I have been buying curtains and shades from A Shade Down for over a decade, in Beverly and now Gloucester. They have great prices and always take good care of me. The owners give honest opinions, never trying to up-sell me. I've bought everything from simple window curtains to complex shades. They work to get me the best prices from their vendors on shades, letting me know if sales are coming and if I should wait, they install the products and always do a great job. I went in to look for curtains and the people here were so rude. I have NEVER seen anything like it. My son, stood on something he shouldn't have, I AS HIS MOTHER removed him and disciplined him. But NO, the old woman proceeded to YELL at my 3 yr old son. Now, she could have easily said " could you please have your son come down so he doesn't get hurt" would have been the appropriate response, but the woman and the man (the owner was the woman) wouldn't tell me who they were. I called to find out the name, and they still wouldn't tell me who I could speak to and that was when I looked them up and found out who they are. She said to me, when you pay the rent you can say something. This is one horrible establishment. When I called she proceeded to hang up on me because I couldn't understand why a company wouldn't give me a name of a supervisor. DO NOT GO HERE. The man who cuts the shades is so very nice and helpful. He takes his time and does a very fine job of getting the shades the correct size. It is so hard to find a place that still trims shades for you. Plus, there is an extensive selection of shades to meet everyone's pocketbook. read more

The woman (who I believe is the owner) is an extremely rude and disrespectful woman. I was a return customer who has purchased here several times before. I wanted to buy a panel for the door and was interested in two different panels. The woman refused to sell me the second panel because she refused to sell me something that would "probably be returned". I have never experienced having an employee refuse to sell me something that was FOR SALE (is that even legal?!). I walked out without purchasing and will never step across that threshold again. I will also advise all my family and friends to never shop at A Shade Down. She also told my sister that she would never find dusting cloths for as cheap as at her store. My sister, walked out of the store empty handed with me after the panel dispute. When she arrived home, her found her husband had just bought the same dusting cloths at a considerably cheaper price at Walgreens. read more

If you need curtains, go here. Well, if you're really into decorating and want some designer stuff, don't go here, but if you're thrifty about your home decor but want something that makes it look like you put in a little effort, then this is your stop. They've got a fairly large selection and they're all organized by length, so you just pick the aisle with the length you want and start shopping. And all of the curtains are out on display, so you're not picking them based on judgements made from the picture on the package. I just came back from here with three 54" by 63" panels for about $30. At almost every other store I looked in, like Target, JCPenney, etc., panels were about $30 each! It's a cheapskate's dream! I just finished hanging them up and they look great. Well, I think they do, but I'll wait to get a second opinion before throwing away that receipt. Now all I need is some artwork to hang up and then I can invite people over to my apartment without having to listen comments like, "Geez, Tom, it feels like a hospital room in here." read more

I have never had a problem shopping here. I own an old house with about a thousand windows in it and just about every window is covered by something I bought there. The customer service is not top notch, but the people have always been nice enough to me. They have a HUGE selection in every color and fabric imaginable. What's nice is that they are all in back so nobody is touching them or taking them out of the package. Their return policy is strict, but as long as you abide by their rules, I've never had a problem returning anything there. read more

Unbelievable prices at this establishment. I have had nothing but success with every purchase and enjoyed every bargain. They do have a decent sized selection, but I have never been able to find anything that I like in there. Most of their selection is just outdated and cheap looking. Their return policy is also bad- 7 days! So I had to rush to put the curtains up to decide if they would work or not, and then get their awful attitude when i return them with the receipt. I agree with the previous reviewer about the rudeness of the staff. I have also encountered the woman and man who run this store. They both have treated me rudely on the few occassions that I've been in there, although I found the woman to be much worse. They do not greet you, they just stare at you. They have a way of making you feel like you are bothering them when you ask for help. Honestly I have no idea how they have stayed in business so long. All in all, I say that if you are on a tight budget, are easy to please, and don't care about friendliness of the staff, this place would probably be just fine. I was nine months pregnant and we purchased six curtains for our windows (don't know how that became a priority then, but I blame nesting...) When we got home that evening, we realized that they had charged us for eight curtains when we had only purchased six. We called the next morning to let them know of the error and they refused to believe us. Alright, not great but still reasonable in a world with crappy customer service where everyone is a suspect. My husband asks them if they could check the inventory to see if there is a two curtain discrepancy and they find that there are two extra of the curtains we purchased. Bingo! Nope. They still treat my husband as a prime suspect when they have made the error and refuse to give him the refund until he can personally return to the store yet again (third time with callbacks and visits) with a code word to give the cashier for the credit no less. (Seriously!) I'm talking about serious horrible customer service here. I gave birth and so we didn't get back to get our credit applied to our card for a week (which is pretty darn good when you have just increased by one whole human being.) They actually gave my husband another difficult time where he actually got red it the face with the exertion of dealing with these awful people (and he doesn't ever lose his temper!) If you can find curtains anywhere else, please do so, as not to support this kind of humanity in the world. Even if they have great prices, surly customer service, incompetence, and poor business sense should not be rewarded. read more

Absolutely DO NOT SHOP HERE!! Horrible experience twice. I went here when my children were younger and remembered them speaking to them rudely and hadn't gone back for a few years. The other day I went with my two children and as soon as we walked in the door the man said that there was no eating allowed in the store but no sign anywhere. The kids sat down on the shelf under the curtains and the lady asked them very rudely not to and as I was asking my daughter for her opinion on curtains she touched them and the lady asked her to stop touching as she may poke a hole in it. When I asked the woman for suggestions she kept telling me which curtains were ugly. I thought to myself , why do you have them for sale if they are ugly? After making my decision on two valances and a runner I asked the man the return policy which he stated 7 days and just make sure you have the cardboard from the curtians and the packaging. Once I got home and tried them all I didn't like any and 2 days later went to return them. They took back the curtains and told me they would not take back the runner. There is no policy printed on the receipt and they told me that the runner was not in the original wrapping. Obviously I had to open it in order to see if I liked it on my floor. She told me that I should have cut a neat circle out of the end so I could reseal it if I didn't want it. They stated that they could not resell it. Noone would chose not to buy something if it isn't wrapped. I had the 2 days in my favor, the receipt, the man remembered stating the return policy to me and told me to go and get the barcode if I had it. I went home and found the barcode and went back with it and the woman stood there on the computer telling me that she would not talk to me and was not giving back my money. Her shift was over in 5 minutes and she didn't have time to deal with me. She would not call the man or go get him and that I could stand there and wait until he got back. She was again very rude to my children and when we got there they asked me if we really needed to go in there. After her being so rude and uncooperative I had had enough and called the police on her. They came and said they couldn't do anything except ask her to refund me my money. She refused to the officer unless I came back with the runner looking exactly like the ones in the bin. The only way to do that would be to have access to a shrink wrap machine. As a customer how I am supposed to know when I purchase it that they have no way to wrap it back up. So many other stores you shop at do not have carpets shrink wrapped. So, she didn't take it back and the officer was wonderful and apologized to the kids for her that she was wrong and the carpet is in the trash. Absolutely stay away!!!!! read more
