This is a really calm atmosphere, all the staff and caregivers are very friendly. Ever since my Aunt moved in, she is never alone unless she wants to be. She settled in quickly. I like the friendly environment, the nurses and administrative staff is very good with her. It is great to see her now engaging in activities to keep her active and doing things she likes. She loves the entertainment. The staff and caregivers are so great with her and are able to get her to take her medicine everyday. She loves the meals and loves being able to sit and eat with friends. Her room is very nice and because we were able to bring some of her own furniture, it feels like her old apartment. The Executive Director Lisa McDonough is the best at keeping me updated on her progress or any health concerns. She is the best. I highly recommend The Terrace at Chestnut Hill for anyone who needs assisted living.

The Executive Director was horrible and I filed numerous complaints against this facility about neglectful things that were observed (with proof). Overall, when visiting there wasn't much life to the facility or much participation with residents from family members...the last straw was when the makeshift closet fell and they blamed my aunt and her dementia. They bagged up her items and left them that way for over a week...check on your loved ones if you decide to place them here. Not at all what I expected...Several management and facility name changes in a short period of time says alot. This has to be the worst facility under Bridge Senior Living...

In many respects, I believe one could achieve a higher level of individualized care by staying in a hotel, hiring private nursing assistance for activities of daily living, and arranging services independently. While the facility presents itself very well from a marketing and sales perspective, I found the actual resident experience to be disappointing. The food quality was consistently below expectations, staff responsiveness was often lacking, and meaningful medical support appeared limited. On numerous occasions, I observed staff members who seemed more engaged with their personal cell phones than with resident needs. One incident in particular left a lasting impression. I witnessed a resident collapse and attempted to assist. I was instructed not to intervene until emergency medical personnel arrived. Fortunately, the resident recovered, but I was troubled by what I perceived as a lack of urgency, compassion, and clinical preparedness among some members of the staff. The activity program also fell short of expectations. Many activities appeared simplistic and offered little intellectual stimulation. There were occasional musical performances that were enjoyable and well received, but these were the exception rather than the rule. I also found the administrative culture difficult and, at times, unwelcoming. Residents who do not readily fit into the established social environment may find themselves feeling isolated rather than included. My overall impression was that financial considerations often seemed to take precedence over resident satisfaction and quality of life. Prospective residents and families should understand that this is not a hospital or a comprehensive healthcare facility. Those requiring significant medical oversight may find that the level of support available does not meet their expectations. Given the fees charged, I expected a substantially higher standard of service, engagement, and responsiveness. The physical plant is attractive and well maintained. Unfortunately, in my view, the quality of care, administrative responsiveness, and resident support did not match the appearance of the facility. For an organization that charges premium rates, the value received was, in my experience, difficult to justify.

She and I were horrified to learn that the flowers would not be placed in her private room (a room for which she pays a hefty fee) but that they would be LOCKED in an office. That office is currently closed, and the person in charge will not be in during the weekend. What on earth possesssed you to make such a ridiculous decision??? If this is typical of Atria, I wonder about the organization as a whole. Do you make peremptory decisions like this on other matters???

There have also been frequent scheduling and payroll errors and a workplace culture described to me by multiple staff as retaliatory and hostile, which I believe is affecting resident care. I recommend families verify current inspection reports, ask about staffing levels and infection‑control procedures, and contact the Pennsylvania Dept. of Health or the Long‑Term Care Ombudsman before considering placement.

My mother had many ailments (both physical and mental). Finding a suitable placement was difficult and our initial attempts were not pleasant. When my mother moved into Hayes things changed. Her health improved, she met new friends, and after a few weeks she informed us that our daily visits, while nice, weren't necessary. The one thing that my mother loved the most about Hayes was the staff. They treated my mother with the greatest of care and respect. From the Administrator, to the cafeteria staff, to the guard who kept her safe, Hayes was exceptional! It has been over twenty years since my mother passed away, and discovering that monument brought back great memories.

As my mother's dementia progressed, it became clear that her needs were overwhelming what my father could provide and we'd need to find a different solution. One of the things we liked about Symphony Square was that they would allow my parents to live together in an assisted living apartment and have my mom "day trip" to the dementia unit. That never really worked out for a lot of reasons, some of which were in the difficulty my father had in separating from my mom, and some of which had to do with the facility's actual ability to keep my mom in the unit. She demanded to leave, and if she could not be persuaded, they had to let her leave. Licensing like this, we have learned, is more important than it's presented. This is a "personal care home with special services" and as such, if any resident wants to leave they can. No matter what their mental state. The best the staff can do is distract and persuade. So, when my mother decided to walk out and go "home" (where she grew up) on a cold Sunday night, even though they accepted responsibility for her while my Dad went out, in the end she walked out of the place undetected. Five hours later the Philadelphia police found her unharmed in a very bad section of SW Philly. Residents can also not have things like a 'geri chair' (big rolling easy chair) or rails on their bed to keep them from falling out because their licensing does not permit 'restraint'. As a result, my mother went to the ER five separate times from October - November because she fell out of her bed. Rolling easy chairs (but not wheelchairs) and bed rails are considered restraints. Ok. Here's what I'd say. Everyone who worked at Symphony Square was very nice and accommodating. The place is high-end hotel beautiful. The assisted living area was fine, with activities and decent restaurant style dining. They are very passive, in that nobody will take the initiative and actually pro-actively do something, you have to ask for them to do anything. ASSISTED LIVING is FINE. We DO NOT RECOMMEND the "MEMORY CARE/DEMENTIA" unit. Structurally, the design is very poor. Hallways lead to exit doors. Exit doors have windows either out to the garden or to the main activity area. Dementia patients are naturally drawn to activity, and they want to go where things are going on. That they can't is very upsetting to them. A good design has exit doors along the side of the hallway, and the hallway ending without an exit. Circular units are great, because the resident can safely wander but not find a way out. The carpet pattern is busy (should be a single shade, lighter, with dark boarders at the bottom of the wall) which makes it challenging for them to walk. Alzheimers and Dementia patients have visual issues and need different cues to navigate. Also they generally can't "watch" TV and prefer sound and music. The unit is small with 12 beds and up to 4 'day trippers'. They post activities each day but whether they actually happened seemed to be up to the staff if they wanted to or not. Many times the patients were parked in front of the TV and the staff went to text on their phones and talk to each other. There seems to be little training and oversight of the staff on a day to day basis, and there is getting to be some significant turnover. The staff mean well, but they clearly aren't given any kind of direction or incentive to do things with these residents, and so they don't. The breaking point for us was finding our mother completely naked in her room, no clothes anywhere nearby, incoherent and cold. Nobody could tell us how she got that way, and management just kept insisting their staff would never do that. Except they did. Please look elsewhere for Dementia or Alzheimer's Care. Understand that design matters a great deal for these vulnerable residents and good oversight of staff even more. This place is not what you need. For Assisted Living, it's great.
