THE best chocolates in Indiana. I'm calling it, people. And you can believe me, because I've eaten a lot of chocolate in Indiana. I get around. J. Evelyn Confections -- also somewhat confusingly called Greenfield Chocolates by some -- is a boutique chocolate shop in downtown Greenfield. They use Valrhona chocolate and other high-quality ingredients to make their confections, and everything that they make is so fresh that they ask you to eat it within two weeks. I love that these chocolates are so good that they have rules! I don't think any kind of chocolate, in any amount, would last two weeks at my house, especially if it came from this chocolate shop, so that's no problem for me. They gave samples of their milk chocolate and dark chocolate, both of which were amazing. The chocolate has a snap when you bite into it, which is what you want. Then, it melts in your mouth. So luscious and delicious. I got a small sampler box of some of their popular chocolates: a milk chocolate caramel, a creamy vanilla bean truffle, a lemon chiffon truffle, a chocolate that had champagne in it (!!) and a crispy chocolate bonbon. Each chocolate was unique and spectacular and delightful. They have lots of chocolates and truffles, but they also sell chocolate bars, chocolate-covered nuts, caramel clusters and so many other chocolate-covered things. Greenfield Chocolates -- also called J. Evelyn Confections -- has received the Indiana Artisan seal of approval, which is kind of a big deal! It means that this local chocolate shop is committed to creating handcrafted and high-quality products in Indiana, which is really cool. read more

I tried to walk by this shop, but some involuntary response pulled me in. I don't know if it was all the pink or the artistic chocolates. But I only went in to look, not buy. The clerk was friendly and happy to tell me the story of the owner, her friend who has this remarkable candy making skills. Most of the chocolate comes from Europe and all the candies are made fresh on site. The candies looked like little works of art. Some of the candies have a short shelf life (a couple days) because they are made of fresh ingredients and preservative free. She told me that their best seller are these giant nut clusters. They come with pecans or cashews and milk chocolate or dark. I picked out a dark chocolate cashew cluster. I ate my candy later in the evening and it tasted simply devine. The chocolate was rich and salty and the caramel creamy with the crunch of the fresh tasting nuts. What a treat. I'll be returning. The clerk told me that they decorate seasonly, and Christmas decor is fabulous. read more

Absolutely love their chocolates, the best I ever had. I've gotten chocolate from this place a few times and I've yet to be disappointed. They have so many delicious options to choose from, it's sometimes hard to decide what to get. The chocolates are all made by hand, and they did a fantastic job making them look nice. My wife and I stopped in before lunch at this small chocolate shop on US 40. That made it hard to resist the allure of all the decorated bundles of chocolates that were displayed in time for Valentine's Day. Be aware that this is a Chocolate shop, not a candy store. You won't find much of anything other than items made from or coated with chocolate. Fortunately, that leaves a large variety of items to choose from. I particularly like the over-sized "turtles" they offer with a mixture of nuts and a choice of chocolate coating. They also had chocolate nuts and chocolate pretzels too. For those who prefer individuals bites, they have a display case at the counter for you to see what is offered. If that is too hard for you to decide, they do have assortments available. Wow. This shop is almost as amazing as all the women running it! 10 stars couldn't do their truffles justice. The lemon, lime, and peach truffles can single-handedly cure depression. Their dark chocolate espresso beans might just make you walk on water. Greenfield Chocolates is so pristine that I legitimately question the sanity of anyone foolish enough to leave less than 5 stars in a review. It breaks my heart that they aren't rated a perfect 5 out of 5 stars because the employees, the ambience of the shop, and the quality of the chocolate are deserving of nothing less. Had the opportunity to attend a chocolate making class hosted by the passionate owner and chocolatier, Jayne. All her ingredients are sourced from sustainable, fair trade companies that provide her with the highest quality chocolate from around the globe. Jayne and her amazing staff members (Olivia and Hannah) did a great job of demonstration and instructing us on how to make truffles, sea salted caramels and turtles which we took home. On our way out we bought a variety of their chocolates and they are all amazing!!! The secret ingredient has to be all the love Jayne and her staff put into each handcrafted piece. read more

This place has great service, I've been here a couple times and each time it's amazing. There have been a couple times where I didn't like the chocolates but that's because I went out of my comfort zone. But they have a very wide variety of sweets. They have seasonal options too, for example One time I went there after the Christmas tree lighting downtown greenfield. They had hot cocoa and complimentary things like cookies. Was pretty good. My friend and I love to ride our bikes in the summer and reward ourselves. We've visited here quite a few times when we are tired and want a break. MUST HAVE. We stopped here after finalizing our wedding plans across the street. The woman behind the counter was extremely helpful. She clearly has a passion for making chocolate as well as great customer service. She was able to give us a quite detailed description of each piece that is hand crafted on site. Nothing more enjoyable than discovering a local chocolate shop in a beautiful historic downtown! Husband and I had just filled our bellies at Griggsby's & kinda forgot about dessert until we happened to stumble on this shop, that is. The staff was so nice in describing what was in the case as well as specials. We even got to sample one of the goodies and the chocolatier came up and asked us to tell her even if we didn't like it so they could improve. (Spoiler: it was amazing - some sort of chocolate and pretzel and peanuts and toffee!) They said one of their turtles is on Griggsby's dessert menu. One of the absolute best chocolates I've ever had! Worth the drive to have a special treat.

We loved everything we tried, and can highly recommend the spumoni truffle (in dark chocolate) and the macadamia nut toffee (I think that's what it was called). That was just heavenly. The space is clean, neat, and cute, and I love the giant art visible from inside the store that covers the first level of an evidently run down commercial building. This strip of the little old downtown has a lot of fun places to explore. A stop in here is a must! read more

Went in and got a cold shoulder from an employee to acomadate someone she knew behind me. I left empty handed with my daughter and her infant. I left a comment on their page about it and they delete anything that is not 4 star. If this is 4 star service its not what it used to be. Wish i could say how the the products taste but cant. I grew up on the Olympia Candy Kitchen in Goshen and have longed for another local establishment with the same high quality homemade delights since moving to Indy. I stumbled across their booth at Community East around Valentine's Day and now happily drove 40 min to Greenfield to get my fix. The bourbon caramel and white chocolate turtles are two of my go to's and we get my wife loves the dark chocolate sea salt caramels for special occasions. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a chocoholic who's tried every Indiana brand and all of the nationals too, but my knees go week when I taste excellent caramel, and even weaker when I taste an excellent almond butter toffee, and although I have great taste, I must also disclose that I am related to one of the owners--but, I'm telling you, you are going to agree with me that no other candy maker in Indiana puts out a softer buttery caramel or cares so much about the flavor of toasted almond that goes into their toffees as Greenfield Chocolates does. I drove by this place and saw the sign saying "Greenfield Chocolates" and thought it was some kind of trick or trap, so I pulled over to investigate for the sake of everyone else's safety. I walked in and one of the owners immediately walked out from the cooking area and greeted me warmly. I told her that all i knew about chocolate was that I like it like I like my women--dark. She made the smart move and completely ignored my stupid comment (which I appreciated), and walked me through the various offerings. After oohing and ahhing a lot, I finally put together a small box of around 10 different flavors. They were all really good, but the sea salt dark chocolate toffee was my favorite, and the dark espresso was a close second. The only reason I held back on the fifth star is because while they currently have a decent range of chocolate, it's not quite as large as a place like Good's in Anderson, but I am guessing they will expand their number of offerings soon.
