Animal Services is one of those necessary evils. the good part is if your pet goes missing, its a good place to look. If there are problem animals in your neighborhood, they can help. Strays are a problem in lots of neighborhoods, including mine. Every so often, I take a couple bags of pet food to them just to help out. Yes lots of animals end up being destroyed but that is because of irresponsible people, not the poor animals. read more

Found a dog that was going to get hit out in the street, scared out of her mind. I brought her here before they opened to the public but when the staff are here cleaning. I was unable to keep the dog at my house and had to go to work. My only options were to throw the dog or or hope one of the staff would have a modicum of compassion for an animal and let me drop her off. They told me that of those were my options that I should throw her back into the street because they needed to clean the floors to be presentable to the public. Even though a drop off shouldn't take more than a few minutes and sparing one of 4+ employees wouldn't impact their opening time (no one is coming to adopt pets at 1030am on a Tuesday either), they told me to just let the dog loose. They show 0 remorse for there behavior and gossip about clients and people like there's no tomorrow. They do NOT act professional and barely feel like truly assuring tolling their eyes at people as they are assisting them. And barely try to do anything. Today I was treated horribly trying to find my lost cat was kicked out for 0 reason and told "cats were not in there within the time frame when in actuality they WERE in there when he was lost they refused to let me see the cats that I needed to see to verify telling me lies. read more

I personally have worked here for two months and never had an issue with anyone. I had even worked during the hardest time when parvovirus and distemper were infecting it's way through the shelter. Just last week I was wrongfully terminated because one of my coworkers ,Larry Morales , told a lie saying. I kicked a dog in the face. My other coworker Richelle lied saying I was intentionally spraying dogs with a harsh chemical. I was not doing so intentionally and the chemical was dawn dish soap. I was never trained properly on how to handle the animals and because of this I had been bit and scratched by multiple cats when working with them. Karen Holland the director/ auditor of the shelter terminated me wrongfully without a warning or a write up. It was also told to me by Larry that the last person that worked there kicked a dog as well and that he was the one that reported it. Hmmm sounds suspicious to accuse two people of the same crime.... I would never do anything to hurt any animals. I have three animals of my own and they are large breeds. I just want to say if you have intentions of working for this place I would tell you to keep on looking for other offers. The workers here are fake, rude and manipulative. We have adopted two dogs from the shelter in the past 18 months, the latest on 2/14/22, a 6 month old Pittie mix. I understand that this is a city funded and run shelter but the director does not seem to be thinking through his decisions. Case in Point: he decided to take in 30 owner surrenders last week and then let volunteer organizations know last night, 3/7/22 that there was an urgent list of dogs that would be killed for space reasons by end of day on 3/8/22, most of them either puppies or 1-2 years of age. This illustrates poor judgement on his part without any consideration for the horrific consequences about to ensue. The new shelter with All Kind Animal Initiative cannot be built soon enough. What a shameful way these poor animals are treated, not to mention the sub-humans that dump their animals like trash. The City of Abilene seems to be asleep at the wheel by allowing this "director" to continue making bad decisions. read more

The five stars are for the animals, I want you to remember that it may be the first time you see this animal but it is not the first time they see eager hands brush along their cage. These animals are going through a near constant play. We adopted a male tuxedo from this shelter, and he is so patient and my best friend. I implore you to know what you want (cat or dog etc.) and have those supplies ready at home well in advance and just go with an open heart. Those animals have played pretend enough so if one lights up around YOU it's because they feel a connection to YOU. Also, try to have a vet visit lined up as soon as possible. The place looks as anyone would assume an understaffed, over populated animal shelter to be but the animals themselves are ready to fill those places in your heart. read more

We adopted two puppies from the shelter in Abilene. Not long after, we discovered they had worms. After the vet cured their worms and gave them their rabies shots, they went into heat. Getting them spayed had to wait. The vouchers were expiring, though both the vet and the shelter said it would not be an issue. Well, it was an issue. When it was safe again, the shelter refused to extend the vouchers. Raven made every excuse, including that a former employee (the one we had dealt with) did not file our paperwork. The shelter did not even know the dogs had had their rabies shots. We were being blamed for being negligent. After every excuse was put aside with the proper paperwork and a call from the vet, Raven found a way to reject renewing the vouchers anyway. Over 500 dollars to get the dogs spayed. Value? Reliability? If you call being spiteful reliability, then yes. Raven told us from the start that there was no way we'd ever get those vouchers extended, and when we met every demand, they were still rejected. A total rip-off that cost us big time after a year of covid financial hardship. Disgusting behavior. read more

This is Animal Control...the pound. These dogs and cats are found on the street or surrendered by their owners. If found on the street they are held for 5 days to to see if someone will claim them, after that it's a numbers game to see if they'll get euthanized or adopted. Owner surrenders don't get 5 days because no one is looking for them. If you are expecting a 100% healthy, full bred, fully trained animal, you may or may not get it here. It's THE POUND. They do what they can with very little resources. They don't fully groom and vet every animal here because they will more than likely be put down in a few days. You will however, get a loving, grateful, sweet companion who is waiting at death's door. You are literally saving their life. They will come microchipped. Many times a year, with the help of the SPCA, the adoption fees are slashed to half price and you get a voucher to go towards a spay/neuter procedure. Abilene Animal Services is not a business or non-profit - it's a city service. Getting an animal here means you also agree to spay/neuter and get city required vaccinations for the animal you adopted. They follow up to make sure this has happened, fine you if don't. Good for them! They are trying to encourage responsible pet ownership so they don't have to put down so many dang animals! We adopted our little terrier mix here. He had fleas and tapeworm. After a week at home he got a respiratory infection which required a little vet care. What do you expect - he was a stray!?!? Guess what - we bathed him, gave him some medicine and TLC and he got better. Now he's the sweetest boy and you can tell is glad to be out of there. We get tons of compliments on how cute and good-natured he is. That's what adopting is about: getting them out of there, giving them a loving home and bringing back to good health if need be. As for customer service? I thought they were just fine. Imagine how chipper you would be if you worked at a place where thousands of adoptable animals get put down every year. And they also have to witness abuse, neglect, and owners surrendering their sweet pets for asinine reasons. I'd be cranky, but in my experience, every one was professional. read more

Abilene Animals Services Shelter is a government operated facility that must take in any animal that comes to its door, it therefore is not a "No Kill" facility, few government operated shelters are due to not having enough space. Shelters that are "no kill" are privately funded SPCAs and humane societies or other small organizations / pick and choose which animals they will accept. Please adopt from this shelter as these animals greatly need a home. If you live in the area, please encourage this shelter to start a foster program. Fostering frees up cage space for animals at the shelter by putting them in temporary homes. If you have an elderly sick pet please pay your veterinarian to humanely euthanize it, do not discard it at the pound. Elderly dogs and cats normally do not find homes. This shelter needs more funding, if you live in the area ask your government rep to increase funding for animal shelters. There are a lot of comments of people being turned away from surrendering stray animals, this should not be happening, please contact your government rep. read more

We adopted a Labrador retriever mix puppy on 9/14/19. On Friday 09/27/19 we took Barkley to an animal hospital that diagnosed him with Parvo. I called the animal shelter. I asked if the animals get tested for Parvo before being admitted. She told me the animals get a booster shots for parvo, but they do not test them when they are brought to the shelter. I asked about covering the hospital bill and they told me no and that I can return the dog and they would put him to sleep. According to the vet he has had it for awhile. Which means he had it at the shelter. Do you know how heartbreaking this whole situation was not to mention expensive. This place could have cared less and they could careless about their animals. The shelter is always dirty along with the cages and the staff and the volunteers are rude. I will never come back to this shelter and I hope someone does some investigating on this shelter. read more

I adopted a kitten from this shelter recently and he died within two weeks of me having him. From the day I brought him home he was sickly. He had awful diarrhea literally from the second I got him until he died and barely ate anything the short time I had him. His stomach was extremely bloated the as well which lead me to believe he had worms, which they claim to treat before you adopt them. When I tried to contact them the phone was disconnected so I couldn't even speak to anyone about my concerns. I finally got ahold of an email was able to contact them that way and when someone called me they were extremely rude. After my cat died I called a local vet to see if they had any idea of what could have caused him to die and when I told the man from the shelter what the vet had told me he dismissed it and just told me "sometimes kittens just die." I understand that they can only do so much for these animals but the facility is gross and the poor animals look so sad and unhealthy. Go to another shelter if you can help it. read more
