I first brought my dog to A1 in November and was very pleased with the service she and I had received. I was able to drop her off before work and pick her up on my lunch break with no problems. There was an interesting man there in the morning when I dropped her off and it smelled like cigarettes in the house, which I was not fond of, but I was being accommodated by being allowed to drop my dog off before hours so I didn't put too much thought into that aspect. Although I had an uneasy feeling at first impression, when I had returned at lunch to get her the place was full of dogs, which was a good sign to me knowing other people also brought their loved dogs there, and Barbara, the Owner was very friendly. This visit was a satisfactory over all. In March before going on vacation I wanted to get my dog washed and have her hair cut so she was clean and ready for the house sitters. I called and made an apt and had made arrangements to bring her in before work again, like I had done previously, I did this a week in advance. So on the day of her apt I go to drop her off and I knock on the door several times to no response. I called Barbara, she tells me she is on her way to LA for an unplanned court appearance and she says she will try to contact the employee who was supposed to be there and will call me back. When she does she apologizes that she cannot get a hold of the employee and I am welcome to bring my dog back when the shop opened, which was at 9 am, she also assured me she would be back in the afternoon if I wanted to drop her off on my lunch. So I go to work and have to take my dog with me. I waited until 10:15 to go back to drop off my dog (giving them time to open and get ready), and I knock on the door again several times to no response. I see a man in his car with 2 dogs and I ask him if he too was waiting for the shop to open and he confirmed he was, his wife had made 10 am appointments for their dogs. So I called Barbara again to let her know that the shop was still closed and that she had other clients waiting and I have now made 2 attempts to drop my dog off I was just going to have to reschedule after I returned from my trip. She again apologized and told me she had a mentally unstable person in the shop and they had to be removed before anyone could open the shop, could this be the man I met on my first visit? Possibly. In April I made another apt at 12 on a Saturday this time, so I would not jeopardize missing work or being late. I reminded Barbara I was the same client who had made 2 attempts previously, and she apologized. I do understand things happen and it was out of her control, that is why I still decided to come back, my first experience was great. On Saturday I dropped my dog off at a quarter to 12 and was told it would be 3-4 hours for her to be finished, I told her I had an event at 4 and asked if I could pick up my dog at 3:30 and she said that would work. At 3:20 Barbara called me and said she was trying to go as fast as she could but it wouldn't be until 4 that she was finished, I was ok with that. I waited to leave the house until 4 just in case she still needed time and I was right, I arrived at 4:15 and she was just finishing up with my dog. Although I had expected to pay full price, I was still surprised that there was no kind of offer to rectify the previous experience. While driving home I noticed an brownish color on the black leather seat my dog was sitting on and I wondered what it was, when we got out of the car I could see that her back paw was bleeding and she had been cut. The hair between her toes was not completely trimmed, but yet somehow she had been cut. She also had an obvious line across her neck where her hair cut was not blended from her head to her neck and she looked like she had a dumb and dumber hair cut :( Needless to say after my second and third visit to A1 Laundromutt, I do not expect to be returning. It seems that "things happen" too often here and I do not want my dog who I care very much about, to be the one who suffers from the service, it was ok for me to deal with but not fair for her. read more

This business has had several locations, as you can see by the other business' with the same name, and at various locations. All the same owner, Barbara, and this is her latest (and LAST) location, so you won't find her at the others. We recently took our 8 month old Shih Tzu for her first grooming. To say this dog is timid is a huge understatement, which is why it has taken us so long to have her visit a groomer. Immediately after meeting Barbara, and Brandy, our dog was put at ease. These ladies really love the dogs they groom. Our dog was given just the right amount of attention, and treated gently yet firmly, in the hands of these two skilled ladies. In my opinion, Barb and the crew at A1 Laundromutt exceed expectations. I was visiting Santa Barbara and had my puppy with me. During my first encounter with A1 Laundromutt, I had spent the day at the beach with my puppy, so he smelled like the ocean. Anyway, I only asked for a bath. Upon picking him up, Barb retuned my puppy to me smelling wonderful and had also checked his hygiene and clipped his nails. Talk about getting more for your money! As I mentioned, I was visiting Santa Barbara. At the last minute, my dog sitter did not show up, leaving me stranded with the puppy, and the hotel had a policy that dogs could not be left alone. Moreover, because my puppy was intact (for medical reasons, not for breeding), it was hard to find a doggy daycare that would accept him. Barb and the crew at A1 Laundromutt saved us, taking him in during the day while I was busy for daycare. Every time I picked him up, I could see the crew grooming while still being vigilant over the daycare puppies. Moreover, upon checking out, Barb stopped work and took her time talking to me about how my puppy was that day. She even showed me how to teach him to be gentle around human faces using her face as a demo. Moreover, I had asked A1 Laundromutt if they could drop my puppy off to me at the hotel a couple of times, which they graciously did. Upon drop-off, Barb told me that they had walked him and that he may not do his business because he had already done so with them. Again, talk about exceeding expectations! Many doggy daycares charge extra to walk dogs. Clearly, Barb and her crew care more about the puppies than about nickel and dime-ing clients. I know I will be back in Santa Barbara again this year and will be sure to have them take care of my puppy again in daycare. Randomly, I also found out that Barb knows how handstripping. Not many groomers do or know how to do it properly. While I have not had her handstrip my puppy, I will be sure to ask her to do it the next time I visit, especially since my current groomer once gave my Airedale puppy a Schnauzer strip. read more

Really weird vibe right off the bat. The two ladies that were there seemed to be very stressed and under extreme duress. The were running around like they were chickens with their heads cut off. Grabbing index cards to take my information down etc. Why would they need my information again if I had already given my name & dog names over the phone to make the appointment? It was almost as if they were overwhelmed with the amount of dogs they had in this little box of a room. Or maybe they weren't prepared for me for my appointment, or maybe really didn't work there and were helping the owner out since she wasn't there.. who knows why I left my dogs with them. I have a 3 lb teacup Yorkie and 4 lb teacup Maltese both very little. They didn't ask for vaccinations which is no big deal because my dogs are vaccinated but all they had in that room were big male dogs. They were all hovering over and stepping on my little dogs. They wouldn't let them be, humping them and the other dogs that were there, I'm surprised the ladies didn't trip over them. Finally one of the ladies saw my dogs begin hassled and being humped on by these big dogs and put them both on the table. She said "Sorry about these dogs are not fixed the owner didn't fix them for some reason". As I walked away I got one of those feeling ..... my husband and I looked at each other and gave each other the "should we go back and take them out of that place?" look, but I figured it would be okay, even though I couldn't enjoy my day because I was worried about them while I wasn't there. I dropped them off at 2:30 and they were done & ready about 5:30pm. When we got there they still were not ready, the owner was there this time along with 1 of her assistants. My Maltese wasn't linked to the grooming table by her collar and jumped off (not landing correctly) because she was scared. It was no big deal, she jumped off herself and they apologized over and over which I appreciated but she could've broken something. Meanwhile another dog was literally jumping over and over and over trying to get to my Maltese right next to the lady using the scissors, she was constantly looking back and telling the dogs to stop not looking at where the sharp end of her scissors was going into my dog. It just didn't seem safe at all. $120 for both dogs is a lot of $ for an experience like this but I won't be coming back. read more

I have brought my 2 dogs here for several years and was usually satisfied with the haircuts and baths. But after a few major incidents and an overall feeling that I'm supporting an overpriced, hectic, and disorganized shop, I'm afraid I won't be going back. The last straw was finding out when I picked up my dog that he had gotten loose and was out in the street, and they didn't realize it until another customer came in and told them!! They had been warned the very same day when I dropped him off, so they should have known he needed to be watched or tied up. To add injury to insult, they did a fairly poor job and even cut my dog, which he's still recovering from. And what business charges a dollar if you use credit cards? But the employees here are very sweet, comforting, and gentle with my sensitive shihtzu rescue, even though he can be difficult. He always comes back looking great. Just picked up a little poodle guy running in a neighborhood. Thank God he had a phone number on his tag. Called the owners and they said they had bored their dog here at A-1. She then tried to call A-1 to let Barbara know that I had the dog and got an answering machine. Barbara called her and came and came to get the dog. I would not have let the dog return to her..but I was a complete stranger. Barbara told me she called the owner (she was really returning a call) and that she just saw the dog 1/2 ago. Barbara and her staff really like the dogs and do a very thorough and professional job, covering all the services. Leigh, I don't know any grooming shops that ask for proof of shots other than Petco. Our little rescue had some behavioral issues, and normally a groomer wouldn't want to deal with it, but Barbara and Heather have been the sweetest angels ever to our scared little pup. Wow not quite sure how this place has 5 star reviews. Recently took my dog to this dog groomer based of these yelp reviews. Couldn't have been more displeased. Brought my dog in for a "trim" and left with a fully sheared animal. A little background I have a medium sized dog who HAD a beautiful coat of long hair. When I asked why he wasn't trimmed, I was told that she attempted to do so however "it didn't look right." Any dog groomer who doesn't know how to properly trim a long haired dog probably shouldn't be in business. To top it off, the shearing was completely uneven. He has patches of hair that are of different lengths than the rest. His tail is poofy, his whiskers were shaved. There was a complete lack of attention to detail. This haircut would have been akin to me going into the barber with long hair and leaving with a buzz cutt. A terrible buzz cut at that! Needless to say I won't be going back. read more

I took my little Shih Tzu mix in to A1 Laundromutt because I had heard about Barbara's shop through a neighbor, and had been to several different groomers here in Santa Barbara, none of which I was 100% happy with, so I wanted to try A1 out. Not only are the grooming rates reasonable at A1,but the CUSTOMER SERVICE IS OUTSTANDING!! They took my little guy in and were so gentle and loving with him, and Barbara(the owner)took about a half an hour to discuss with me a physical issue my dog has. She really took the time to try and and help me figure out options to deal with it. She also only charged me $5. to do my dog's nails, which most groomers in this town will charge at least 10. or more. She has a great way with dogs....very much of a "personal touch", which I really liked for my little guy since it put him at ease! I would highly recommend A1 to anyone and everyone for dog grooming!! read more
