Absolutely amazing Pho! Flavor is probably the best I've had! Broth is so flavorful no additional sauce is needed!

It wasn't my intent to review this visit to Rolling Wok. But things change... I just know I really like their food, I was hungry, and it was on the way. A perfect storm some would say! I first tried Rolling Wok during the pandemic and their ability to offer pick up via a drive up window on the North side of the building was a great fit for that season. The food and service has always been on point! I sure wish I made it over there more often than I do... Everything comes out of the kitchen hot, fresh, and the depth of flavor is always impressive. The business is in a strip so parking is easy. It's seat yourself. Seating is a small bar and low top tables and chairs. Standard table service for ordering and payment. Love the decor and vibe here. Modern but with a hint of traditional. The menu is front and back and varies from Thai and other regional dishes, including curries, to a few standard Chinese items. We ordered the following: 2x egg rolls 1x Drunken noodles lo mein style with chicken (4-vey hot) 1x Shrimp and beef fried rice (1-mild) 1x soda (Coke products) 1x unsweetened ice tea Abby was serving us last night and she did an amazing job. I'm assuming Abby as that was what the receipt said. Even though she's helped me before I'm not sure we've ever formally introduced ourselves. I need to be better about that... I do know she's the owner's sister. As far as I could tell they were probably a staff of two last night. She was working the front by herself and I'm sure there was at least one person in the kitchen cooking. The food was great as always! The drunken noodles lo mein style is a favorite of mine! A level 4 or 5 really brings the heat... But Abby is the star of the show! So patient and personable...! Couldn't ask for a more amazing host! If you haven't been... Rolling Wok is well worth you making the short trip out to Grimes. https://rollingwokgrimes.com/

I asked the server about the papaya salad combo and once she told me it's her family's recipe and the Lao sausage was her fav, I had to have it! My food came out perfectly! Sticky rice was perfectly made, the papaya salad had the exact amount of spice and the sausage was sooo tasty! I'm in town for business, but if I'm back again I would definitely try more of their dishes.

It's had an impact but it's still at the top of my list when I'm craving Chinese food. This weekend was my 54th birthday. My daughter is at camp, but I wanted to do something with my son. The place I wanted to try was China Chef however I didn't realize they had closed their dining room area. After driving from Clive to the South side we changed plans in the China Cheft parking lot and headed to Waukee. We were greeted and seated right away as we walked on and were seated at a booth. The place is starting to show it's age. The carpet...it needs replaced. But overall it's clean and if nothing else it's familiar. We were presented with menus and glasses of water. Staff checked on us regularly throughou the meal Since it was between 1100 AM and 200 PM we were eligible for the lunch special options. It's a smaller menu, but comes with an egg roll, crab rangoon, your choice of soup (egg drop or hot and sour), and the entree. My son ordered the orange chicken with egg drop soup with a soda. I ordered the Yu Shiang shrimp with hot and sour soup and stuck with only water. I LOVE Shanghai's crab rangoons. They're definitely more on the sweet side. I ordered another order of those. Love them! The house hot mustard. Be careful! It's easy to overdo and it will clear your sinuses like tear gas. But it's SO good...! The orange chicken was excellent as usual. The Yu Shiang shrimp... It's the first time I've ordered it there. The deep red of the sauce was a little off putting. I'm used to a spicy brown sauce. The sauce on the Yu Shiang shrimp... This is just a visual thing though. The sauce is spicy and it tastes good. But like they say...first you eat with your eyes and then with your mouth. I'd love to see this changed to a more traditional look. It just looks "off" as is. Great service and good food. And enjoyable birthday lunch...and we got to sit eating down in the restaurant. Lol Always a great option in my regular rotation! https://shanghaiwk.com/

I've lived in SF and Chicago and never seen this type of place before. It's an untapped area in the food market and so clever! I've even visited Vietnam as a tourist but never tried the street food there (because I didn't want any stomach problems) so I was very excited to stop in after my hair appt. The place is fun, clean and bright. The workers are very attentive. I was greeted upon entry and waved goodbye to as I left. They actually have a lot of food and drinks to offer but the signs for it were a bit scattered. They had a chalkboard of Boba drinks and street snacks. But there is also a menu at the front counter that has different options for food (sticky rice, stir fried food and desserts) and also different options for drinks (various types of Vietnamese coffee, smoothies, tea lovers, squeezed drinks). I had a bit of trouble trying to stay focused on what I really wanted. I ended up ordering the sticky rice (stuffed with ground pork) and the deep fried spring rolls. Both were delicious and came with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. Near the cashier there were other prepackaged home made sweets. I bought this homemade snack made of bananas, pineapples and peanuts. It was very yummy! To the left of the cashier were other individually wrapped snacks (one of the snacks looked like it had durian in it), soft drinks and flan. Maybe in the future they can make asian custard tarts? Or Chinese cake with sponge cake and fluffy icing? I am a huge fan of Vietnamese food like banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches), bún thịt nướng (Vietnamese grilled pork and cold rice noodles), Chè Ba Màu (three color dessert) and shrimp spring rolls with peanut sauce. These are probably not popular local Iowan flavors but I'm keeping hope alive that if they make it, the people will come. I look forward to seeing what other options this place will offer.

Dinner was Dragon Roll, Pho (Rare Steak and Meatball), Chicken Pad Thai and Ramen Noodles with Chicken. The food itself was delicious and prepared perfectly. Only downside was we ordered hot tea (Jasmine tea) which they apparently ran out of and it didn't arrive until we were well onto our main courses. The friendly seemingly inexperienced staff seemed overwhelmed by the full house (had to ask for plates for appetizers, long wait tor check and to cash out) but we went with the flow and enjoyed opportunity to hang out and spend time chatting. The egg rolls were the star of the meal: hot, fresh, crispy, and packed with flavor. Easily my favorite item. I ordered the Brisket Pho, and while it looked great, it was just okay for me. Having eaten pho across California, Alaska, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas, I usually look for a clean, rich broth with a slight sweetness. This broth didn't quite deliver that flavor profile, and the brisket was a little tougher and chewier than I expected. My total came to $40.03. Was it the best pho I've had? No. Was it the worst? Not even close. The atmosphere and service were excellent, and the egg rolls alone are worth ordering. I'd come back to try other items on the menu. If you're in the area, give Pho Shobu a try and see what you think for yourself.
