. There is also a salad bar and a dessert counter. Save room for pie. They usually have a pretty good selection of pies and I like their blueberry and pecan pies. read more
