My coworker, whose wedding we attended, blocked rooms out at the Holiday Inn on Midlothian Turnpike near Johnston-Willis Hospital just a few minutes away. The home dates back to the mid to late 1800s with a barn nearby. The wedding we attended yesterday had the ceremony in the barn. It was truly a special place with light filtering in through cracks in the wood. After the ceremony the guests made their way over to the reception area on the far side of the house. A tent connects with the house, allowing guests to travel back and forth under cover, which was important yesterday as there was a bit of rain. There are beautiful grounds including a gazebo and a fire pit. The staff was very attentive and the food was great. There were about 190 people at this wedding and it never felt crowded. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a wedding venue.

We could not view the wedding ceremony because their wedding venue is in the top of a barn with wooden steps as the only access. No elevator! We waited in the reception tent instead. During the reception, my wife needed to go to the rest room. We discovered that there is no wheelchair access to the house where the restrooms are and the restrooms themselves will not accommodate a wheelchair. We had to carry my wife up the stairs to the bathroom. When I asked the owner if he'd consider putting in a wheelchair ramp, he copped an attitude and said "Ain't gonna happen", "It's never been a problem until now." If you have anyone in your family with functional needs or are elderly and need wheelchairs or walkers, I'd AVOID this place since the owner doesn't see the need to meet ADA compliance standards. UPDATE - They now have wheelchair access to the main house.

The bathrooms were also nicely decorated and everything just looked brand new and well maintained. It's a large space with a foyer at the front that was being used for food. I loved how the food was separate from the event so the caterers could do their thing and not disturb the event. The venue is also equipped with AV which was useful during the event. This is a really great event venue and I'd recommend it for folks looking for a modern space to host their next event.

I recently visited Dover Hall for the first time for a company party and I was blown away both by…read morethe opulence of the interior and the professionalism of the staff. For a 32,000+ square foot mansion (that was originally built as a single family private home) the space is immaculately and meticulously clean and maintained to the highest standard. I did not see a single speck of dust, no cobwebs on the soaring ceilings, or stain on any upholstery. The mansion also did not feel austere or cavernous despite its size; on the contrary, it is absolutely bursting with some of the most beautiful, unique, and at times strange but wonderful decor. For example, the game room has both billiards as well as an extensive and exotic big game taxidermy collection, whereas the adjacent two-story library boasts a hand carved fireplace and a spiral wrought iron staircase. I spent most of my evening exploring every room and trying to take in as much as possible. The multitude of staff who serviced our event were both warm in their interactions as well as discreet when necessary. The in-house catering was also very good. We had a tortellini station, a raw bar, breads and spreads, as well as passed hors d'oeuvres and a dessert station, and I enjoyed everything I tried. My only regret is that Dover Hall doesn't seem to do open house hours or guided tours, because I would love to be able to return and see more of this remarkable building.

On the day of our wedding, our hope was to follow the timeline we had carefully planned so that we could maximize time with our guests. Although our coordinator reassured us things were on track, the buffet ended up starting later than expected. Because of that delay, our reception ended with much less dancing time than we had envisioned. We had chosen a buffet in part because we were told it would be quicker than a plated dinner, but that unfortunately wasn't the case. We share this not to take away from how beautiful and memorable our day was, but because we believe The Mill has all the ingredients to deliver a truly seamless experience. The property appeared to be having the grass cut that day, but there were no signs or parking instructions posted. Multiple vehicles were parked on the grass, and several cars, including mine, ended up blocked in. Instead of handling the situation professionally, Tabitha walked around the pool yelling for the driver of a white Toyota Camry. I drive a white Toyota Corolla, so I didn't think she was referring to my vehicle. She continued calling out "Camry" for several minutes before eventually shouting the license plate number and saying the vehicle would be towed. That's when I realized she was actually talking about my car. I calmly explained that the confusion was caused by her repeatedly identifying the wrong make of vehicle. Rather than acknowledging the misunderstanding, she was rude and dismissive. She told me that if I didn't agree with her, I could leave the pool. Mistakes happen, but the way this situation was handled was completely unprofessional. A simple correction or apology would have resolved the issue. Instead, I was met with poor customer service and an unnecessarily hostile attitude. I hope Sunset Cove addresses how situations like this are handled in the future and expects a higher standard of professionalism from its management.
