As my mother's dementia progressed, it became clear that her needs were overwhelming what my father could provide and we'd need to find a different solution. One of the things we liked about Symphony Square was that they would allow my parents to live together in an assisted living apartment and have my mom "day trip" to the dementia unit. That never really worked out for a lot of reasons, some of which were in the difficulty my father had in separating from my mom, and some of which had to do with the facility's actual ability to keep my mom in the unit. She demanded to leave, and if she could not be persuaded, they had to let her leave. Licensing like this, we have learned, is more important than it's presented. This is a "personal care home with special services" and as such, if any resident wants to leave they can. No matter what their mental state. The best the staff can do is distract and persuade. So, when my mother decided to walk out and go "home" (where she grew up) on a cold Sunday night, even though they accepted responsibility for her while my Dad went out, in the end she walked out of the place undetected. Five hours later the Philadelphia police found her unharmed in a very bad section of SW Philly. Residents can also not have things like a 'geri chair' (big rolling easy chair) or rails on their bed to keep them from falling out because their licensing does not permit 'restraint'. As a result, my mother went to the ER five separate times from October - November because she fell out of her bed. Rolling easy chairs (but not wheelchairs) and bed rails are considered restraints. Ok. Here's what I'd say. Everyone who worked at Symphony Square was very nice and accommodating. The place is high-end hotel beautiful. The assisted living area was fine, with activities and decent restaurant style dining. They are very passive, in that nobody will take the initiative and actually pro-actively do something, you have to ask for them to do anything. ASSISTED LIVING is FINE. We DO NOT RECOMMEND the "MEMORY CARE/DEMENTIA" unit. Structurally, the design is very poor. Hallways lead to exit doors. Exit doors have windows either out to the garden or to the main activity area. Dementia patients are naturally drawn to activity, and they want to go where things are going on. That they can't is very upsetting to them. A good design has exit doors along the side of the hallway, and the hallway ending without an exit. Circular units are great, because the resident can safely wander but not find a way out. The carpet pattern is busy (should be a single shade, lighter, with dark boarders at the bottom of the wall) which makes it challenging for them to walk. Alzheimers and Dementia patients have visual issues and need different cues to navigate. Also they generally can't "watch" TV and prefer sound and music. The unit is small with 12 beds and up to 4 'day trippers'. They post activities each day but whether they actually happened seemed to be up to the staff if they wanted to or not. Many times the patients were parked in front of the TV and the staff went to text on their phones and talk to each other. There seems to be little training and oversight of the staff on a day to day basis, and there is getting to be some significant turnover. The staff mean well, but they clearly aren't given any kind of direction or incentive to do things with these residents, and so they don't. The breaking point for us was finding our mother completely naked in her room, no clothes anywhere nearby, incoherent and cold. Nobody could tell us how she got that way, and management just kept insisting their staff would never do that. Except they did. Please look elsewhere for Dementia or Alzheimer's Care. Understand that design matters a great deal for these vulnerable residents and good oversight of staff even more. This place is not what you need. For Assisted Living, it's great.

There are several physicians who have privileges there and if you need to go to a specialist, they provide transportation. The building is very secure, parking garage is private and their several receptionists are responsive. The memory care unit has a wonderful caring staff, very attentive to the residents needs. I have the privilege of visiting Symphony Sq a couple times a week for over several years. It is my pleasure to continue for several more.

My mother had many ailments (both physical and mental). Finding a suitable placement was difficult and our initial attempts were not pleasant. When my mother moved into Hayes things changed. Her health improved, she met new friends, and after a few weeks she informed us that our daily visits, while nice, weren't necessary. The one thing that my mother loved the most about Hayes was the staff. They treated my mother with the greatest of care and respect. From the Administrator, to the cafeteria staff, to the guard who kept her safe, Hayes was exceptional! It has been over twenty years since my mother passed away, and discovering that monument brought back great memories.

The facility is a very large building with several other apartments, it's handicap accessible and…read morehas beautiful grounds. When you walk into the large foyer there are many directions to go. The building has a great staircase and hardwood floors. Dr. Dash and friends were there to serve our seniors and have a little fun. Often many seniors that are in facilities go without visitors or a kind word outside of the staff that they see every day. Our small group tries to make a difference by visiting seniors offer them a warm home cooked meal, some gifts, games and a little one on one time with a different smiling face. Based on our interactions today for approximately four hours the staff is top notch. The staff here appears to really care about their patients they know each by their name and there seems to be warm and genuine exchanges between them. During that time there the staff were also very helpful to us and willing to work in anyway to help serve our seniors to ensure that they have a great time. Thanks Hayes House staff!!

I'm absolutely floored that they have such a Deplorable spirit greeting the phones at a NURSING HOME! So I just got off the phone with my dad's insurance carrier and got a list of nursing homes that I can transfer him to... He just had a stroke but the home he was transferred to it about an hour away from family in Philadelphia. I already understand that there might not be somebody in Administration this time of night. But I thought I might call and get the name and the number of the person I'm supposed to speak to. A woman answered the phone and I told her that my father was at another nursing home and I wanted to get some information on who to speak to to transfer him. She immediately, " OK well it's 6 o'clock at night so who do you expect to help you with that?" When I said "well could I just have the name of the person I can speak to on Monday," She immediately slammed down the phone. It happened so loudly and so abruptly that I assumed it must've been a mistake and maybe she dropped the phone. So I called back and Introduced myself again and apologized and said I understood that they were closed but I just needed the name in the extension to leave a message [Though my dad's power of attorney, it's very hard to make these calls throughout the day since I work a very busy job. It's much easier for me to call all of the homes and leave a message for administration when I'm off to get the ball rolling and have them call me back when they're available since they don't seem to be available during business hours anyway]... Anyway she immediately responded " Well this is the same girl you just spoke to... So what the hell is your point what do you want from me???" I was so disgusted I immediately just hung up the phone. I've never had anybody talk to me like that and a nursing home of all places. Aside for my dad's nursing home currently being about an hour away, another problem that I have is that the nursing home never answers the phone... And my father is now nonverbal after the stroke and can't speak at all. So it's really important for the staff at least answer the phone... I only call every other day to check on him. I don't need that much. He has a cell phone. I just checked on vitals every couple of days. I said that to say it's very important that the staff be friendly when I call. HE'S NKT EVEN THERE YET AND IM ALREADY BEING BULLIED ON THE PHONE BY EXTREME SPIRITED STAFF. I hope to God with all my spirit she doesn't make it to the new year at that company. If I was a nonverbal patient and I had to interact with someone like That for even five minutes, I would probably just give up all hope on the inside and die in my sleep. I'm absolutely disgusted. What an absolutely disgusting place. Send none of your loved ones there, I can imagine there's a abuse coming from a woman who talks to people like that... I'm still shocked she happily hung up the phone (You can see two other calls in the screenshot, because that was two times where she just answered the phone and hung up...)

I'm so glad I moved to independent living in Simpson House! We are a very interesting and…read moreinterested community. Diverse in a way few retirement homes are. Beautiful location adjacent to Fairmount Park, especially during the fall leaf show! Caring for one another is the norm here. You can have solitude in your own space, and community is just outside your door. Wide variety of activities to join, or start your own. Its easy to live here, with lots of services and supports that take care of those pesky chores I would rather not waste my time on - so I can spend my time just as I wish. Public transportation makes it easy to get around and there is van to reserve for trips that don't work on public transit if you don't have a car. And it gives me peace of mind to know that when I need a higher level of care, its just down the hall, and way better than the crap shoot you face the day you are discharged from hospital. Simpson House is a winner!

In January, my mother became a Personal Care resident at Wesley Enhanced Living at Stapeley. She…read moremoved to Stapeley from a high-end independent living facility, in large part to be closer to my husband and me. Though Stapeley is an older facility and not as fancy as the one she left, she (and we!) are finding the Stapeley community to be warmer, more welcoming and with more resident activities and higher participation levels than she experienced in her previous, far more expensive, independent living facility. Though she's only been at Stapeley a month, she has met so many interesting people from both Personal Care and Independent Living who repeatedly tell both my mother and me, "You are going to like it here!" Stapeley is clean, well-maintained and has a warm, home-like aesthetic. The Fireside dining room has very good food and a full and varied menu. Most of the staff we have encountered so far have worked at Stapeley for many years, and everyone has been kind and helpful. The nurses and on-staff doctor have been most attentive; we feel my mother is getting a high level of medical care. We feel grateful my mother has landed where she is. There is a good, happy vibe going on in Stapeley.

Being the professional that I am I did my due diligence in finding out all I could about the company to prepare for my interview. I conducted my first interview and was asked to come back and meet with the residents and some of the other managers. I completed this interview process as well. Not getting to the job is not why I am writing this. I am writing this because wesley @ Upper Moreland feels that they do not have to show any respect to those that have interviewed. After more than a week after the final interview with their residents and management staff , I received no kind of follow up email. I also reached out to the h.R department with a very nice voicemail , which was ignored. I also reached out to them via email, ignored as well. Wesley has yet to contact me with a simple paragraph just letting me know that they selected another candidate. That would be showing respect to the people that they have interview. It's so disheartening when you go through the whole interview process and the company thinks so little of the people that they interviewed that they cannot continue to communicate with them with a simple rejection email. After you run up and down the highway to satisfy their interview process and to see that the company that you wanted to work for is so unprofessional with the way that they handle their employment process. They say they equal opportunity employer, at this point , i'm going to go there , they're not. How can you be an equal opportunity employer when you can't even show respect for a person that is in need of a job. So I doubt if they respect people of a different demographic. I know that this has become a practice of jobs to ghost you instead of contacting you. Such unprofessionalism , from wesley to indulge in such a practice. I should've known as I visited the property twice in real that all of their upper staff is white there was no place for a black professional at wesley. Shame on wesley. Wesley upper moreland..... I was a peer educator and Dr. F trained us to do workshops, intervention and reach out to students at TU on the issues of drug and alcohol use. He was one of the most accessible and easy going professors that I knew. I often found myself talking to Dr. F about things I was going through because he was so easy to talk to. Respectively, I could tell he wasn't a stranger to the crazy college lifestyle (partying, relationship woes, family struggles, work balance, etc) I was living and he never made me feel "less than" or like he didn't get it. Dr. F always just got it. I think Dr. F would be a great therapist for anyone wanting to explore the role addiction serves in his or her world. If you're ready to make a change, Dr. Frank is who I would suggest.
