I am in my 50s and was astonished to learn from my optometrist that I had developed a cataract in my left eye. With at least twelve years of work ahead of me prior to retirement, what seemed to be a routine procedure took on new significance for me since I spend most of my time on the job in front of a computer screen. I need to have excellent vision in order to perform well at my job and the thought of having any complications from surgery made me extremely apprehensive! I feel very fortunate to have been referred to Dr. Kaplan as the ophthalmologist to perform my extraction. From the onset, Dr. Kaplan and his very capable staff went to great lengths to educate me in regards to the cataract, the extraction process, potential risks, lens options, and costs. He made recommendations regarding lens options, but also encouraged me to do additional research to ensure that I was comfortable with my selection. He did a wonderful job of explaining what I could realistically expect after the surgery in respect to my vision with each of the lens options. At no time did I feel pressured to select any particular type of implant. After much deliberation, I ended up selecting a toric lens implant to correct for astigmatism. My procedure went off without a hitch and it was handled with utmost professionalism. Dr. Kaplan even called me at home the evening of my surgery to ensure that I was doing well! One week after surgery, my distance vision in my left eye was 20/20. I am extremely happy that I selected the toric lens and the distance vision and depth perception that I now experience in my left eye with the toric implant has never been better in my life. I realize that many doctors could have dismissed this as a very routine surgery. Dr. Kaplan truly gave me the time and attention that I required. When I joined the military as a young man, I was fitted for glasses in order to perform my job as a radar operator in the USAF. While wearing glasses for the last 50+ years, my vision became worse because I developed cataracts in both eyes. Then I found Dr.Abe Kaplan. Upon my first visit to his office, he explained the necessity, procedures, outcomes, etc. for cataract surgery. His explanation was detailed, clear, and very thorough. I just moved across the country to Chicago a week before I woke up one morning with a painful stabbing feeling in one of my eyes. I went to work hoping that the sensation would subside. It did not. I have gotten very bad infection in my eye. Pain was so bad I could not open it. Dr. Kaplan was very kind to see me same day I called office. He had inspected eye and diagnosis was I had peace of metal in my eye. I was afraid I could loose an eye. Dr Kaplan performed procedure to remove rusted peace of metal right there in office. He is not only the greatest Doctor, but he is an Angel . He performed not a procedure but a magic with his most gentle hands. I just moved to the area and as luck would have it I contracted a pretty bothersome eye infection. I tried Dr Kaplan based on the reviews and I am so relieved that I went to him.
