Great quality Vietnamese food at low prices. Almost all dishes I saw were under $10. Quick service. The house pho I had was excellent. Also had the shrimp and crab soup noodles which were also good. The bean sprouts, basil, lime, and hot peppers to go with the noodles were very fresh which I can't say is always true at even the better Vietnamese places in Chicago. If passing through Des Moines again, I would try to stop by again without hesitation. A Dong is by far my favorite restaurant in Des Moines. I don't get to come as often but I used to come a few times a week and their food is consistently always great. I haven't explored much on the menu but I've been getting 19c for years and it's perfect every time I go. I'm a vegetarian and used to be vegan and they have so many options which is sometimes rare in Des Moines. My friends and parents who branch out on the menu more always love everything they get as well! The service is always very fast and the workers are extremely kind. They also have take out if you don't have time to sit in and eat and are actually open pretty late which is nice for a late night snack. My only complaint would be that they're closed mondays but they deserve a day off to relax for all the great food they give us. I have never had a bad experience here! read more

The 16c is my favorite! Curry vegetarian soup that has many delicious flavors dancing on my palate. They always accomodate my need for liking things spicy. Will even bring out little peppers on the side for me! The staff is always friendly and their food is so delicious! Crab Rangoon and egg rolls are my favorite in town. Wow, this is seriously yummy Vietnamese food here in Des Moines! Subtle spicy and sweet flavors blended in a combo of rice porridge and side salad (huge) of zesty chicken salad. This place is incredible. I'm from LA/OC, have lived on both coasts in cities big and small, and this restaurant did not disappoint. Had the coconut curry and nearly passed out. So. Good. We ate here around 4:30PM on a Saturday. It was quiet , which is fine by me. Having driven from Duluth, MN, we were hungry undoubtedly. We ordered two of the yellow curry dishes and a bowl of pho. The quality was very good although starvation state can make average food seem great so I do not know if my evaluation is just or not. The service was prompt and courteous. Was it because there were only 3 tables of customers? i do not know. Final review is that we had a satisfying early dinner with good service. read more

So. Good. Fresh. Every time. I've only been to one other Vietnamese/pho place here - and that was because it was Monday and A Dong was closed - but no matter. I live close and this place is tops. They are super nice (and we have a 3 year old), the atmosphere is great, it's CLEAN, fast, and did I mention yummy? (and they don't close between lunch and dinner.....love.) I wish I could find herbs and veggies this crisp in the store! It's amazing. And for the price, I would never even try to make it at home. I can have a huge bowl of hot pho in minutes for less than ten bucks. Win. read more

Love this place! Prices are affordable (we are from Pittsburgh and everything would be at least $3 or $4 higher for the same thing, so we were stoked about that.) I actually really liked this place when I first started going, but as I got more experience with Vietnamese flavors I realized it's really only sub-par. The Pho is really good, but it lacks consistency. Some times it's like heaven, and other times it has a almost anise or black liquorish flavoring that is too bitter. The rice and noddle dishes lack flavor. It does not taste like fresh vegetables are being used. Everything seems like it needs a little salt, which is strange for me becasue I never add salt to anything. The fried appetizers are really good, but all and all not the best Vietnamese restaurant in town. Just go 10 minutes away to Cafe Fuzion. It's worth the trip. Lastly, The service is pretty scant. They bring out food and fill up your water when you arrive, but if you need something else you usually have to flag someone down or go up the the cash register. read more

I appreciate the abundance of options on the menu, but I was sadly disappointed with my visit here. All my friends in Des Moines constantly rave about this place and and it really didn't live up to the hype. I've lived in big cities like Austin, Seattle, Chicago, and New York that have an enormous Vietnamese restaurant scene and A Dong would be overlooked for my pho options. The broth was really bland and the noodles were a tad on the soggy side But I did love the fried shrimp appetizer and I enjoy that they have a large vegan list, but this just didn't live up to the hype :( read more

This is a wonderful restaurant that anyone interested in Vietnamese food should try. I have dined there three times, and every entree has been balanced in acidicy/spiciness/texture, properly cooked, and composed of quality, fresh ingredients. The only complaint I have is that the rice paper on their wraps seems to always be over-soaked and too soggy and sticky. That's a minor complaint, though. I went to this A Dong about a year ago while visiting Des Moines. It was wonderful and I was so pleased to have found good Vietnamese food is Iowa. I'm a huge Pho fan and they did it well. I've since moved to Des Moines and I'm looking forward to returning to A Dong, hopefully it is as good as it was before. I'll update my review if things have changed. @ Carrie M. Vietnamese is a whole different animal than Chinese or Thai cuisine. They use some very unique spices and flavors that some people just don't care for and if people were expecting something similar to Thai or Chinese would be likely be quite surprised by the differences. read more

This was a disappointing meal. We picked it because it was walking distance from the hospital. The pho had zero flavor. I've never had pho before so maybe that's how it is supposed to taste but I didn't even bother to take the leftovers home as the biggest plus here is that they give you large portions. If you find something you like you can easily split the entree. Also, we ordered an appetizer of #88 believe. The shrimp was like rubber. We had the worst service here. No one took our order for solid 25 minutes. No water for about 30mins. I had to flag the waiter down to take our order. When I asked him why he took other customers orders first who came after us, he said he's too busy that he couldn't track of who came first. Pho was mediocre and nothing special. I saw many good reviews for this restaurant, so I thought that I would try it. I was expecting high quality food. I was surprisingly disappointed. I ordered sup chua and a jumbo shrimp dish. The soup was OK. I would say that the jumbo shrimp was not great. They don't give you a lot of meat. I was not pleased with the taste either. Des Moines is freakin' lucky to have this place... Adong is gourmet cuisine and it's cheap enough that I could eat there everyday. I'm a vegetarian and this is the one place that I can go to in Des Moines where the veggie food selection is huge and fabulous. The chef creates about 5 different types of tofu that are featured in each tofu dish. The vegetables are perfectly fresh and beautifully rendered and there's always plenty of cilantro and sometimes basil to add a light flavor without having a freakishly heavy sauce. The portions are perfect. The vegetarian egg rolls are made to order with a lighter, crispy wrap and a very unique/ complementary sauce. I'm addicted to the curry soup. It's very large and has perfectly portioned vegetables with plenty of garlic and tofu. I get it with rice but the noodle option is great too. It's light curry flavor is gentle enough to order if you have a head cold but with enough punch for a Saturday night out. I usually order the vegetarian eggrolls but if I'm trying to watch my weight the spring rolls are incredible too. They're always chock full of cilantro, veggies and rice noodles. The sauce is the perfect complement. The ginger, sweet and sour, Mongolian and lemon grass are all very flavorful as well and a good intro to Adong. The "festive" dishes (one comes with a pancake and the other I can't remember) are pretty bland, so a little less interesting. I assume that natives have different taste than Americans. I just avoid them. My fiancé digs the stuffed tofu and stuffed potato vegetarian dishes but they don't have enough panache for me. He's into slightly simpler flavors sometimes (he's a little healthier than I am) and I dig the complex. I've tried everything on the vegetarian menu and the curry soup is still my favorite. It's filling and incredible. If I could eat there everyday I would. And I'd walk away from the table a little happier and nutrient fortified;) If you're a vegetarian (I'm not familiar with the meat dishes) I can guarantee that you'll dig this place and be shocked that it's in Des Moines. read more

Not my favorite place to eat... Saw all the great reviews on yelp and thought I should check it out but it was simply not good or worth the time/money. We ordered the shrimp rangoon app and it came out burned so badly it was black. They set it down and walked away as if it was fine. Then we ordered two noodle dishes and they were simply just bland. No flavor nothing interesting or tasty about them. I guess if you are really hungry, the portions are massive and you get a lot of food for a great price. But the food is bad. I was recommended this restaurant by a friend, and decided to try it out. He told me to order the pho, his favorite. I ordered the A Dong Pho, along with a couple of egg rolls. I had never had pho before, and I found it to be a pleasant surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.
