This letter is written to describe our experience with A & P Designers/Amnon Porat. First of all, you must understand that we are very ignorant people when it comes to anything mechanical, or construction-related, or anything else related to the care and maintenance of one's home and property. As a result, we have gone through a series of contractors at our current residence and past residence in the Metro Atlanta area. Occasionally, they would start by doing a decent job for a decent price, but once they got the picture of the combination of our ignorance and our good will in wanting to pay a reasonable amount for good work, the work would inevitably decline in quality and the price would skyrocket in each successive job. In the prior State in which we lived, after similar experiences, we had found a general handyperson business and construction company that treated us well both financially and in regards to quality of service, but in five and a half years in Georgia, we had not found that kind of treatment and service here. As a result, we quaked in our boots every time a new property problem appeared. A major problem then developed with our forty year old house relating to the walls and roof near our chimney, in terms of rot and leaking. We asked for an estimate from the previous contractor we had dealt with, and it was thousands of dollars... with the cute little proviso that "further cost may be incurred as the work is done." We then turned to our church's listserve, where people would respond to requests for professional services in a variety of areas, including handyman/construction matters. Three people recommended A & P Designers, and Mr. Porat in particular, all giving glowing recommendations. Our first reaction was, how much did they pay our churchmemebers to give such reviews? :) In all seriousness, and with the fall rains coming upon us, we asked Mr. Porat to come and give us an estimate. We showed him the prior contractor's estimate, and asked him to go over it as well as do a look-over of the area in question. Shockingly, Mr. Porat immediately felt that the other contractor's estimate was for services were completely unnecessary. He pointed out to us in terms we could understand that most of the areas that the contractor had marked for demolition and rebuilding were in quite good shape, and the area of the real problem was in an entirely different area of the roof, walls and chimney. We rolled our eyes, and thought to ourselves, "Oh, great, now he'll come up with another competing bid that will lead us to having to do more work than before." We were dead wrong. Mr. Porat drew up a contract, again using terms we could understand, and guaranteed that his estimate was for that which would solve the problem. We actually went back to two of the three people from our church who recommended him, and asked, is this guy for real? They both said, "yes, absolutely, if he says this is what it will take, then that's what it will take." His estimate for all work came to a couple thousand less than the other construction company's estimate. So we said a "Hail, Mary," and signed the contract. Of course, it had the standard "we have the right to charge more if more is needed once we get in there," etc. language, which he said was necessary to protect him AND us. We said to ourselves, "yeah, right, to protect us, uh-huh, sure, man, whatever you say," and held our breaths. He then brought in his workers to do the job. He introduced each one of them to us individually, telling us a little about their personal stories (one was a refugee from Africa, another was a good old Southern boy, etc.), and personally assuring us that they were not only competent but trustworthy, and that he had worked with them for years. Despite our paranoid ignorance, he managed to calm us down and let them do their work. They obviously knew what they were doing (although we can only say with any certainty that the work has held up through three years of rain, snow, and sunshine so far), and finished within the time estimated. Mr. Porat then made an appointment to come to our house to finalize payment, etc. Yes, time to hold our breath again.... When he got there, he brought us to the area where the work was done (it looked perfect, and he explained exactly how it would work and prevent any further damage), and then he pulled out a bill. I had to look at it three times before I could believe it... it was $400.00 LESS than his estimate! He explained that he had thought that one major portion of the wall would have to be replaced, but upon ripping out everything, it was in great shape, and so the labor needed to finish the rest of the job was less. Our jaws dropped, we paid, and sent him on his way with a promise to recommend him to any and every one. A & P Designers has done about three other major jobs for us, all perfectly done and within the original estimate's amount. I unreservedly recommend Mr. Porat and his company. read more

I actually joined Angie's List to find a good handyman, because I had tried two others prior to Amnon and they were... not the best. We had a really bad window leak that was destroying our bedroom linen. The first handyman said he would fix it by caulking it - that didn't work. Then we had another handyman say the exact same thing, but told us we would also need to install gutters and put in a new window. This sounded like a better solution, but this same handyman put our toilet in wrong, so we decided to get a third opinion. Amnon came over and didn't give us an answer at first, because he said he would have to open the outside panels to determine what exactly the problem was and told us that it would cost $150 to do this. At first it seemed a little "ehhhh", but he seemed like a solid guy and his rationale made more sense than the other two so we went with it. It turned out that it was pretty easy fix that he was able to patch up that same day! Cost us a fraction of what it would have cost to install new gutters, let alone a new window. I hired A&P Designers for a major bathroom project as well as painting of a whole condo. In a nutshell, these guys are amazing!! I spoke to Amnon prior to the start of the project and he gave me a detailed explanation on how he and his team will approach my projects and with that, an estimate as well. The team showed up on time day after day until the project was completed and it was done on time. The work was excellent and beyond what I expected both on for the bathroom and the painting. A&P Designers went beyond the call by fixing minor things such as light fixtures, painting baseboards, drawers etc while sticking the original estimate. Amnon and A&P Designers are not the typical handyman and crew. His warm heart and his thoughtful mind are uniquely unparalleled. You are guaranteed to be satisfied. I am an investor, I have done really small jobs with them, like installing a simple door, or just caulking windows and have also renovated complete full homes with them. They do it all and in a way that you will be happy both with the great quality and with the great pricing. They are only content when you are happy and their priority is you, the customer in such a blatant way. It's simply amazing. Whenever there were emergencies, Amnon was there because he felt the anguish we were going through. He always had ideas to make the job more qualitative, or less pricey. I've been using A&P Designers for more than 5 years. I hired them initially for lawn care services also knowing I needed handy-man services in my future. They have done everything for me from replacing gutters to replacing and painting the flashing along my chimney and the roof shingles. They have designed then built a driveway retaining wall, purchasing stain for the wall to match stain used on the house. I"m currently collecting prices to have my double paned windows replaced and a garage retaining wall patched. They assure that I'm pleased with the work that has been done before I pay for it,. As a homeowner excited for the opportunity to have a "recycled" kitchen installed, I realized that fitting someone else's cabinets in my kitchen would be a super-complex project that only a skilled contractor would touch. Amnon and his talented team worked efficiently in removing the old cabinets in record time and began the arduous task of measuring and creatively fitting the base and wall cabinets to conform to the dimensions of our kitchen. I had my backyard deck replaced. The workers showed up on time and gave me a great price. I was quickly able to see the difference in quality compared to the handymen who previously worked on the deck. This time around, screws were used instead of regular nails. In addition, they replaced all of the rotten wood and rebuilt the frame of the deck. Once they had finished, they made sure to remove all of the debris and left the deck looking cleaner than it had been before they started. To top it all off, Amnon even told me how to paint the deck myself so that I can keep the deck properly maintained. A&P stepped up for me when I needed help in a time crunch. We put our house on the market and needed a handyman and experienced contractor to knock out a dozen small-medium jobs in order to prepare our house to be sold. A&P was the only contractor willing to take on a diverse set of tasks, including carpentry, painting, pressure washing, cleaning, and privacy fencing. Amnon and the A&P crew did a great deck repair, power wash, and paint job for us. From the first meeting to the project conclusion, all went smoothly, professionally, and successfully. A&P helped us with a retaining wall project in our backyard, including transporting the bricks to the backyard, ordering and transporting (by hand) four truckloads of dirt, and seeding the new lawn area. A&P shopped around for the dirt to ensure we got the best price, and had the entire project done in less than three days! A&P also continues to provide us with our routine lawn maintenance.
