One of the torsion springs broke on our 2 car garage door last night. I called multiple garage repair places early on this Saturday morning and the soonest someone could come out to repair was Monday, and the average cost was $300 on up. One company quoted me $200 but I would have to wait until Monday, which I wasn't willing to, AND they were a Phoenix based company (buy local!) I looked on YouTube for a possible DIY project, saw that I could order the springs and winding rods for pretty cheap, under $100. But I also read about the extremely high tension that the springs are held under and that people who don't know what they're doing all of the time (like me) have ended up maimed and disfigured as a result of... well.. being cheap. So long story short I called a few more place and got ahold of Tim from Able Garage Door Service. He came out within in 2 hours of our phone conversation, in less than an hour he had replaced the springs, educated me on some stuff, gave me a 5 year warranty and then I paid him $230. I called three garage door companies to get a quote on possibly replacing our garage door because it had some cracks and it was making a clunking noise when it closed. The first company came out, looked at our door and immediately gave us a quote for a new door. Able Garage Door came out afterwards and told us we didn't need to replace our door but instead recommended a brace be placed to support the door. We had him install the new brace which was considerably less than buying an entire new door. We appreciate the fact that Able looked at our door and didn't automatically say we needed a new door and instead recommended a more cost effective and safe way of fixing our door. As I am a retiree and on a fixed income this was helpful in going forward with the repair. He called ahead and actually came a little early (when does that happen). Our garage door was coming down most of the way but then rolled back up. Called Able Garage Door on Saturday and Tim came out about an hour later, The spring on one side was broken.
