Although I've never adopted an animal from AAR, I feel I have a pretty valid complaint. My cat went missing and I called the local shelters to see if she was recovered/surrendered to them and they insisted I keep checking their page for "available pets." I reminded them I'm not looking to adopt an animal, merely check if mine had wound up in their care. The woman on the line literally scoffed and said they adopt out all of their eligible pets as soon as possible, and that I'd need to monitor the website. I informed her the cat was chipped & had been flagged as missing (in addition to all the other flyers, posts, etc).... and asked why they wouldn't attempt to contact the appropriate owners?! This woman said "Look, we can't call them all." So please, if you choose to adopt from this establishment, please check for a microchip. *Attached is a photo of my missing cat, Merlot. Please keep an eye out for her. She is approx. 7lbs, has a few small white patches, spayed, and is very sweet. read more

I volunteer here and the people here are extremely friendly. All of the dogs are extremely well cared for and regarding another review, no the dogs are not kept in outdoor cages full time or during bad weather, only during the day when they are waiting on their play time . I 100% recommend volunteering here, it has become something I look forward to and want to do often. Your safety is prioritized and all of the dogs are well behaved and most if not all of the dogs at least know how to sit. I've never met anyone here that is even the slightest bit rude, not to mention the place is incredibly clean and well kept! (Here's some pictures of the amazing dogs at AAR!) read more

My son came in to adopt a cat. This place is very clean (VERY clean!), the staff was welcoming, helpful and friendly. We were allowed to take the kitten he chose for adoption into a room to get to know her a little. The process was very smooth, the person checking us out was knowledgeable and very helpful. We have visited many shelters in Houston but none like AAR. We were a bit concerned with the idea of not being able to see all of the dogs at one time but quickly understand why. The staff members really want the best for their animals and make sure that adopters are genuine and can take the very best care of their animals. I got my elderly dad and dog here about 2 years ago and he loves her! However, my adult autistic daughter and her caregiver applied to volunteer and were accepted. Then they were told no in a very rude email. This is heart breaking. My daughter is very calm and would be totally supervised at all times. It would have given her something to do besides sit at home all day. She likes dogs and would have enjoyed it. It takes time for people with autism to build up a tolerance for new things. Your organization should not just be about helping animals. read more

What a wonderful experience! We had been to a number of rescue places all over Houston when we found Abandoned Animal Rescue. The people were so kind and we adopted Rivers(now Bentley). He is the sweetest boy we could imagine. We are blessed to have him and the cost was minimal compared to other places. They gave us sample meds to go as well as a new leash and collar. I was blown away by how kind everyone at AAR was. It's obvious these volunteers care deeply for each and every animal that comes through their doors and I felt they were truly happy for me when I adopted my fur baby, Theo (now Teddy!). My dad and I walked in and we were greeted by a friendly young lady at the front that was super welcoming. The other woman at the front.. not so much. My dad tried joking to relieve tension.. straight face and overall felt weird in her presence. I wanted to meet a pup that I saw on their website. I have never adopted before so was unaware of the process. We were close to this AAR and decided to come here on a whim. On the way to meet the pup I noticed there were dogs caged outside... was hoping this is not where they stayed when the weather is extremely cold or hot.. After meeting the pup, I found out her back story and that she has been there for 6 months. The woman who introduced us told us more about her background... said she was very close to another dog that had been recently adopted. She said that she tends to try to get out and needed to have a safe enclosed area to rome.. I immediately said I was worried about this and she tried to change the story by saying that the dog didn't do this anymore and that she is a lot better ever since her partner in crime was adopted. She unfortunately was not a friendly dog and was very untrusting. She said that was the first time they ever saw her like this but have a feeling that this is not the case. Seems like a lot of covering up for the dogs here.. the dog I met was beautiful and thought to myself it was strange no one had adopted her. I know why now. Her personality is untrusting to anyone she has never seen and very on edge.. Understandable but this should be told to anyone interested in the dog you're adopting. Just felt very uneasy here... I didnt get a good feeling. Everyone is different and may have had a different experience at another time.. I personally would not come back. read more

The BEST shelter I've ever visited. Clean, widespread and animal's shown love and caring from every person. This is a volunteer run shelter supported by donations. Good service most all the time. They ask a lot of questions because they want to make sure the dog is a good fit for the family. They disseminated good information but didn't know about the shedding of labs. The dog was easily trained, eager to please, sweet and very lovable. read more

I am a huge fan and supporter of their clinic services. Low cost vaccinations, spay and neuter, microchip, heart worm and parasite testing and treatments. They have done a fantastic job every time I have had occasion to use their services. If you are willing and able to adopt a full time (indoor) family member, there are always a wide selection of friendly faces waiting to meet you! :D The rescue is literally always full to capacity. They can always use more volunteers and approved foster homes. They rarely have the space to accept in your unwanted pet or found stray. These are facts of the current animal crisis in the greater Houston area, and there is no shortcoming on the part of AAR. read more

We visited a few times to take a look at some dogs that were available. They go out of their way to make sure the animals find compatible companions. We didn't end up finding a dog whose personality worked for us, but we had consistently great interactions with the people and animals we did meet. read more

These people care about their animals. The dogs get good vet care and enrichment. The volunteers know the dogs and want them to go to the right home, not just any home. This is the first place I go to find dogs appropriate for the service dogs I train or for companion dogs for veterans. read more

I went to Abandoned Animal Rescue a few days ago. First, they asked me to fill out some paperwork. After the paperwork, they gave me a catalog of dogs for my children to look through. They were so excited to see the animals! Very quickly, both of my children found a dog that looked nice. The lady there brought the dog out for us to see. My kids were playing with the dog, and everyone was happy. Suddenly, the woman notices on my form that any dog we will be adopting will be an outside dog. She informs me that information precluded me from adopting a dog. They will not allow you to take a dog if you are going to keep it outside. I live on 4 acres of land with plenty of space and a fenced area (about half an acre fenced). My kids are extremely gentle and loving. This dog was denied a wonderful loving home, and my kids were denied the dog that they wanted.... all because I intend to keep a dog outdoors. I guess I misunderstood the point of an "animal rescue". The woman promptly took the leash and led the dog back to its cage. A few tips here AAR: 1. Good people adopting pets from rescue places should not be precluded from adopting animals because they want to keep them outdoors. What an insane thing to do! Definitely NOT in the best interest of the animal. I mean, do you get govt subsidies based on how many pets you hold?.... cause you seem to like to hold them... in cages.... 2. If you are going to deny dogs to good families based on the information on the form, LOOK AT THE FORM BEFORE BRINGING A DOG TO EXCITED CHILDREN! I am truly saddened by this. I spoke with another shelter later that day that has the same policy. What a horrible, counterproductive trend at the expense of the animals. At least in our case, this was certainly a loss all around. The dog missed out on a loving family and a happy life and we missed out on a nice dog. read more

I can not say enough nice things about the volunteers at AAR. They are amazing people who do amazing things for these wonderful animals who may not have such a great ending to life without them. We adopted our dog through AAR and could not have been happier with the experience. We were very well taken care of and so was our new family member. I can't enough good things about this shelter. They are NON KILL first of all and they advocate so hard for dogs that have been there longer than normal. They enroll their dogs in the dream dog program and they crate train the dogs. We adopted a dog in July and she has not had one accident in the house. She was a little shy at first and scared of men and Karen was so nice in answer our emails back so quickly. They even told us to come back and they will help us find the right kind of dog when we adopt a second one. Please consider adopting here or donating money. They are the good people that just want to help animals. They have several volunteers that help. Even volunteers checked on the dogs during Hurricane Harvey. The people that work at AAR are absolutely exceptional. It is evident in everything they do that they truly care deeply about the animals and their owners. I took my 4 cats in for routine checkups and vaccinations, and Dr. King was phenomenal. He provided excellent service to my kitties and answered every single question I had! He was very knowledgeable, patient, and kind. The receptionist and vet tech on staff were amazing as well. I don't think I've ever been anywhere that has as much of a welcoming environment as AAR. Over a year ago I adopted a wonderful little dog from this shelter. She is my constant companion, along with my other older rescue. She had obviously been well cared for during her stay with them though she had originally been found as a stray and had some health issues. Do go here if you have a place in your heart and home for a pet. Throughout many rears nearly all my pets have been rescues. Many have had minor behavior issues that have been resolved with love and patience and each one has become a perfect pet and a valued member of my family.
