As this was our first construction project, we were filled with uneducated questions and concerns. Adam and his team were impressive, kind and patient in handling all our questions. We recently bought a house with about 1/3 of the upstairs left as unfinished attic space. Having kids, we recognized the potential of the space as a future playroom/media room. We met with several contractors to bid the job which consisted of framing, installing a new window, sheetrock, electrical, HVAC, insulation, trim, paint, etc.. We ended up selecting A.R. Lucas Construction. They were comparable in price, but as the other reviewers point out, we ultimately made the decision because Adam is just damn nice and comes across as very trustworthy. Adam and his crew were very flexible in working with me and my wife to design the space. We made some adjustment along the way and they were very accomodating. The job took a while to complete due to the challenges of permitting in Austin, but we are ecstatic with the results. Lots of additional square footage for a fraction of the market value! Adam and his main crew (Andrew, James/Jimmy/Jimmy James, and Chad) are all real solid guys - nice and honest. They do high quality work. Believe me, I'm an engineer and picky (ask my wife). They exceeded my expectations - which is not easy. AND they came in essentially on budget. We've already recommended A.R. Lucas to two of our closest friends. So far we've used Adam and crew for two jobs on our new house in the North Loop area and will definitely be calling them again in future. They do quality work, are very easy to work with and do a great job tracking and explaining budgets and costs. The first job was to replace the flooring in one room. They matched/sourced the flooring and the installed took less than a day. There were no issues and it came in within a few dollars of the very reasonable estimate. The second job was adding some cabinets to our kitchen/dining area. We didn't take advantage of their cabinetry services, as we wanted to match the existing pre-fab cabinets and granite countertops, but maybe we should have! We had planned this to be a quick-easy job, but sourcing the units brought several challenges and delays. We recently rebuilt a home in Hyde Park and, after interviewing four builders, selected AR Lucas Construction. Adam and Andrew were terrific to work with. Adam's initial quote was very detailed and professional and helped us understand exactly where costs were. As new costs came up (like the foundation that had to be completely replaced), we were able to remove other details to offset the cost. I'm an interior designer and know that unexpected issues come up on every project. This was the first time I had build an entire house so there were plenty of things big and small that didn't go according to plan. For instance, the architect's plan to put the HVAC in the attic didn't work as she hadn't left enough space. Adam worked closely with his HVAC contractor to figure out our alternatives. Throughout the process, Adam was always calm, professional, flexible and responsive. Adam and his team (including subs) refinished long leaf pine floors for us, installed beautiful custom-milled trim throughout the house, built a stone fireplace, grill and walkways, installed beautifully smooth walls, worked with our home automation vendor to install more wiring than I would have believed would fit and ensured all the finishing touches look great. We are extremely happy with the work provided by AR Lucas Construction and I would highly recommend them to others. read more

We recently bought a small, 1960's fixer upper in South Austin. With Adam's great crew, expertise, and guidance we were able to transform this simple, outdated house into our dream home. Our build consisted of constructing a 750 sq. foot addition with a living room, master bedroom and bath. In addition we modernized the kitchen and living room of the existing 900 square ft house. From the start of our project, Adam helped guide us through the process of working with a difficult set of plans , and we ended up with a plan that we were comfortable with. In fact, throughout the building process , we were highly impressed with Adam's straightforward manner and knowledgeability. When doing a project of this size, we felt it was important to be working with someone who had good judgement and that we could trust. AR Lucas went above and beyond to help us feel confident and comfortable with all the decisions we made throughout the process. The construction process itself was also very easy. The work was done at a very high level, with attention to detail and cost. Adam made many suggestions throughout the process that have ended up saving us money in the long term and have improved the quality and efficiency of our house. Adam and his crew were also very responsive to our suggestions, and were quick to make any adjustments to the work, which made us feel like we were getting our money's worth and more. Our house was built in 1965 and we bought it last year from the original owners. While the house had been well maintained, it needed lots of updating. The kitchen was almost all original and needed a large scale remodel, which we hired AR Lucas to do. Adam and team were great about providing guidance and direction and working within our budget. The workmanship was all top notch and the crew was incredibly professional. They updated our cabinets, installed a new backsplash and countertops,scraped popcorn ceilings, built out a pantry and updated electrical and plumbing, which included installing a dishwasher, that the kitchen didn't previously have. They also removed some cabinets from the kitchens original footprint (per Adam's suggestion), which opened up and modernized the space. We couldn't be happier with the result. The kitchen looks great, is highly functional and the work is high quality. The team was also able to meet our timeline, which was important to us, as we were expecting a new baby and needed to ensure that the work would be done prior to her arrival. A little caveat: reviewing a custom home builder isn't like reviewing the new tex-mex joint's queso. I've had plenty of queso in my life, but I've never built a home before. I can make comparisons between a dozen places queso, but home builders? That said, A.R. Lucas Construction -- specifically Adam and his project manager Andrew -- are awesome. If you're looking for a custom home builder, you can not go wrong with Adam and his team! My architect and I met with 3 custom builders and Adam flat out stated that he loved the design and wanted to figure out how to make things work as close to my original budget. The other 2 builders had a take-it-or-leave it approach to their bids, while Adam was willing to revise and revise and revise to see what we could make happen within my financial constraints. With Adam's help and suggestions, my architect and I scraped away enough excess to make the price tolerable. For example, we cut out some of the 9 million (give or take) windows the architect had spec'ed and Adam found different manufacturers that would help lower supply costs. The other builders I talked to had no interest in this back and forth. He worked with his contractors to push them for the best possible prices, alternative materials, and got creative on his own fees. The fact that Adam was willing to do all this -- meeting dozens of times for $0 and just a signed paper -- was beyond invaluable to a complete novice like myself. Adam had submitted no less than a half dozen revised bids to me. Construction was about as smooth as one could expect. Adam did a great job keeping the screws to his contractors; Because some of the bids were 6+ months old by the time their work was started, some prices went up.. but Adam did a great job pushing back to keep costs under control. The majority of my additional costs came from change orders when we discovered that the plan wasn't going to be optimal; I could have stayed the course on these things but we would meet and talk about whar Adam was suggesting (for example, low key LED lighting on the roof deck and not leaving the underside of the carport roof exposed) and it was basically impossible to ever argue with his rationale. I can think of a few times where Adam pulled a rabbit out of a hat and blew my mind. 1. I wanted a relatively green house. Adam immediately noticed that the plan for the stairwell wouldn't work as hoped as a thermal chimney and suggested a redesign to suck hot air up and out. 2. Still thinking green, Adam had a lead on trees that had been cut down after the Bastrop wild fires-- so he figured out a way to have my hard wood floors made from reclaimed Bastrop pine for a few thousand dollars more than traditional flooring. The floors and stairwell are the first thing everyone notices when they enter the home and it's all because of Adam being 100% engaged in the project. 3. Months into the project, Adam had his guys build a vanity for the first floor bathroom out of the dead pecan tree that had to be cut down when pouring the foundation. They saved the tree trunk, hoping to find a way to incorporate it into my house! 4. Adam roped an interior designer friend into helping confirm that the tile selections Adam and I had pulled from thin air would work. She suggested some color choices for the walls, railings, etc. Adam didn't have to do that; He could have just gone with his gut and/or let me flail around picking stuff out. Adam cared about building my house like it was going to be his house. I could go on and on and on about the positives of the work Adam and his crew did. But, just so you don't think I'm blinded by a halo above Adam's head, I can give some negatives. 1. When you've got a male architect, a male client, and a male builder, no one notices things like the master shower only having a rainfall shower head... which isn't ideal for a woman who wants to shower but not get her hair soaking wet. Oops! (Apologies to my incredibly tolerant girlfriend for this one!) 2. Adam didn't notice that the only exhaust fan in the master bathroom was in the little room with the toilet, which means cranking the window open in the shower to get the steam out. 3. We talked early on about a way to view the cost records weekly/monthly via a website, but I never saw that. If this is the most I can complain about, I'm not really complaining, right? Nothing is ever perfect and these are pretty small things to complain about! In the end, if I ever build another house, I am calling Adam and A.R. Lucas Construction immediately. I've recommended him to two coworkers already. And, anyone who wants to see what Adam built for me is always welcome to come and check it out. I've told Adam that I'll always happily be a reference for his future prospective clients. read more

While their bid wasn't the lowest we got on our small job (redoing our closet with custom cabinetry), I opted to go with A.R. Lucas Construction simply because Adam was so immediately pleasant and professional to work with. Without an ounce of skeezy salesmanship, he just seemed unusually trustworthy and patient. I'm so glad I followed my instincts: Adam and his crew exceeded our expectations every step of the way. First, knowing we wanted to begin as soon as possible, they started several days earlier than we'd originally planned. Andrew, the carpenter on our project, and Chad, the painter, were friendly, communicative, and extremely skilled. They worked quickly, yet were meticulous about every detail of the construction and finishing. They left the job site spotlessly clean every day. When I threw a curve ball design-wise (emailing Adam at midnight requesting notches in the cabinet doors rather than pulls), they reworked their plans to accommodate me. We contacted Adam when we decided it was time to give our tiny but dated kitchen an upgrade. Even though our budget was small, Adam and his crew treated us like VIP's throughout the whole process. They were always prompt and professional, kept in touch with updates throughout the project, and completed everything in the time frame they said they would. We'd wanted to rip out our existing counters and replace the old laminate, but didn't want to spend a fortune on granite counter tops. Adam researched a number of options for us and came up great ideas. His crew ended up replacing our old laminate counter tops and backsplash with new butcher block counters, a new sink and tile backsplash. The kitchen looks amazing now; the work is very high quality and will boost the resale value of the house. We managed to make the project larger for him during the construction process with some scope additions, but these were completed on time and budget as well. And the finished product, well, our addition and remodeled home make us smile at some point every day, and the craftsmanship of Adam and his team is apparent in every room. At the beginning of the project, Adam shepherded us through the all too common issues with the City of Austin during the permitting process, and his attention to detail and project management skills were apparent from the start. He consistently brought ideas throughout construction that improved the project, and did an excellent job of collaborating with the architect. He also communicated extremely well with us during the project and quickly provided solutions to issues that occur in any construction project. We lived in our house through all but a week or so of a six month project, and Adam made every extra effort to make us as comfortable as possible throughout this time. When working with a general contractor there are three things we looked for: first, can he be trusted, second is his work of high quality and, finally, can he manage to a budget. In the course or our remodel and addition to our Barton Hills home, Adam Lucas demonstrated he could do all three - with expertise and integrity. Adam's team did high quality work, where there were issues he did the right thing and always resolved them out our satisfaction, he managed a very tight budget well and finished on time. Our project was quite significant; we remodeled 90% of the original house, added 50% more square footage, had our bridge rebuilt and added a drainage system in the back. Given the scope of the project we had to move out and signed a 6 month lease in an apartment. Adam agreed to be able to get us back in the house at the end of the lease and, true to his word, we were back in the house after 6 months. Since we've moved back in we've enjoyed the new space and have been very pleased with the quality of the work of all the subs he used. Recently the A.R. Lucas Construction Company completed two remodeling projects for our home, which was built in the late 1960s. The projects involved complete renovation of two bathrooms and significant modifications to the master bedroom and two closets. This provided us with new built-in cabinets for storage, LED lighting, solid doors, fresh paint, carpeting, and ceiling fans. The bathrooms are completely tiled and have all new fixtures. The master bath now has a shower in place of a tub and sliding glass doors to separate the bath, vanity, and closet areas. We were very pleased with the results of the remodeling projects. Adam and his employees were cordial and professional throughout all of the work. The materials and fixtures used are high quality. The workmanship of Adams's employees and subcontractors was first-rate as well. We are also very pleased with the design elements of both projects. All of the remodeling work could have been done as a single project, but we were able to plan the work with Adam to update one area of the house at a time so as to avoid moving out for several weeks or months. Adam was conscientious about our budget and time frame for completion of the work. He tried hard to complete the projects efficiently and with minimal changes to the total projected costs. We were reassured during the process by being able to review Adam's detailed construction cost records at several intervals throughout each project. These records essentially provided a cost accounting of expenditures for labor and materials for each budget category in the overall cost proposal. In summary, our overall experience with A.R. Our problem began when the upstairs master shower began to leak through to downstairs. At that point we decided to redo the whole thing, literally from scratch. It is a relatively small space, so special design and construction expertise was needed. Lucas Construction had been highly recommended but we still interviewed three companies. Adam and his group easily came out on top. These folks are consummate professionals, which we figured from the start when they laid down a very tight plastic covering the length of the house that kept the floor rugs clean; it was the very last thing to be removed. Their scheduling process for different phases was efficient and always considered our well-being. The estimates were fair, very clear, and we were kept abreast of the process at every stage. The final bill was what they said it would be, and the whole accounting process was quite professional. I guess as important as anything is the quality of their work. In short, it was exemplary. They did a wonderful job; we are totally pleased with a wonderfully functional bathroom that is so pleasing to the eye. We had waited several years before taking on a major home remodel because we dreaded the process. We finally decided to take the plunge and interviewed a couple of General Contractors. The minute we met Adam, we knew we had found the right person for the job. He and his crew were professional throughout the entire process, always coming up with viable solutions for those little surprises that arise during a remodel.
