I have two Japanese steel and bronze lamps that my uncle brought back after WWII. My mother used them 60-70 years, and they were still unique and beautiful, but the harps and hardware were a mess, and the shades were tattered and mismatched. One lampshade was actually held in place by a strategically positioned Bic pen. They were both fixed correctly , quickly, and at a reasonable price. After sixty years of use, my bedroom lampshade died. The cloth separated from the wireframing. But the lamp itself was good, being of a heavy solid brass that today would cost a fortune to replace if it even could be replaced. So, the best thing to do would be to just get a new lampshade, but it seems everyone sells lamps with shades, not just the lampshade. So. what to do? Yelp to the rescue where I came up with "A Shade Better" that sells just lampshades. Upon entering A Shade Better, I was given a warm greeting. It is a very impressive clean bright-looking store with rows and rows of lampshades. But my lamp, being some sixty years old, you might say antique, had different lamp attachment fittings than the newer lamps. But the store clerk quickly solved that problem by saying we will simply make a new custom lampshade for you. Though the price was pretty staff, I said OK, and prepaid it. So great and in two weeks, I [picked up my new lampshade perfectly done in the leopard skin pattern I wanted and with a perfect attachment fit to my lamp. I was really pleased with A Shade Better and as far as I know, it is the only store in our area that specializes in lampshades. read more

I brought in an antique brass box that had belonged to my mom, and the owner made it into a gorgeous lamp and helped me to choose a perfect shade. This is a great small business specializing in beautiful lamps and lamp shades. They do have an other decorative pieces. Each is delightful and reasonably priced. I brought a lamp for switch repair. Sofia determined that the lamp worked perfectly, no repair & no charge. I offered to pay for her time. because she also disassembled the lamp base because it was a little wobbly. Sofia and her assistant were considerate, and helpful. A pleasure to work with. I would definitely go here for any lamp repair, or to purchase a new shade or anything related to lamps. A Shade Better, is a business you'd expect to find in the mix of a Design Center whether it be: New York, Paris. London, LA or San Francisco. Yet, it is a family run business in Fort Lauderdale in a simple strip center. Dad is the manufacture of custom solutions (shades) and the run of the mill lamp repair and the Mom and Daughter team seems to have leveaged their love for design and now carries a plethora of modern, craftmans, colonial, mid century and urban fabrices with designer names such as House of Gucci. After a recent move from the West Coast, I was destined to repair or replace several shades damaged during the move. As they say," lighting is everything". So I began my journey with \A Shade Better. They approch each project with a level of design and manufacturing sophistication, and a every welcome is a warm welcome. The only issue is "I have now discovered the real beauty in lighting is seen through an incredible fabric and not so much as the fixture it self. A Great Find! We looked at so many stores for a lampshade that would work with the lamp we built from a basket. After months of frustration we were told about A Shade Better. What a find... if you can find them. Blink and you just drove past them. Basically, it is a small shop full of lampshades and if one of those doesn't work for you, they'll custom create one for you!!! Months of frustration gone in two days... the time it took to have a custom shade made. And the price... no more than what we were looking at for the ready made ones. If you're looking for a lampshade, this is THE place to go. The building is a bit out of the way in a very nondescript strip area, but worth the trip. They have a huge selection, but it you want something you can't find, they'll make it for you. We had made our own lamp and looked everywhere for a shade, before we were referred here. The people who manage the store were very nice and helpful. They came up with a basket of fabric swatches and they had just the right one. In two days, my custom lampshade was done and looks great! Refused to refund due to lamp being unwrapped. It's impossible to tell if shade goes with lamp when it's all wrapped. I would have been willing to pay for the re-wrap which wouldn't come close to being completely out $70! I bought 3 lamp shades and only asked to return one. I inherited three lamps and brought them to A Shade Better for new shades. They were very helpful and I found 2 great shades in the shop and had a custom one made for a 1960s Lucite Lamp. The shades are great quality and I found the prices were not very different than what I would find at a big box store. This small and very crowded store is loaded with lampshades. We purchased four lampshades, two harps, and two finials. Two of the lampshades, the harps and the finials were fine. We brought four lamps to the store and Miriam was very helpful in finding four shades to fit the lamps. In the store we saw the shades Miriam selected for our lamps wrapped in cellophane on our lamps. Once home we removed the cellophane wrapping and two of the lampshades were too white for our cream colored lamps and adjoining couch. We immediately notified the store owner that we were returning two of the lampshades and keeping everything else. Miriam informed us that there are signs in the store saying that once the cellophane is removed there are no returns. On re-visit I saw the signs. Given that the shades were in perfect shape and we were keeping most of our purchase I thought they would be taken back or we would be charged a re-wrapping fee. However the attitude was "see the signs." Wish them well, but we will not be back. read more
