This shop, in my opinion, is one of the best. I've been going there for 15 years and I have had my hair cut by every barber at the shop and they all do a great job. You don't go to this shop if you are in a hurry, but the wait is well worth your time. They do a very thorough cut and they never rush their work. When I started going to this shop they were across the street from St.Mary Hospital and parking was an issue there. But now, they moved East on Highway 18, near the corner of Taos, and next to the Subway sandwich shop. Plenty of parking there. My son would go there for our cuts when he was in high school and home from college. He lives out of state and says he misses the great cuts he got there and wishes he had a shop like Abel's in Santa Fe, NM! This is a decent barber shop, however the lady that works in there is absolutely terrible. I had my hair messed up by her once a couple years ago and decided to give her another try. When I left my hair was not blended at all, it was a straight line from a 0 to a 2. It was embarrassing and I had to go to another barber shop and pay again to get what she did blended. If you go here and the girl is free, do not go to her at all. She's an absolute disgrace to all barbers. read more

I have been a customer with Abels for at least 2 years. His sons always do a great job on my hair. However, I will never go back after the lousy service I experienced. I came in on a Tuesday morning and three customers were being served. I waited 25 minutes for an open barber. The owner(Abel) took a break after his customer and went to a room and closed the door. 10 minutes pass by and a white guy in a business suit with dreads comes in. Soon after a man comes in and asks if the owner (Abel) is available to cut his hair. The son tells the man that I am next for service and the man leaves but comes back with a drink after a few minutes. As soon as the guy comes in again the owner (Abel) comes off break and deliberately ignores me for service and takes this guy instead. All I can think is he didn't want to serve me because I was wearing an American flag hat which I had not worn before. This place doesn't have haircut appointments. As a veteran and being not brown I was blatantly discriminated against. I am also a veteran. The owner is a bigot. read more

This place is amazing. Clean and friendly staff. They also offer free water and have tv, bathroom and airconditioning. I've been coming here since 2013. The best barber here is Jose, hands down! His fades are immaculate and he can do any type of haircuts/lines/fades. Though I am not sure what the tall man's name is, but I had a haircut with him once when Jose wasn't available and he is also good. The rest of the barbers which are women are somewhat skilled as well. I will continue to come here for more years to come. read more

This review is regarding the straight razor shave service i received only. This review does not reflect anything else but the previously mentioned service. This is also not an attempt to badmouth anybody, just a heads up that you may need to be very specific when requesting these services from the same person that i was served by. I came here on a whim in order to get my head and face shaved. I am always on the lookout for a good barber so I Yelp'd it and these guys came up with a good review. They took me in on short notice, which was cool. I was served by the lady that works there. I did not catch her name, however there were only 2 people working in the shop. I'm assuming the man that was there was the owner, Abel. My issues with the head and face shave performed on my by the lady were not very pleasurable. Getting a shave is supposed to be a relaxing experience. I feel that she did not really prep my skin for the shaves. for my head, she just put some shaving cream on it and started in with the straight razor. No hot towel, no oils or conditioner for the skin. This was not like what I have experienced before when getting shaved at a shop. She did take her time, however. It's not like she was just blazing through it or anything. I just feel that I wasn't prepped at all. The same for my neck- except maybe a bit worse. I didn't even get any shaving cream applied to it. She put some sort of oil on it and it made for a rough shave all around. I have somewhat sensitive skin on my neck but this was pretty rough. She also kept wiping my head and neck with a dry towel the whole time. This only made everything worse and made my skin more irritated. I don't think that I'll come here again for these services. I suggest that if you do, be very specific or ask questions about how they do their work. read more
