Nobody gets married anticipating that they'll ultimately divorce. In the event you need these services and you're amenable to finding a solution that works for the two of you, then Barney is your best bet. Under most circumstances I think his flat rate deal makes sense. Regardless, even if you go over and you're charged at an hourly rate, it's significantly less than if each party hires an attorney and takes it to court. Once you do that, you've handed over all the decision making to somebody who's not you and your soon-to-be former partner. You have to know what is 'enough' for you and not be seeking to take your soon-to-be former spouse to the cleaners. You have to be willing to sit with the messiness of it and the emotionalness of it and trust the process. Barney's really good at letting things breathe. He's not ignoring you when he doesn't answer your email quickly. He's letting you marinate in your own stuff. And you have to. You and your soon-to-be former spouse are untangling finances, residence, kids, belongings, assets .... It's a lot and on top of that, it's emotional. No one person in this process is going to be super happy. But if you can walk away from it feeling as though it was fair, that's the best anyone can expect. Definitely hire a consulting attorney to review your document to watch out for your best interests. But you need to keep them in check with acknowledging what you know you've given up in exchange for peace of mind and cohesiveness in the light of separation/divorce. Barney is a blessing. I went to a guy in Poway before him for a consultation. Fancy office, good talker, smooth and made no bones about how dialed in he was and that if I brought the money, he'd crush my ex in court. I walked out of there knowing I couldn't do that to the mother of my kids and fate led me to Barney's office. He's a good, honest man who wants to make the process as painless as possible, ESPECIALLY for the kids. I don't know who Nessa D is below, but she's either a fake, or she's disgruntled because Barney wouldn't blindly be her attack dog. He will be your advocate when it's needed, but he's adept at walking you back when you're on the edge and feeling angry.
