We recently had Steve and his team complete a major project at our house. We were replacing lawn areas in the front yard and backyard and extending an existing aggregate patio in the back. We also added a large 16' diameter circular brick patio and 6' diameter fire pit in the back. We replanted both the front and backyard with drought tolerant plants and had drip irrigation installed in both areas. Steve's team, headed by Luis and Francisco, along with Jaime, Jose and Jesus, the mason, were amazing to work with! They arrived on time, worked throughout the day and cleaned up afterwards everyday! Iliana, Steve's office manager was also a joy to work with! We had a great experience working with Steve and his team on our backyard remodel. Our project scope included pavers, artificial grass, composite deckwith lighting, pavilion with polycarbonate cover, lights, fan, heaters, as well as an outdoor kitchen that included multiple cooking surfaces and refrigeration units. I would say from start to finish, Gardelle Construction was on their "A" game. This included the designing our front and backyard w/ Steve, which was very helpful as he laid out a functional and esthetically pleasing space that we envisioned. Then the crew began our 3 week project. Each phase of the build went smoothly as our materials arrived in a timely manner and were installed with great care. Upon completion, we were provided a detailed operational tour of are lighting, fire pit and sprinkler system. The whole project came out exactly how we planned, see attached pics. I wasn't planning on writing this review but consumers should know what they can expect years later after Gardelle Construction does a job. They completed our backyard drainage (rain garden), new sod, new plantings and new irrigation system in Spring of 2018. Since then, I've had to replace every sod/grass sprayer because the sprayers vs. the water volume was wrong. I've had whole sections of my grass area muddy and mossy because of too much water and one area that died. The entire planting bed(large) irrigation had to be re-done because Gardell was too lazy to install individual emitters or drip lines, they just put in sprayers, which all broke. Plants died as well. While one whole section of my planting bed got disconnected. I should add that during the entire installation phase Steve barely came out to the project and there was no one to properly manage the job. I had to instruct them on what to do first, second and third. Furthermore, it was pouring rain on plant installation day. No one could read the plans in the pouring rain and the foreman and Steve (who called me) got angry because I had to be there to place and move the plants around. Who else was going to do it? Not Gardell! Very frustrating that I had to manage the project. read more

They built beautiful retaining walls, created a walking pathway with DG lined with river rock and planted drought tolerant plants which we wanted. They did an amazing job! Some 20 years ago I had a new front walkway done. Stamped and colored. Perfect job. Come September 2022 I waited four months for Steve to start my yard. Cement only. Like the other reviews, once the job starts you work with the laborers. Different guy in charge each time. Steve never comes back at job end. You just get the invoice. Cement stamping is terrible. Puddles as the slant is wrong. Their fix was to touch up the bad spots so it just looks like scabs on your skin. For $30K I would expect a far better job. I guess business is good as once completed, they disappear. Not the same company of 20 years ago. Customer loses again. This has turned into an email contact company once initial contract is signed. read more

Steve and team were recommended to me by my landscape architect and I couldn't be more pleased with Steve's experience, responsiveness and support. Our backyard project was what I would consider massive and the largest remodel I have ever endeavored. Pool, outdoor kitchen, complete landscaping, electrical, drainage, irrigation etc. It took nearly two years; timing was not in anyway a reflection of Gardelle construction, rather the crazy permit processes and severely surprises that necessitated retooling designs. Between all the different parties involved, Steve was by far the most on top of things. He also accommodated these many changes with ease and sincerity. I also appreciated that Steve was always happy to impart feedback where conceptual plans might not have made sense in practice, I know I could rely on his experience. Steve and his crew just finished a complete overhaul of our yard, front and back, and we are very happy with the results, communication, quality, and design work. Getting work done during the pandemic hasn't been easy - permits take forever, materials are back ordered, etc. Steve was flexible and was able to adjust his crew's schedule around these challenges and was by far the best to work with of all the contractors and subcontractors that were involved in the project. The crew works fast and clean, and Steve helped us evolve the design as we went instead of being rigid or slapping on change order fees. I had problems with this company from the beginning, owner said he would be here in the morning each day...only happened a couple of times. Trees and plants were planted too deep even after I showed landscaping guidelines to the workers. The drip irrigation was very poorly done and worst of all the gopher cages specified by the designer were done improperly and were a disaster. Orchard Nursery said it was unprofessional and the plant would not survive. I have lost about 1/3 of the plantings in the 5 years since the work was done. I had a big landscaping job done 25 years ago by someone else and did not lose a single plant. The reason I am writing this now is Pennie Rose from Living Arts was just here pruning and had to dig up a sickly rhododendron, the gopher cage (like the others) was chicken wire wrapped twice around the rootball. This prevented any roots from going through and growing, so the rootball was smaller than 5 years ago. We had to throw the plant away. Now I am going to dig up the other four rhododendrons and remove their cages hoping to allow the plants to finally grow from their original size. read more

This company used to be great, but now is a joke. 10 years ago, they did a wonderful job for us. When we needed some additional work done, we set up an appointment. When no one showed up, we called the office and were first told that the appointment was canceled because Mr. Gardelle had a dental appointment. When that didn't go over so well, Illiana shifted gears and told us that they no longer service our area and that an email had been sent to us about that. Needless to say, there is no email. Of course, a company can decide where it wants, or doesn't want, to do business. But this lack of communication is infuriating. I left work early to be here for nothing. We should've known something was up when it was nearly impossible to schedule the appointment. We figured it was because they were busy. It turns out they are incompetent. 10/17/16 Update: I had a concrete contractor put in a wall with lighting last year (Panetta Concrete in Tracy) and the lighting went out. Tried calling Rocco, the owner, to fix, they never showed, and no one else could figure out the problem. I decided to call Gardelle and his lighting guru, Francisco, came over this morning and found the issue and fixed it; SO happy. Again, cannot recommend Gardelle Landscaping enough!! read more

Gardelle helped with doing some landscaping and Steve initially visited and was very knowledgeable. However, once we signed the contract he disappeared and was hardly seen again leaving the job to the laborers. Even when the job was finished, there was no walkthrough with Steve to explain what had been done and how to approach care & maintenance. Regarding quality of work...it was just so so. For example, they did not prep the soil before the sod was laid down which resulted in some dead sod as well as slow soil uptake. All this, and they are more expensive than their competitors. I definitely would not use them again as I saw limited value add. For the quality of work that they did, I wish I had deferred to the lowest bidder as the quality of work was no better. read more

Used this company in the last 12 months. A section of a new concrete walkway they poured was defective, color didn't match because the concrete wasn't mixed properly. Owner blamed it on a overhead tree shading the concrete and preventing it from drying. He said give it time to dry. I knew that was not the problem as did he. He doesn't tell the truth. One of his empoyee's cut a power cord to my fountain pump. He refused to replace the pump or at least replace the cord. All he would do was to repair an underwater cord?!?. I told him that was unacceptable and I replaced the pump at a cost of $90 On both the above two issues we worked a $400 credit on my bill. I would rather have had my concrete poured correctly and my pump replaced by the company. Finally, the owner showed up during the job for 10 or 15 minutes every second or third day; he wasn't around much. I felt I was the general on this job telling his people what to do. I would not recommend this company. read more

We had same experience as scott referenced here. Concrete poured was wrong color and is hideous. Outdoor bar built with inadequate footings so it is now cracking and sinking. Will cost 5,000 to redo correctly. His workers cut irrigation lines, outdoor lighting electrical lines, pulled out plants we liked, tried to fix hot tub and we had to have it re-repaired , and planted plants that never grew. Totally non-supervised workers. Would never hire again. read more

Just finished a front paver and trellis project with Gardelle. Steve was willing to work with me on the pricing, and was very competitive compared to other bids. The only reason for the 4 stars is that we did have a few hiccups in terms of communication regarding the start date. However, once that was resolved, everything went smoothly. We've used Gardelle on several projects since 1999. They have built retaining walls and fences, done concrete and tile work and planted grass and plants as well as doing sprinklers and timers. We did a lot of projects in the last year and have been very happy with their work. They are professional, courteous and creative. If anything has gone wrong they have come back promptly to fix it.
