I stayed at this Inn the night before visiting the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. This Inn is definitely in the perfect location as far as proximity to the Museum goes - it's just down the street. Perfect! The Inn prefers that you check in during a certain time period so they can ensure they're there to greet you. I had a meeting that resulted in a late arrival on my part, so I called ahead to let them know when I would be arriving and they accommodated easily and kindly. When you arrive, you park at the back of the residence, but you enter at the front of the residence. Those with mobility issues should take note and plan ahead for that. Along that same line, this property does not appear to be wheelchair accessible. All of the rooms I saw were upstairs and the entrance required several stairs to access the porch. However, I may have just not seen other options - calling ahead to ask may be best to make sure. I was greeted by Adrian, who checked me in and showed me around. She was very attentive about what I could/would eat for breakfast the next morning, which implies a lot of experience on her part and being conscientious about not wasting food. I definitely appreciated that. I stayed in the Hurd Room, which was perfect for my needs. I was there in October and the room had a small space heater provided for use, which I was very very grateful for. I know that I'm more sensitive than most to cooler temperatures, so while most people would probably have been fine, I appreciated being able to make the room fit my preferences on my own. There is a large array of movies that you can borrow to watch, most of which are older and asking classic lines which is nice to take a step back and enjoy. There were also cookies and tea available through the evening. I've seen other reviews and noted myself that some bathroom areas can be quite small. However, I saw that as a result of converting Victorian spaces into modern lodging areas. Areas were simply smaller in that era than we're used to now and keeping the integrity of the space has the natural result of cozier accommodations. I personally didn't mind any of it, but I can see how others might. The bed was comfortable, but be aware that this is a typical Kansas town that was built around a railroad station. So trains still run through there very frequently and at all hours of the night. If that will disturb your sleep, plan accordingly. I honestly don't think you can stay anywhere near the museum without that aspect. Breakfast the next morning started with a yogurt, fruit, and granola parfait. Adrian makes the granola herself on site. The entree for that morning was French toast with a fruit reduction and bacon. It was very nice. This is a nice little b&B in Abilene, is. It's nothing fancy, but appears to be well cared for and they provide a good breakfast. Luxurious? No, but simple, clean and well managed yes. What did I appreciate: lots of hot water in shower, a chair and light in room for reading, breakfast, location near downtown ( walking distance to restaurants). No serious complaints, except the bed was hard for my tastes. Suggestions: spruce up the room a bit by adding a pleasant bed cover. I just read another review and am appalled to hear they screen for "traditional couples only". If that's not true, please tell me and I will eliminate this comment. Just OK. Innkeeper is not very personable, doesn't seem happy and it definitely conveys in conversation. Perhaps the " hospitality" business is not for her. Bed not comfortable at all. Front big Victorian porch underwhelming, needs some serious TLC. Everyone else's surroundings porches were beautiful to gaze at. Breakfast & coffee was good, that's about it. read more

This place is sweeter than a cake made of pie. A lot of it's been restored to its 1880s style; it's a lovely old home in the middle of a residential neighborhood. We stayed in the Eisenhower room (complete with a giant picture of Ike!) and it was comfortable and well-kept. The balcony is fantastic. One of the owners had fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies ready for us when we checked in (!!!!). Our suite had a (tiny! so tiny) bathroom. We were shown the cabinet full of VHS tapes in case we wanted to watch a movie (ADORABLE). But here's the best part - you know how most B&Bs throw some danish and a cup of coffee at you in the morning? Not this place. They asked my husband when he booked if we had any dietary restrictions and he mentioned that I avoid wheat when I can, but that it's not really a big deal. And when the breakfast part of the B&B experience came around... there was an epically delicious frittata, orange juice, coffee, fresh fruit, and while the other guests had fresh-baked biscuits, I got a big ol' slice of HOMEMADE, gluten-free banana bread. I am not even freaking kidding, you guys. How amazing is that? If we ever have a reason to stay in Abilene again, we'll be staying here. read more

This is a very clean and well run Victorian bed and breakfast. The Victorian decor is nicely done, not overly done, as we have seen in others inns of this style. The rooms are spotless. I am aghast. I tried to book a room at a B&B in Abilene, Kansas a couple years ago. I asked some general questions and decided to book. The owner asked for my name (I told her) and my wife's name (ummmm....there's no wife). I told her the name of the other guest (a man). I was asked if I wanted two rooms (NO). Did I want 2 beds? (NO). I was informed that they will not rent to same-sex couples. I was speechless. Dumbfounded. Really? In this day and age? You would turn down $100/night? She did offer the name of another B&B that allows same-sex couples, but still..... I suppose the inn is as lovely as the photographic depictions on the website. I cannot say for sure, since it was made clear that my partner and I were not welcome. As a result, the local Holiday Inn Express did get my business. It was comfortable, had a pool, was less expensive and such private matters as sexual identity weren't conditions for securing lodging. If you are a same sex couple, know that you are not welcome at this establishment (unless, perhaps, you wish to pay for separate rooms and contribute financially to innkeepers with discriminatory practices). To all others, please avoid Abilene's Victorian Inn. Discrimination is simply unacceptable. Note: Their website does say the following under POLICIES: "Overnight accommodations for singles and traditional couples." Also note that POLICIES is a tiny link at the very bottom of their web pages. It is not listed in the prominent main banner at the top of the pages. When I visited the POLICY page, I was looking for the cancellation policy. I wouldn't think to look for a "who is welcome and who is not" policy. read more

Stayed two nights at this property. Good: Breakfast was delicious. Bed was comfortable. interior was clean. OK: Decor feels very traditional to the period. Cable TV was good. Hard to put it in words, but didn't feel fresh --maybe a lack of fresh air. NOT SO GOOD: WiFi was very spotty even for basic email and browsing. Outdoor space (front porch) could be lovely but was not maintained well. Debris all over and some of the chair cushions were falling apart. Signs in front yard needed repair. Temperature in room and common area was inconsistent. Very warm first night and then OK second night. Seemed like the host turned the air off or up to save $$$ which made it uncomfortable at times. Brought to host's attention and it was suggested I use a natural remedy. THE UNACCEPTABLE: Did not realize this when I made the reservation and did not see until after our stay, but buried in the fine print of the "policies" is a statement that they cater to "traditional" couples. If I had seen this prior to our visit, I would not have patronized this business and will not ever patronize this business in the future and cannot recommend it to anyone. I think we are a "traditional" couple (whatever that really means) but do not support a business that discriminates against anyone. read more

I have stayed at several B&B's over the years and totally enjoyed my 2 night stay. We were given a personal tour of the home and the unique items and history of the home by Adrian. My niece graduated from high school so I asked my sister what she would recommend as a place to stay, and she said that the local people enjoy having their friends and family stay at the Victorian Inn - and she was right. After the graduation we all went back to the Victorian Inn and sat in the main living room and talked, it was so warm and private and worked out very well for us... and grabbing a free refreshment was perfect. The history and decoration of this home made our stay very special, and it was worth the stay just to have the amazing breakfast that Adrian prepares - you will love the Quiche, or the French toast, if you are lucky enough to have those as your yummy breakfast. Adrian and Jay are very warm and giving people, and they make you feel appreciated and welcome in their home. Thanks for the great stay, and next time I come back I will book with you! read more

I stayed for a few days. What a lovely experience. I came to look at a property to purchase; very stressful experience, but Adriene was accommodating and calming. My stay became a wonderfully, serene experience. The best bed; so comfy and the pillows so fluffy. My room had a balcony and I sat, listened to the birds chirping and a train in the distance. You can see the beautiful park from there. I left feeling nurtured. I awoke today sorry I would not be having one of her amazing breakfasts. To begin, the property, itself, is fine. While the decor seems strangely organized, the B&B is clean overall (it reminded me of visiting my grandmother's home). I needed to visit Abilene in order to conduct research at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and while making reservations with the caretaker, "Doc," he offered to pick me up from the Wichita Airport. In his words, he would pick me up "for a fee of $60 or $70 whatever you feel comfortable with." Coming from Los Angeles, I had little idea how far Wichita was from Abilene and felt his offer was excellent--I could save money and not worry about the hassle of finding a small Kansas town late at night. When my plan arrived, "Doc" was prompt and the rest of my stay was charming. On my last evening, I received a bill $60 higher than expected and was told by "Doc" that his picking me up was more taxing than he expected and therefore in that moment, his shuttle fee has gone from $70 to $130 he then went on to try to convince me that I came out ahead regardless because I didn't have to drive myself. In short, I caution visitors to possibly avoid any offers of "extras" at the Abilene Bed and Breakfast. Prices are apparently fluid and subject to radical change at any moment. read more

If you want a warm welcome, elegant surroundings, and the best gourmet breakfast you have ever had, stay at Abilene's Victorian Inn. When you stay there I suggest that you ask the hostess about the history of the Inn, at which time you will find that you are sharing quarters with some of Abilene's most interesting and historic characters. We always try to stay at at the Inn when we are in Abilene. But try to make your reservations early because a lot of other people like to stay there too. We stayed on the top floor. It was spacious enough to comfortably accommodate my mother (her 70th birthday) and four of her daughters. The Innkeepers are warm and welcoming. Adrian made a gourmet breakfast that was to die for. This would be a great place for a girls weekend getaway. read more

We visited the Presidential library in town and needed a one night stay. We've always loved B&B's and reading about this one, well...we booked. I must say, we were definitely not let down! The home is beautifully decorated with 1940's music softly playing throughout the house. We stayed in the Hazelette room and loved it. Very roomy and comfortable bedding AND a lovely balcony to enjoy the spring weather. Breakfast was absolutely DELICIOUS. Adrian is a fantastic CHEF! She is such a joy to sit and visit with, is a huge supporter of her town and other local businesses and just a joy to be around! If you are in Abilene, you simply must stay here! My husband and I were so looking forward to staying at this beautiful Inn but could not in good conscience keep our reservation ... When our reservation email arrived it states that "children 6 and over - Singles and "TRADITIONAL Couples " are welcome as guests. This information is not disclosed on the website BEFORE the reservation is made. Given the fact that same sex couples have the right to marry this policy is terribly discriminatory and sad. I wanted to share our experience visiting the Victorian Inn. My brother and I wanted to take our 82 year old father out for a boys weekend adventure. It started in Abilene and the first stop was this bed and breakfast. What a way to kick off the trip! My dad had never been to a B&B before and Adrian met us at the door to welcome us. She showed us around the first floor and we were quickly taken with the charm of the home. She really made us feel like family. When Jay, her husband arrived, he grabbed my dads bags and escorted us to our quarters on the third floor. We had the entire thing to ourselves. He pointed out all the details of our room. The deck off the master room, the temp control, the fridge and then invited us down for home made cookies in the dining room. The beds were spacious and comfortable. We lounged on the back balcony for a visit before grabbing our chocolate chip cookies. Sitting in the parlor we listened to 1930's big band music from the upright vintage radio. My dad was in paradise talking to us about some of his childhood memories! We even took a group picture wearing the parlor hats adorning the sitting room. After a great nights sleep we headed for the dining room. The breakfast was formal as we dined with six other guests. Adrian, who is a Chef, started us with creamy yogurt topped with granola with assorted fruit on the side. Then Walnut Carmel French toast, crisp bacon just the way I like it, coffee and juice. I submitted a request for a reservation at Abilene's Victorian Inn. I am hearing impaired and do not talk via telephone. The owner of the inn insisted that the only way she would accept a reservation request was by telephone. Initially, she told me she doesn't like to use e-mail for security reasons. Later, she claimed it was a time management issue. But in the meantime, we exchanged numerous e-mails and could have handled this matter amicably by e-mail. She refused to work with me, and I did not stay there. I was disappointed and found her service and unwillingness to accommodate my hearing loss unacceptable. Because she was so inconsiderate of my situation, I will never stay there. Nor would I recommend the inn to others. read more
