I was assisted on a probate matter for the past 2 years. The outlined process was helpful, but don't expect helpful guidance on matters specific to your case. You'd still need to source an attorney for that. As such, I would have only recommended this service for 'simple' probates under the threshold. After 2 years, APC suddenly is "under new management" with no warning as of 9/14/25. I tried logging in two days after that date, and completely lost access to all of my existing files in their portal. Their website says they are not taking new cases and are only completing existing, active cases. However, I was told via email help that they are 'out of business' and can no longer help me. Now I have no access to my files, lost my retainer and misc expenses money paid. I was 99% complete with my probate when this happened. I'm sorry to hear about APCs closure, and while not a perfect service, they were helpful and saved me money. I empathize with the APC team for the sudden closure and wish them well. read more

What should have been a simple and easy adult adoption turned into a long and drawn-out nightmare. After their initial fee was received, I had to send them additional money "for things not included in their fee". It stated that if it wasn't used, it would be returned. Nothing has been returned and there were no expenses that weren't covered in the initial fee. In addition to that, I paid for postage to send them many documents that were never used and never submitted to the court. All the emails requesting a refund for the unused fees have been ignored. When the documents were finally submitted to the court they were returned twice for missing items. I finally just had them send all their paperwork to me and I took it to court to file. I agree with these negative reviews completely. They will suck money out of you when you are at your lowest point. While going through a tough time, Sandy and the rest of the staff will treat you badly. There is a lack of communication, common courtesy, and NO customer service. The staff act as if they are doing you a favor and forget you are the customer. I just received a random email asking for an additional $75. I needed to reach out to inquire why. There was no phone call or outreach. This is the worst experience! I DO NOT recommend this company! My wife and I used A People's Choice in 2015 to create a living trust. We went to our appointment with Sandy, we answered her questions, showed her our documents, signed, and left. A couple of weeks later we came back to pick up our finished trust documentation in the form of a large 3-ring binder. We were very happy. This year we needed to add two properties to our trust, so our first thought was to go back to A People's Choice. I called to make the appointment, and spoke with Sandy. She was just as pleasant as last time, but she told me that since we were last there, she had sold the business, but stayed on as manager. In addition, now everything would be done remotely. There would be a $450 fee for the additions to our trust. I paid promptly. After that I was emailed a link to their portal. All paperwork would go through that portal, and future communications would be by email. Phone calls cost extra. The biggest shock and contrast from our previous experience was that most paperwork would be filled out by me. I really wasn't prepared for that. I thought that my $450 would at least pay for someone to do the paperwork, just like the first time we used their services. I emailed back and forth with a man named Chase who provided some help, but not a lot. With a lot of help from the internet, I finally was able to complete the paperwork, but without the assurances of Chase, I was in doubt as to whether or not I had done it correctly. Amazingly, I had. I filed the paperwork with the appropriate county office myself because A People's Choice wanted additional fees to do that. I emailed Chase after doing this and asked when we could expect the additional pages to add to the trust binder that we were given when we first set up the trust. Chase replied that they don't do that anymore. I'm pretty sure that a copy of "Trusts for Dummies" would have provided me a similar level of help and saved me over $400 and a lot of aggravation. Sandy will likely respond to this, and I want to make it clear that I'm not attacking her. She is a very nice person, and if she were running the show like she used to when she owned the business, I wouldn't be writing this type of review. If you're reading this, really consider using a self service type company with legal matters. Most persons coming to a people's choice are looking to save money. But there is something to be said for getting what you pay for. Ultimately I hired an attorney who was much more adept at handling a divorce than a self service company and yes I was fully aware they were not lawyers. However having gone through both processes I would suggest any money saved ends up being a wash because there isn't much clarity with the legal process which was ultimately something I needed. I still firmly believe that communication could have been clearer. During the 60 email exchange, I was also trying to understand what it was that they needed. Many of my emails, as I read them back, were confirming receipt of documents they needed that I sent. Hence the mention on my part of poor communication meaning that once docs were sent I wasn't hearing from them in a timely manner. Again, you get what you pay for and I regret attempting a complex process with a service that stated they could perform divorce filing. read more

Sandy and the entire team at A People's Choice were very supportive in our probate case. Losing a parent is extremely difficult, and so is the subsequent paperwork. However, a People's Choice made it easier, and they also charged a very fair price. This saved me and my brother thousands in attorney fees. What I liked a lot was the transparency and digital tools used, as documents were managed via email and on a platform. Payment for court items was also made easy. I appreciate that they use modern methods in an old school industry. That way, most things could be done remotely. And communication was smooth. All in all, I can definitely recommend A People's Choice if your case is straightforward. The only caveat being if you're emotionally too close to a case (such as losing a parent), it might be psychologically difficult to perform some of the tasks, in which case one might want to explore getting an attorney. Update: I happened to read the lengthy response from Sandy, who apparently has loads of time to give a detailed rebuttal to poor reviews - only wish she had been this detailed when I asked for clarifications in my supposed "400 emails". Contrary to Sandy's assertions, I actually did follow up with the probate referee numerous times at the 6 week mark and beyond, but my phone calls and emails were ignored by her as well. Only after the probate examiner for the Marin Superior Court sent me a warning that I was perilously close to risking a hearing for the excessive delay in filing the Inventory and Appraisal and I responded that the probate referee was not responding, did she finally let me know that A People's Choice had not sent the information to her in the proper format - physical mail. It boggled my mind that APC would insist I send the original Inventory and Appraisal documents to them and then destroy the originals after apparently scanning and emailing them to the probate referee. I could have scanned and emailed those documents myself and saved the overnight fees and the time sending them and had to retrieve them in a UPS store in the midst of a crazy house selling/staging day 5 months later, reprint and sign everything and overnight them AGAIN directly to the probate referee, all while worrying that I was going to be called in front of the judge for an explanation. A note on addressing emails with the proper heading: they require you to use a case number they've assigned to your proceedings with them, but the number often varied and they sometimes sent messages in the portal without the case number which I would directly reply to. They would scold me for not including the case number on my heading but the lack of consistency was a bit disconcerting. I read several other reviews and recognized some of the complaints - I spent in the neighborhood of $7500 on a probate and absolutely had the process dragged out due to Sandy's unfortunate decision to email the probate referee my Inventory and Appraisal. I did a lot of the paperwork myself and I had to refer to other resources to clarify some of the forms Sandy auto sent me at various stages of the process. The interactions were pretty boilerplate and a few things were sent to me that had no pertinence to my specific case - they were generic to probate procedures in general, causing a bit of confusion ony part, which was not cleared up by Sandy and her team. I was forced to pay for her team to correct errors on beneficiary names after catching several typos and other errors more than once on the same documents - again, no apologies and lots of recriminations from Sandy - and incorrect invoices, demands for more money, often done in a condescending tone. Again, if you have a really simple case, are willing to do a lot of legwork to get things done, don't mind errors/typos on your legal paperwork, don't mind getting really short, vague answers to procedural questions or requests for clarifications and have no concerns about imprecise accountings/invoicing and a lengthy process (pandemic lock downs made it worse, for sure) then Sandy and her team are workable. Just know the surest way to get them to give you a detailed response is to give them a middling review! read more

I requested help preparing a legal document related to a court case. I paid and then signed into their portal where I was supposed to fill out their questionnaire which would then help them prepare my document. Their "questionnaire" was simply the government form posted in a new page. The questions were exactly the same with no additional context to help me fill it out. So, in essence, they expected me to fully fill out the form in their portal...whereupon they'd simply copy/paste my answers verbatim into the official government form. I realized in minutes I was getting hosed and immediately requested a refund. Despite not providing any services (they take 7-10 business days), they only offered a partial refund because of their "T&Cs". In Summary: They offered no value, they rendered no services, and they still wanted me to pony up $$ for the privilege because I did not realize I was getting ripped off before giving them my credit card. read more

The service was expensive for the level of support given. The sample documents they send you are not tailored to your case. You still have to do all the research yourself. The price you pay does not include phone calls. Each question you have will cost you an additional $75. I paid this twice and each time was given incomplete information. This delayed my divorce by a couple of months as I sent incomplete documents twice to my ex-husband following said paid phone calls. If your divorce is simple: do the research and do it yourself. IT will be just as much work. If your divorce if complex: hire a real attorney. It will be more expensive but you will get something for the money. What this company does is the same that your local court can do for you: send you the documents to fill out and a list of general instructions to follow. Customer Information - I have an earned doctorate (PhD) in business from an acclaimed public university. I attempted to work with A People's Choice (APC) for the last 23 months to probate a relative's California estate. The following are my APC experiences: Communication is exceptionally challenging. The expectation is that customers understand every APC communication and instruction regardless of how vague, misleading, general or incomplete it is. There is a charge for every APC phone call. Several emails are often required to answer a single question. Communication with Sandy M. is especially weak as she seemingly attempts to answer every email as quickly as possible without regard for accuracy or clarity. APC customers are likely experiencing elevated emotions as they deal with legal issues. In 23 months, APC never demonstrated any empathy. APC communication was typically arrogant, making me feel like I was too ignorant to be an APC customer. APC probate knowledge was good but not at the expert level. The documents they prepared often had mistakes or did not meet probate court expectations. Weak APC quality control resulted in a 3-month court delay at an estate cost of $12,000 in lost investment income. Flawed APC documents can be fixed by working with them (see Communication issues above) or modifying the incorrect documents yourself using a PDF editor. APC expects significant customer effort. Basically, they take information the customer provides and enters it into a California probate form. The fees charged for e-fling court documents are 20% over market rates. Contacting potential estate creditors is the sole responsibility of the customer and any related e-filing requested is at additional charge. Due to probate court docket delays, count on paying for the second year of APC work even though APC does nothing additional to earn the year 2 fee. APC offers a solution for the significant statutory rates afforded California probate attorneys. The real business opportunity is for a new competitor to show APC how to provide customer service and a high-quality product. read more

This is a tough review to make. I am not happy with the fees they charge because their Family Trusts are "fill in the blanks". For $600 I expected more personal contact, questions, guidance and explanations. I completely understand that they are NOT Attorneys, and cannot give legal councel. From my personal experience, what I paid for is a fill-in-the-blank form from a kit. The rather cold, harsh and sharp woman I met with was unfriendly both times we met. I'm pretty sure she is the owner. She gave me a stack of papers to take home and "mark up however you want" and an appointment to come back in a week. Making changes to their preprinted forms cost me ANOTHER $100. For two changes, which was having my POA to cc the other heir on all correspondence, and paying my POA a small fee for doing all the work. According to my neighbor, We The People was wonderful and MUCH cheaper. I would definitely check them out before going to A Peoples Choice. read more

I was looking for a quick and easy divorce and this company looked like a great option. I signed up and paid $450. I was informed that there was a divorce case still active from 2014 and I just needed an ammendment. I was told that court documents for child support and custody were needed in order to proceed. I located the doc for child support but did not have one for custody as my ex and I had a verbal agreement with no court involvement. I stated this to the company and was told that without court documents they could not proceed. Frustrated, I asked for a refund and stated that I would just do this myself. I was told I would not get a refund. I reiterated that there ws no court involved in our custody agreement as it was a verbal agreeement between us, we did not need child support, alimony, none of that, just a quick and easy divorce. I was told to explain the custody agreeement with great detail. Idid. Paperwork proceeded. Then I get an email stating that the paperwork is done and their business with me is now concluded, and I am to go to the portal to retrieve it within 12 days. When I question this, "But I thought I paid for a divorce, you charged me $450". I was told no, that I chose documents only. I was offered "Our full service option which provides case managment and filing assistance across this multi-step process would run an additional $400.00", an upgrade to basic divorce - yet on their site the quick & easy divorce starts at $499. With docs complete and only needing to be filed now, why in the world would I be charged $850 total? Online it states that documents only costs $299 and a basic divorce is $499. I paid $450 thinking I was getting a divorce. I asked for a refund of the rest of my money and was told that there is no $299 document only fee on thier website. Go take a look, it IS there!! I was never given a portal to sign up for to retrieve documents. I had to email back and ask for clarification. I was then sent a portal invite. I downloaded my divorce papers (I could have filled out myself- I thought I paid for a basic divorce) and within that paperwork was a printout of fees. It states there is a $10 per email fee (if one decides they have more questions), which still does not justify an extra $200. Total SCAM and rip off and extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. Update: Upon seeing my review, I recieved an email from this company chastizing me for leaving a bad review. I was accused of being a liar. I was accused of stating that they charged me $10 for phone calls (see above, I did not state that). I noticed in other bad reviews the company responds to them similarly; accusing them of being liars and even insinuating that they are not intelligent enough to follow simple instructions. Most companies try to make it right with unhappy customers, this company berates them and slanders them. That is a huge red flag. Had I read the reviews first, I would have looked elsewhere. I could have done this ammendment myself and saved a lot of money! UPDATE #2: If by 'making it right' you are referring to retacting access to the portal (which you stated I had two week access to) for my paperwork after three days (after seeing my review), I have to surmise that our definitions of helpful are night and day. Helpful means you're willing to communicate and guide somebody through a process, what you did resonates more with the word spiteful. I forgive you. NEVER use "PEOPLE'S CHOICE"; especially for probate. I have to agree with all of the other negative reviews about them on here. They are a scam designed to suck money out of you when you are at your lowest point: with the death of a loved one. You need a real, actual, lawyer to do probate for you and stand in the court for you. People's Choice will just dump a bunch of template form emails on you that go on forever. They will dump a bench of generic PDF's on you that you can get for free from your local court house. They will assign some office aide to you and they WILL NEVER take the time to actually study your case or craft the papers to your circumstances. They sell the same PDF's and email forms to everybody. They are just a FORM FARM. The last chance you will ever have to get money in your life is when a relative dies. DO NOT EVER trust People's Choice with your last hope to receive your inheritance. They will screw it up! Their staff are bitchy, over-worked, rude and sloppy. You are just another errand on their over-loaded plates. They cost my family massive financial losses because they screwed up so bad. read more
