She had a huge smile, gave me a sample of their signature caramel, and gave me a run through of Abbott's history. The caramel was amazing!!!! It's so creamy and smooth and melts in your mouth without sticking horribly to your teeth. I left with a bag that didn't last to long in the house. Abbott's Also Candy Store is an offshoot of the original Hagerstown, Indiana-based Abbott's Candy Store started by W.C. Abbott around the turn of the 20th century. For years, Abbott's factory actually existed in Abbott's own backyard - actually until 1985! In 1993, Jay & Lynn Noel opened this location in a strip center on the Northeast side of Indianapolis that almost appears to be an afterthought when you look at it. They would eventually open two other Central Indiana locations and, in fact, they purchased all of Abbott's in 2012 with hopes that they can turn Abbott's into a nationally recognized brand. This particular location looks practically the same it did in the mid-90's. It's a modestly sized location in a strip center that has appropriate curb cuts and accessible parking for those of us with a disability. The entryway offers one glass door that is relatively easy to open/close. I'm actually rather surprised I've never reviewed this Abbott's, which used to be a regular stomping ground for me when Barnes & Noble was in this strip and for the few months I worked there. The staff is always friendly and helpful without ever being pushy. The prices range from incredibly affordable to higher-end. Their caramels are epic, definitely one of the candies for which they are most known, and they also offer sugar free products. They also offer chocolates, fudge, truffles, and brittle. Abbott's has always been Indiana owned and it continues to be. I love that even when it was sold it continued to be a Hoosier business. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd likely go for the fudge. However, the sea salt caramels are also pretty awesome. You really can't go wrong here. Abbott's Candies can also be obtained at multiple locations throughout Indiana and is, of course, still also located in the delightful town of Hagerstown. I served as interim pastor of a church in Hagerstown for 18 months and fell in love with the community. The Hagerstown spot is a little less wheelchair friendly. Fresh Thyme also carries the products and Abbott's has expanded into some retail spots in Ohio. While the pandemic has certainly slowed down business in a retail strip that already tends to be a bit slow, this would be a great place to stop if you're at the nearby Chick-fil-A or The District Tap. They are not a dine-in type of place, so it's relatively easy to avoid a crowd, support an Indiana business, and get your candy carry-out! read more

Been to the Chick-fil-a in this plaza so many times but never noticed this store. Upon walking in you're met by the homey feel of the store, you know there's history behind it. The sales woman gave us a brief history of the business and let us know there were samples of their signature caramels. I'm not a fan of caramel but these were soft and not overly sweet. There are lots of other candies (hard candies, chocolates, fudge, etc) but you should definitely give the caramels a try. The sales woman said this shop is one of the original shops that opened in this plaza and has been around for 26 years (I think she said). Next time I might try the chocolates. read more

This store has been at this location for over 20 years, walking in I was immediately greeted and felt welcome. The store doesn't smell overly sweet like more fake candy shops which I appreciate. In addition to the immediate hospitality, there was a free sample of their classic caramel. Apparently this is what they are known for and oh does the flavor back that up! The store is nice simple and clean, which finding those caramel chews was easy. I ended up getting the classic caramel with nuts, delicious!!! Who is going to say "no" to a yummy free sample of the freshest made delicious soft caramels!! To add to the whole experience is the consistent friendly people greeting everyone who walks through the door. We stopped in after lunch to purchase one piece of chocolate decadence to satisfy that sweet tooth craving, and ended up taking a few more pieces home. I would recommend Abbot's as a special treat to yourself if you are driving by, or as a good stop to pick up a gift for the sweethearts in your life. You can buy individually or in packages. I bought just a few and had one on my way back to the car. Amazing! The Carmel! Go for the camel! This place has been here for 20+ years and there's a reason for it. They have everything from Carmel, fudge, chocolates, etc. the decor is a bit out dated but who cares when they have a product so yummy. They are in a strip mall but parking is not a issue. I stopped in with some friends while on the north side. This outlet store sells caramels, chocolates and knick knacks for a family owned business based in Hagerstown, IN. The founders (the Abbott's) started making caramels in 1890, and chocolates around 1910. Although, the business was sold to others in 2012, the original recipes have been maintained for over 100 years. And you can taste the quality in the products. The caramels are melt in your mouth delicious! The chocolates I purchased came in a variety of mostly bite sized samples. Excellent options are available, some with milk chocolate, and others with dark. Most of the candies are made in Indiana. You can tell which are locally made by the title plates for each variety. Other hard candies are available on site, but those, along with the knick knacks are produced elsewhere. Besides the knick knacks, there are some gift packages available. Some are strictly chocolates. Others are chocolates formed into shapes to help celebrate different occasions. If I were a business owner, I would make sure that all my employees would warmly greet every customer as they walked in the door. I would also train them on how to qualify and suggest sales to all new customers. I would also make sure to go above and beyond the guests expectations and invite them to come back. These sales techniques have proven over time that any business can make customers feel special and extract more business from them and will ultimately be successful in be long term. So why on God's green earth would a store so appealing as a candy shop in the most expensive business real estate in Indiana give perhaps the worst ever customer care I've ever encountered? Why was the manager (maybe owner), sitting in the corner behind a computer and not acknowledge me as a customer? Why did I have to greet him first to get him to speak? Why did he nor tell me about his wares when I ape specifically implied that I knew nothing of his product other than a sample box? Why did I have to ask to many questions that he should have been volunteering? After the most perplexing customer service experience ever, I actually bought some candies that should be pretty straight forward: A dark chocolate caramel, a dark buttercream, and a milk chocolate of each. Tried one as soon as I got to the car. Why was this the absolute worst candy ever? dry, over sugary, and just plain stale and nasty tasting? I've heard mixed reviews about Abbott's so I was a bit skeptical when I popped in this afternoon. First of all let me say that this isn't the kind of place you want to bring a small child.. there's a bit of a "bull in a china shop" problem- meaning that they have a lot of porcelain/glass/china collectibles on the walls, in displays, etc., so if you have kids that are easily excited by the fact that they're in a candy shop, be prepared. Back to first impressions, when I walked in it was very quiet, save for classical music, and very sedate. The woman behind the counter welcomed us but that was really it. We looked around and settled on a chocolate covered pretzel for our 3 year old (who we had to keep reminding to keep his hands to himself), a couple candy bars for my husband and myself, and a chocolate creme-filled oversized easter egg (which I had to ask for, and had no problem receiving, she was quite nice about it!). Now that we're home and can enjoy our candy, I must say that it's fantastic. All of it. The chocolate egg, especially. I'll definitely be back before Easter pick up a couple more!!! read more
