Ken and A-K Landscaping just completed a large complete tear out and rebuild of our entire back yard. It involved tearing out all of the old ground pavement in addition to the build work. We have a wood retaining wall and wanted a stone retaining wall to be built in front of it to hide the wood wall. We wanted stone planter boxes, stone window planter boxes, lighting, re-routing of the water drains, reworking of the sprinklers, and more. The project turned out absolutely beautiful. It is everything we had hoped for. And it is important for me to say that not only was Ken a pleasure to work with, he crew, that was at our house for a little over three weeks, was also a pleasure to work with. His forman, Nacho, has been with him for a long time and really knows how to get the job done and is very nice, as was everyone else who came onto the property to work. When the job was finished, everything was cleaned thoroughly. They removed all the building material from the front driveway, and then swept and washed the driveway until it was cleaner than when we started. The price for the project was high, I cannot lie. However, I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for and we believe we got exactly what we were expecting for the money we paid. We couldn't be happier and we highly recommend Ken to anyone looking for a great guy to work with and a great crew to do your project. read more

Ken and crew just finished installing an artificial putting green in a courtyard area for me. I was very impressed with his communication, promptness, and the quality of work. While this wasn't a huge project, he finished the project within a few days of my agreeing to use his services. He was great to work with and his crew was just as great. He explained the process, offered suggestions, and worked to meet my vision of the project. He was back today to answer some questions I had on the color of the green, but as it turned out, the color had been darkened by dust that had settled on the green. Ken has completed two major projects for me in the past year. He installed two beautiful flagstone patios, one for my main house and one for the guest house. Because he is reliable (so often not the case with contractors)--and reasonably priced--I called him back to install my irrigation system. He responded immediately and within a week, my new system was in. This was a rather challenging project because I had many established plants, but Ken's crew were very careful. If they were in doubt about an area, they would stop work and ask me what my plans were for the space. Ken also installed a 16-foot long bamboo privacy fence between the two patios. He noticed that the contractor who had installed the posts for the fence had been careless, leaving one post twisted and out of line. He knew that proceeding with the posts as they were would not have resulted in a professional job, so he called the problem to my attention and had his crew reset all three posts for a very reasonable fee. I'm now waiting on delivery of stone for Ken to redo a large atrium planter for me. I know the job will be done on time and with professional results. I've referred friends to Ken for any landscaping/irrigation/concrete project they have in mind--and I rarely make referrals. read more

I would never recommend A-K Landscaping, and have in fact told many of my family, friends, and neighbors NOT to use them ... I hired them over a year ago to widen my driveway and pave my side yard, including drainage ... the concrete never cured properly and still looks awful, and the drainage continues to be a problem ... and while the workers were on the job, Ken repeatedly berated them in front of me ...poor quality, poor service, poor owners, poor experience ... wish I had never used them! read more

We used A-K Landscaping to pour a new driveway. We have a colored walkway and wanted the two to be similar in color. We knew that they would not match exactly, but asked Ken if he could identify a color that would be similar. I stated that if he wasn't confident they would be, we would go with a plain white driveway. But Ken repeatedly stated it would be similar. He couldn't have been further from the truth. The current walkway is light brown; the color he chose dried to a pink hue. They aren't even in the same color spectrum. Yes, I agreed with the color he chose but was relying on his professional experience to know the end state of the color. Big mistake. When I discussed this with him after the pour, he had a litany of excuses for the huge discrepancy in color - the colorant doesn't blend evenly, it never exactly matches the color chart, etc. If he had told me any of these things prior to pouring the driveway, I would have gone with white. But he never mentioned these were possibilities. When I asked him about it, he just keeps repeating "you agreed to the color." In addition, his team destroyed one of our landscape lights. When I showed this to Ken, he said to "put bark around it and no one would notice." Really? How about offering to replace the light. And now, less than six months later, our driveway has numerous cracks. Asking other hardscape companies and doing my own research, cracking this soon after a pour indicates the sub base was done poorly or improperly. After numerous emails, Ken finally came out to look at it and his response was, and I quote, these things "just happen." Throughout the entire process, there were numerous issues but Ken has taken no ownership, no accountability and provided no solutions. When you pay someone thousands of dollars, you expect professionalism, accuracy and someone who will work to resolve issues that occur, particularly if those issues are due to his team and poor workmanship. You will get none of these qualities from Ken and A-K Landscaping. read more
