This review is about my experience a few years ago. I've always felt I should do one, but my experience was so upsetting that I didn't want to think about it. As it's an older story, things may have changed since this happened. As an adult learner who was never around cars (that's NYC for you!), learning to drive was going to be difficult. A Woman's Way was the only school which advertised they help nervous learners, so I signed up. Getting there was a long journey every week. Classes were just under $100 each. The first time I went out with Myra, she was understanding and explained basics. I felt like I could do this and learn! The second class is where things changed. Everything from week one was contradicted. This continued every week. If I asked questions, I never got answers. There was almost an incredulous response when I'd ask questions. If I commented on something I saw, she'd tell me to keep my eyes on the road. If I made a joke, she didn't get it and would get very serious telling me to explain it to her. Sometimes she was just judgmental about anything mentioned. I'd be told a rule of the road, then the next week would be told that rule never existed and where on earth did I get that from? When we'd get to an intersection, she'd tell me to watch for wheels (since they have the patent on the Fuchs Formula) rather than telling me that I should be looking for cars. I never even knew what I was meant to be looking for with wheels thing until I looked it up. She was a stickler for how the brakes were pressed, as being gentle saved wear and tear. She said she was praised for having the best brakes at the high school she also taught at, but all I could take in was how upset she got at me if I accidentally wasn't gentle. We did the exact same things each week, and the contradictions and lack of answers kept rolling in. I was told I had bad eye coordination, and I needed to play video games to fix that. I asked about driving games, and she said no, not those, any other video games (?). I told her if I had bad hand/eye coordination, I'd not be able to do my job. As you can guess, this coordination problem doesn't exist. The craziest part is that when we were first going out, I was going around 20 MPH on local streets, sometimes 25 depending on the signs. She acted like I was a speed demon and told me to slow down. I ended up going 10 MPH, and she told me that was much better. That's the speed we did every other lesson at. During my last lesson, a car went around me where he shouldn't have, and I said I couldn't believe he did that. She seemed annoyed at me and told me of course he did, because I was going too slow!!! SHE WAS THE TEACHER, remember, if 10MPH was no longer what she wanted me to do, she should have said months before. When I went faster, she told me that was much better. This was insanity!!! When I first signed up, they told me they do two classes that I had to take ASAP. One was the class all new drivers have to take. Those classes are only good for a year before you get a license. They said the other was a general driving class they offered to help new drivers. The first class was as expected, but before the second started, a lot of older drivers who didn't seem like students started coming in. They started talking about traffic....what was this? Turns out it was an insurance points reduction class! WHY was I in this?? Why was I lied to about what it was? Why don't they tell you they force you to take an unnecessary insurance points reduction class so early on in your learning? I was MISERABLE. I would start dreading my lesson day 5 days before. I felt sick from it. I couldn't keep doing this, and my self-confidence was in the toilet, but I also needed to learn to drive. Then Myra accidentally said exactly what I needed to hear to put a stop to this madness. She was talking about other students, and mentioned having recently seen a girl she'd taught for 5 YEARS who still had no license and still couldn't drive. She was incredulous that the girl thought something about cars that wasn't true (something I also thought as I was also a newbie). That's where I woke up - this girl had been with her for years and could barely drive. YEARS. That would be me if I didn't put an end to this. She wasn't teaching me to drive, she was keeping me confused and fearful at $100 a lesson. It took about a year for me to go to another school as I was now beyond terrified of driving lessons. I ended up with a local driving school. Not amazing, as most aren't in NYC, but I got my license. If I stayed with A Woman's Way, I'd never have gotten it. Many reviews are good, some are by parents saying they're good. One girl had an experience like mine. Are we the only ones? I don't know. I just know this was a horrific experience that still makes me shudder to think about. read more

Myra and Lynn are FANTASTIC! We had our daughter go through a paid driving course with a school and realized that she wasn't getting the kind of driving lessons she needs to be a confident and observant driver. I reached out to Lynn and immediately got my daughter started- a few times a week for a few weeks. Within the first lesson, my daughter said how confident she felt. That's what our kids need. The ladies are so kind, humble and will talk to you about your child's driving and offer suggestions and will take feedback to work with your child. They go out of their way to accommodate your schedule and best of all- they pick you up and drop you back home. And yes- my daughter passed on her first try and is now a license holder. We will continue to use their services to boost confidence and continue driving with precision and experience. I passed!!! I took lessons for about 3-6 months weekly because I wanted to make sure I was comfortable driving, not just pass the test. It's 1 1/2 hour lessons so you really get to drive and not feel rushed in your time with the instructor. Myra is wonderful and very patient. Myra was my instructor. I've had a few in the past and she is by far the best. WORTH the money! I had three classes with her and I passed my test. My biggest fear was the parallel parking, but thanks to her technique of teaching, I was able to ace the test. If I can pass it anyone can! I'm a very tense, antsy person by nature and I was able to build confidence in myself after taking classes with Myra. I was terrified of driving ever since I got my permit 5 years ago, and something told me to push myself to just get over it. I called A Woman's Way Driving School, greeted by one of the friendliest representatives I've ever talked to (Lynn). I signed up for several driving lessons over 4 months, the 6-hour course, and the pre-licensing coarse with Myra. Not only is it just always a good idea to support a small business operated by two women, but the lessons become more personal and adapt to your specific needs and diffusing your fears/anxieties needed to become a good driver. All of the advice was specific to me as an individual, not me as just another person who wants to get their license. You couldn't ask for a nicer instructor than Myra who teaches you everything you have to know about driving.
