Just came back after smog check, very quick and friendly service, truly A+. The place opens on Saturday until 5, and Sundays too. This works for me as I don't have time during weekdays. The waiting area has limited amenities, with chairs and magazines only. So I opted to take a walk around the downtown street. read more

I want to first of all start off by saying the Encinitas Smog Center is $10 cheaper than this place (and down the street on Highway 101); if you call in and ask for a coupon or tell them you have AAA. Secondly, I think a 3 star review for my experience with A Plus is nothing more than generous. I booked an appointment mid afternoon to take me vehicle here. When I showed up the owner (Crystal) starts telling me "I told you 5pm, I told you 5pm". This was my first experience with A Plus and I clearly replied, "no, you told me 430pm". She apparently didn't want to look like an idiot on front of her other 430pm appointment. So immediately I was her 5pm appointment, no apology. I took off for a little bit, grabbed a bite to eat and came back. Upon my return I saw her handing my Porsche key to someone else, before he replied this isn't my car. I had personal items in my vehicle so this irked me a little more than usual. When I walked up, she said you failed smog. I wasn't sure if she was joking or serious. In the tone she said it, it was almost like she was homeschooled here in the United States or did not understand how to talk to someone in US. That's all she said. If you tell someone something bad, it is usually a good idea to not say it like you don't give a crap. She proceeded to help the other individual who was her 530pm appointment after giving me the bad information without elaborating on the problem. After several minutes she told me my gas cap wasn't good enough. I know a lot of people that have passed a smog when they shouldn't have, nonetheless to fail for a gas cap is perfectly function is nothing short of stupid. She was more concerned about taking my money than me passing smog or fixing my issue. She told me to come back another day and deal with it. A plus WTF (AWTF) is more like it. I am pretty sure I would never come back here. The lady ended up doing a resmog for free after I high-tailed it to an auto store and picked up the new gas cap. Since I was paying $10 more than the place down the street and she kept me waiting past another appointment in a half, I thought it was only fair. The customer service was lacking and the reason I failed smog was ridiculous. She even admitted my CO rating was that of a brand new car. I'm going to give her 3 stars because I could have been some kind of Yelp anomaly and she tried to amend the issue at the very very end. But I would be careful bringing your car here. I believe my experience here was no really no more than 2 stars. read more

Another A+ experience at A+ smog! Two years later, I came back to have my smog done. Unfortunately, there were some technical difficulties but the amazing owner promised me she would get it taken care of and make sure I got an appointment before my smog was due to the DMV. Sure enough she followed up with me every day to let me know when she would be back up and running and got me in no problem on a day that worked with my schedule. I just love her and this business! Been going there for over 7 years. Crystal, the smog tech, is polite, knowledgable, fair, and efficient. They do take appointments but you can also walk-in. No bullshit; if there's a problem, she can explain it in terms you can understand even if you're not a machine head. Drop your car off, and walk the 500yards to Raul's Shack. Get a chile relleno burrito and eat it while Crystal finished your car. All in all a great experience! read more

I have been coming here for over a decade since I got my first car at 18. I love this place and the awesome people who run it. They are so nice and always do a great job. Make an appointment because this place is a gem and they get booked. They always send a coupon in the mail and if you forget it they will just give you the coupon price - at least in my experience. Now that I'm married it's become my husband's smog place too. We drive from San Elijo and have brunch while we wait. The lady who owns the place says go have breakfast and take your time, she'll just park it for you until you get back. I just won't go anywhere else! read more

I got my smog test here and I had a great experience -- definitely recommend. I called on Saturday morning for an appointment (recommended) and she fit me in at 11am. Showed up right on time and she immediately saw me and got started on my car. She was organized and had everything ready to go and was helpful, answering most of my questions before I even asked. 2001 VW Passat -- failed the first time because neither her standalone gas analyzer nor her newer PC-based scanner could communicate with my car, which was weird, because my Ross-Tech VCDS scanner always could. I did have a flaky ABS module, but we both (incorrectly) thought she could smog it, anyway. I replaced my ABS module with a used one on eBay ($60 an about an hour of not-difficult work, instead of $1500 for dealership replacement of the whole ABS control-and-pump system), scanned to make sure it was good, and brought the car back for a (successful) free retest. The real test of a business is how it deals with customers when things go awry, and I am very pleased with Crystal and her test center. I plan to bring our other car next year, when it is due for a smog test, because she has earned my trust and my continuing patronage. Lessons learned -- if your ABS light is on, she will usually be able to smog your car, but there are exceptions, such as my experience. Also, if you have an aftermarket radio, you may want to swap in your factory unit for smog testing, because this can also interfere with a smog scan. read more

Terrible. Yes I did pass but then my car did not start. I dropped my car off, big mistake. When I went to pay they said smog passed great but then they were pushing this mechanic on site. I went to start my car, it would not start. They said my car was messed up. I knew where I stood as far as my car, it was well maintained. They plugged back the wires then my car started. This place is a hidden gem. This smog only service place was tucked away less than three blocks from the Pacific Ocean. The service was excellent and they even had an appointment available the same day. This was a hassle free and affordable experience.
