When I started learning to drive in my mid-20's I was very nervous. I didn't grow up driving a car, but AL&L was fantastic. My instructor was very patient and calm, but pushed me to do things that I initially was hesitant or frustrated with. Overall, I think my experience was ideal. I was picked up on time from my work, and drove around Back Bay, which was a great place to learn. The worst driving school you can possibly choose. After 17 lessons, I didn't learn anything but a three point turn and driving in the street. Absolutely TERRIBLE. Greg is the worst instructor who simply didn't tell me anything and barely spoke except telling where to go. I'm sadly disappointed with this driving school. I really wanted to support a local business, but this was a mistake. Wished I had read the reviews here before I paid $636. THEIR COMMUNICATION IS ATROCIOUS. I called several times before getting someone to return my call the first time (this should have been a red flag). Then, it is not communicated that appointments are not recurring, that you have wait weeks between appointments, or that you can only book two at the time. They are very unorganized and still rely on a PAPER CALENDAR BOOK, which gets transferred between the office and the driver. The worst communication incident occurred when I called the office to verify the next appointment. The admin insisted that my child did not have an upcoming appointment. HOURS LATER the driver shows up ready to pick up my child for the lesson. I called the office again to explain the disappointment with this miscommunication, the woman said that I needed to speak with the driver as he manages the company. The driver calls me and doesn't let me get a word in! I've never dealt with someone so defensive and unprofessional. Then at the next lesson he yells at my underage daughter while she's driving about this incident! The quality if the lessons? Awful. They only reviewed parallel parking on the last lesson only because my child requested it! Guess how she failed the driving exam? You guess it, parallel parking! They were great from the very first phone conversation! The person on the phone was always friendly and she seemed genuinely interested. My instructor was Greg who did a wonderful job. He was always punctual for the lession and boosted my confidence on the road. He had a lot of patience with me (and other learners) and had a sense of humor. They called me a day before my road test to remind me about my appointment and to make sure I had all the papers ready. Thanks to Greg I got the license my very first attempt. Great experience for my daughter eileen. We are still waiting on the road test which is aug 15th the DMV is so backed up with road test dates Anyhow Eileen's first instructor wasn't very nice then I figured lets do the driving times differently well low and behold we got Aldane who she absolutely ADORED! He was patient and pointed out things to work on and had her parallel park until she was use to it! By far i feel he is a wonderful instructor and I can't say it enough. Stay tuned for road test results august 15th ... if I had the money to have aldane take her I would in a heartbeat she is so focused in the car with him and at ease. I was pretty surprised at how efficient this driving academy was, they're like the hidden gem of driving schools. They offer various packages for driving and they will pick you up and drop you off anywhere you need to go. I had lessons during my lunch break where they picked me up at Park Street. I bought the 10 lesson package - which means that the 9th lesson is practice before the test and the 10th lesson is the test itself. The package cost $385, which included the car and sponsor for the test. The girl who answers the phones is extremely patient and very kind. Classes are scheduled as you proceed and simply require that you call the 617.361.3666 number. I scheduled my own road test, but you can schedule it through the school as well. My instructor was the best, he never raised his voice or panicked, he tested me constantly and was extremely knowledgeable. He is also very honest and if he doesn't feel like you're ready for the test, he will tell you so. My instructor has been a driving instructor for years, so he knows when students are ready or not. A lot of the students are those who have driven before but haven't done it in a while, and a number of them come from International backgrounds. The only downside is that you spend some time picking up and dropping other students off, but for the most part, you get to drive at least 45 minutes each lesson. Driving schools tend to be awful experiences, but I really enjoyed mine. read more

I meant to write this review sooner. It's been 2+ months since I obtained my license. Five star all around. I passed my exam first try in Braintree. Wish I could remember my instructors name but he was straight forward and very knowledgeable. I decided to finally get my license well into my 40's so just know it is never too late to obtain. I am glad I went with this driving academy and recommend them to anyone who is willing to learn! P.S. the pick up and drop off (home to home) is an awesome bonus not many other driving companies implement. They are always on time (often before time but not without notifying you first). Fantastic from beginning to end. They always answer the phone and are very friendly and knowledgeable. I paid $490 (roughly) for 9 lessons + driving test. I was able to schedule lessons easily and they would always pick me up from work. I don't understand reviews below that complain about dropping another student off, it happened to me a couple of times, but hello! You're driving! My driving instructor, Greg, was patient and a great teacher. He taught me everything I needed to know to become a safe driver. We did lots of three point turns and parallel parks. I drove through busy streets in Boston and Cambridge and feel confident now as a driver! I passed my test at the Cambridge Armory, I botched the parallel parking at first but passed! A-L & L was quite impressive. From beginning to end -- they were A+. I had let my driver's license expire after first moving to Boston, so I needed to hire a car, a sponsor and some extra time to drive the city streets before my road test that morning. My instructor Greg picked me up bright and early, on time, in a newer model car (no tin cans like I have seen elsewhere from other schools) and we were off! SO PLEASANT!! If anyone is looking for a super driving instructor -- ask for Greg. He's truly exceptional: professional, funny, relaxed and kind. He is on your side 100%, has great tips to keep you focused on confusing streets and he keeps your nerves in check. This came in handy because my RMV examiner turned out to be a rude and crude, sadistic, misogynistic idiot -- HOWEVER knowing that Greg was there, supporting me in the back seat, I was able to get through that very disturbing and upsetting situation. Please do not go to this driving school . They're not good instructors and do not take the time to go step by step they just expect you to know when you sit in the car . They just tell you to go then get upset and become very impolite when you are clearly having a tough time . The instructor yelled and was very aggressive . Having recently passed my road test, I am thoroughly pleased with the driving instruction provided at Al&l. As a new driver with no prior experience, I met with Greg over the past three weeks for lessons. Thanks to his patient supervision, I was able to overcome my anxieties about driving in the city and successfully pass the driving test. As other people saying here, they are very professional, pickup you on time, help you booking driving test quickly, etc. I have failed 12 times in UK, and got my UK driving license on my 13th. So didn't really expect to pass the US road test on my first time. I have booked 10 lessons package, and Greg taught me to be a better driver during those lessons, so I have much more confident for the test. They are very good, and worth every penny I paid for. I've recently purchased a package from them and did research for them compared to other companies their value was very reasonable . Honestly I'm not sure what these other people are talking about the i instructor took their time with me made me feel comfortable and helped me out ALOT in a short period of time . I was even a little late they were understanding which is nothing I'm proud of since I value everyone's time. I had a few questions at the end which was ALL answered BTW. HAHAHA. I was the stupid one. I should have listened to the person that said your lesson will be picking up and dropping off students that drove before or will drive after you, respectively. What sort of magic did they use on me that I did not realize we had not practiced parallel parking until my 7th lesson? I purchased the 9 Lesson (Road test included) package for alittle less than $500 and had my first class on April 25th. Being a bit nervous to start, I was full of relief to see that my driver instructor Lawrence was friendly and created a no pressure atmosphere. Despite us picking up another student -a younger girl, there to observe, it still wasn't intimidating. I had a different instructor the second time, Greg. Greg was my instructor for nearly all my following lessons. He was not only patient with me but was always clear with me on how to correct my mistakes. Yes, you pick up and drop off students and sometimes you observe but I found that it helped me a lot to view the mistakes I made as a driver form a passengers point of view. It was beneficial to watch how the drivers hands steered the wheel, at what pace in order to parallel park correctly. Maybe once or twice did I get annoyed hearing the instructor constantly tell another student "Signal!" Over and over again, but I tell you what.. I never forgot my signal ! Today I took the road test and PASSED ! Over the course of just alittle over a month, I became prepared. It's clear that the people at A- L & L Driving School are there to help make you not only a good driver, but a safe one. Please please please do not give these people a dime of your money or a second of your time. These people are beyond unprofessional. They screwed up my road test not once but TWICE! I know what you're thinking, how?!? Ok so my first road test was scheduled September 2016 for an 11am pick up. The day of the test al&l called me at 7 am saying that they were outside.. I'm like well you guys are 4 hours early. I was away at school in Framingham and didn't plan to be home until my PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED PICKUP TIME. Ok so that was their first mistake. They claimed they reached out the day before to inform me, but they couldn't get a hold of me. They did not even have the common sense to leave a voicemail! I didn't give up on them just yet. So upon moving back from school I reached back out to al&l. They informed me I had 2 lessons left out of the 10 I paid for last summer. Ok so I go ahead an schedule a lesson. After that I scheduled a new road test, the woman gave me a a date and also a time; September 7th 8:15 am pickup. Not even a week passes I get a call saying they basically gave my date to someone else. Brace yourself for the reason. They claimed I owe them money, but how when I originally paid upfront for 10 lessons and a road test. The woman on the phone couldn't even tell me what for, apparently she couldn't read whatever notes the person before her left, pathetic. But once again they claimed they tried to reach out before they actually took me off but again they had no evidence and left no voicemail. Unfortunately I cannot get any money back. So, I don't really know what to make of this place to be honest. It's my first driving school I've ever been to. I'm really trying to like it because the people are so nice & professional over the phone, but every time I come out of one of Greg's classes, I feel so negative about myself and my driving..... Please note that I did not look at any reviews before taking my lessons with Greg and this is why I want to try to give it the benefit of the doubt in todays lesson, which was equally unbearable. If my next class doesn't go so well, I'm just going to ask for my money back. Everyone is writing such nice reviews about Greg, but I don't see the kindness or the helpfulness in him. He's a bit rude to me (I don't know if it's personal). I'm Christian, so I know that when people are thinking and acting negative I should think: WWJD. Lol. In any case, he is a bit rude, he acts like I should already know what I'm doing (If I knew, I wouldn't be taking the classes), and it seems like he is so miserable with his job. I don't know if it may be the current timing in his life, where he may have something going on wrong in his lifestyle or what! But if I'm paying a whopping $450.00 for some OBVIOUS BEGINNER sessions (when I can be paying other bills), then I expect a bit of patience, instruction, and professionalism. Example A on his Impatience: I don't know how to maneuver a car AT ALL, and I made sure to tell him this information at the very beginning. 1st Lesson: We started driving in silence. Mind you--he doesn't seem very talkative or pleasant, and when I try to start conversation, he just doesn't want to talk. He expected me to know how to turn the wheel correctly and seemed a bit angry when I was turning the wheel too much (hand over hand). NEWS FLASH: I don't know how to drive, like I said in the beginning. Maybe some instruction BEFOREHAND would have done me some good. My apologies, as I thought this was a driving school? Duh! Example B on his Instructions: So after Example A, he bought me to this quiet street to parallel park. Later after the session, when I was on the verge of breaking down and crying, I found that the person who introduced me to this school hadn't learned to parallel park until her 8th session. Wow. So, he takes me to parallel park, after knowing that I'm a beginner, after my trying to maneuver through BOSTON CITY streets on my own (with no instruction on how the car works), after basically telling me that I have no sense of direction. Lol. OF COURSE HE WOULD TAKE ME TO PARALLEL PARK! So, I ask him, "How should I parallel park", His reply, "Just start turning the wheel and back up". I didn't think this would take much effort if thats the case. So I didn't even move AN INCH and he already told me angrily that I was doing this incorrectly. I was very annoyed and frustrated at this point, so I spoke angrily back, and told him that I was doing exactly what he asked of me. Example C on his improfessionalism: So just as I was TRYING to learn how to Parallel park, his phone started ringing, I think it was actually on its loudest volume since it was a Metro phone. Uh how about you try putting your phone on vibrate while your teaching, now, an EXTREMLY nervous driver? Just when I thought he wouldn't pick up the phone (to save his professionalism at least!), he picks up the phone and puts it on speaker, not only so that he can teach me how to parallel park, but so that he can multitask in talking on the phone WHILE teaching me.....this was very frustrating to me. So after speaking to him angrily, as he had spoken to me the whole ride, he tells me "Look you have to be calm, I'm trying to help YOU ." My reaction in my head:THATS HELPING ME? NO! HELPING ME is SHOWING me how to PARALLEL PARK and HOW to DRIVE! If thats his "help" then I'd rather not bother, and I'd rather a different instructor, or a different school all together. Not only any of this, but you'd think that we would practice Parallel parking until I actually GET it the correct way, nope. He just said "You did wrong, lets take a left at the light"... Example D on his lack of commendment: This section is not so important, but it is for those who don't feel confidence in their driving as myself. He doesn't say anything about my driving unless I'm wrong. I never get commended for doing right, so I never know if I'm doing anything correctly. I just feel that I'm doing everything wrong. I think he should at least commend someone if their doing SOMETHING right. If my third lesson is like these experiences, I'm just going to move to another driving school from Chinatown that I seen, WHILE driving with Greg today. read more

I'm sure their driving school is great, judging by all the positive responses from other people. I just wish I could get through to them! Of the 12 times I've called them, all within hours that they SHOULD be open, I've gotten through to a person once. I tried to inquire about how much drivers ed would cost (information that most driving schools put on the website) because it's a convenient location for me to get to from school, but the one time I tried to ask that simple question, whoever answered my call (I didn't get a name. Usually good businesses say hello and give their name when someone picks up!) complained that it was too noisy in my background and told me to call back, before hanging up quickly. I called back 20 minutes later when it was much quieter, no one picked up. Apparently they were open on Monday, even though I called MULTIPLE times throughout the day. HORRIBLE!!!!!!!! This driving school has very poor customer service. It is not worth the money at all. Their instructors are very impatient and will not tell you how to correct your mistakes. The only thing they've done is put their foot on their brake and look at you with a dirty expression on their face as if the instructor is doing you a favor. The driving school is $43 for 45 minutes! You would expect quality customer service right? I thought so, but I was extremely disappointed. I reported the instructor to the supervisor and the supervisor did not care to even hear what happened to cause the dissatisfaction. The only thing LAWRENCE (the supervisor) stated was, "I had a discussion with the driver and he did his job during the lesson." I will take this to higher ups because something must be done about this. Please do not waste your time with this driving school. There is much better elsewhere. read more

I really really want to met the instructor that the last people on this website had driving lessons with. My driving instructor was laconic during my lessons and I didn't know if i was doing right or wrong. I keep making turn after turn and all he said to me is what do i think about that. HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSE TO FEEL ABOUT THAT! This is my first time learning so I really do not know what the fuck I am doing so neither of the instructors were of any help. I ended up spending about 500 dollars for a package and they scheduled me for a road test i was not ready for then tell me that I need practice outside of the lessons. WHAT THE FUCK! If I can get lessons outside of paying for them you think I would be paying for lessons now? I don't have a car I don't have people that can lend me a car or show me how to drive all I can do is enroll into a school and learn and I didn't even get that at all.
