We were really excited to try this place but the experience from start to finish was terrible. The environment (outside and in) is dirty, for lack of a better word and they were really understaffed. It took longer than most sit-down restaurants to get our food and when we got it, most of it was cold or hadn't been cooked at all. Specifically, the cheese in the the cheese enchiladas we got for the kids wasn't even melted and the entire thing was cold. The side of beans we got were served on a styrofoam plate, as was everything else and they didn't have ice or napkins available. I've given Abelardo's a few chances, but so far I have not been impressed. The carnitas is the best meat on the menu, but still lacks a lot of flavor. Need to douse the food in the hottest salsa to even taste it. I had really high hopes for this restaurant - the Des Moines location is great - but the Ames location is a disappointment. read more

There breakfast buritto's make me reminiscent of breakfast burritos in Los Angeles. Also the carnitas tacos is incredible. The tortas and quesadillas are also great! This location is not the nicest but the staff is friendly and the food certainly makes up for it. Best Mexican food in Ames. read more

Service was less than good, wait staff not very warm or friendly. Overall condition of building is rough, i.e. Open/stained ceiling tiles and unswept floors, dirty bathrooms. Food is below average, canned sauce that tasted like spegetios, and is overpriced for the area. Food is also served room temp and undercooked i.e. cheese not melted. The food here can be hit or miss based on the item ordered, and because some of the workers apear to only speak spanish orders can sometimes be mixed up. The hits are so good though, consistant, and the price is right, so well worth trying. Two of my favorites are the chorizo and egg breakfast burritos (which I order morning noon and night), and the Diablo burittos. They are huge and I use their salsa bar sauses. I most often use their drive through, and the food is far better and priced better than any other drive through in town. read more

This was the worst experience I have had at a restaurant. The service was unprofessional; it was hot outside and even hotter in the restaurant; the food was terrible; both my husband and I couldn't finish our meals and have had stomach pain for the last 24 hours. If you're looking for some great greasy Mexican food with a decent dose of Midwest in it then absolutely come here. Wouldn't call the food horribly authentic by any stretch but I enjoy it. I usually get the adobada burrito and it's quite good, decently seasoned and an that. Got it as a smothered burrito once and that was absolutely amazing. Would make fantastic 2am "let's find a sober friend to drive" food. read more

We eat Ablardos in Ankeny and Des Moines all of the time and love their fried tacos. It is a flour tortilla and they fry it and the hot meat melts the cheese and it is nice and fluffy, sort of like Tasty Tacos but better. I took some kids on the team to the Ames location wanting to introduce them to this great taco and the Ames Ablardos served us hard shell tacos that were fried. As you can imagine a already fried hard taco shell that is refried is just disgusting. I told the guy at the counter these are not the fried tacos and he knew exactly what I was expecting and instead of having the cook remake them correctly, he claimed that they are made differently now. I understand they were busy and didn't want to take the time to remake them the correct way, but there are now two teenagers who will be eating out at restaurants countless more times and will never go back to Ablardos. read more

I really want to like this place. It has a lot of really good things going for it, for instance 24 hours a day is awesome (huevos con chorizo anyone?), and it's authentic Mexican. That said, I have eaten here 4 times and all of those times I've been disappointed. I'm a strong proponent of not judging a restaurant by how it looks, and I think that's especially true for Mexican restaurants in my experience, but honestly what you see is what you get. It's pretty crappy looking outside and in, and it dirty. The salsa bar was really gross and there was salsa splashed all over the place both times I went in. I've ordered drive through a couple of times aswell, and there was not a lot of care put into the presentation. My tacos were super thrown together looking and the guac was all over the place. I had nachos here twice, and honestly I don't think they were very good. I've had some really dank nachos before, and these just didn't live up to it, I think they could improve it if they let me pick specifically what i want to put on it, but there is no option for that. I wasn't terribly impressed by the meat choices, they were all kind of bland and tasteless. In all honesty, I'm gonna stick with Mr. Burrito as my go to authentic Mexican. read more

I like the food but the staff needs much better training. They can't answer questions about the combos and they are distracted by trying to handle the drive through and indoor customers at once. I have twice received something other than I ordered. Checking takeout orders is tough going, too--you practically have to take apart the burritos and tacos to make sure they have the filling you ordered. read more

Absolutely terrible customer service. First of all I will start by saying I have been a regular customer at this location and the Des Moines locations. I had ordered a cheese quesadilla (my usual order) and once I got home, found it had beef in it. I went back and kindly stated the issue, which I was then refused a new one. If they make your order wrong or there is a misunderstanding, good luck on getting it remade or your money back even. They treat you like a criminal and are extremely rude about it. There were no apologizes, manners, just rudely "okay..? do you want to buy a cheese quesadilla then because you ordered beef." Which I most definitely didn't because I'm a vegetarian. Apparently I was supposed to tear open my quesadilla and check it while driving through a DRIVE-THRU. He did not even want to give me my money back until I said I would be calling a manager. He handed me the money and didn't say anything or any apologizes just stared at me. I wouldn't recommend going here unless you want to waste money on subpar food and most likely have it made wrong and be treated like crap. Lost a regular customer over some horrible customer service. read more
