Today, Saturday, I got home from my hike in the desert at 10:20 am. Clicked the garage door opener, the door opened, and I drove the car in. I clicked the opener to close the door and the garage door partially went off the tracks and didn't close. I tried to get it back on track without success. I called some local garage door companies to get professional help. The first company I called had a recorded message saying that they only worked Monday through Friday. The second company I called had no availability until the following week. The third company I called answered professionally and told me that they work seven days a week and that they'd have the owner come out today between 12 noon and 3:00 pm. He arrived at 12:30 pm, got right to work, and had the problem fixed by 1:00 pm. He didn't try to upsell me, only charged me for the service I needed, and was very easy to work with. I'm very happy with John's Garage Doors. They charged me a fair price and, in my opinion, I got a whole lot more than I paid for. I recently had the misfortune of working with John's. I'd hired them on a minor job before and they were fine, so when a spring snapped at my home (it happens), I thought I'd try them again. Big mistake. Two guys came out and we discussed what I was looking for, namely more substantial springs that would hold up better with lots of use. The crew chief recommended installing 262-31 high-cycle springs, which I agreed to, and what appeared on the invoice I ultimately received (see photo). But instead of those, I later discovered that they installed one 250-33 and one 218-24. These were mismatched springs (see photo). I did some research to find out if it was okay to install two different springs on a garage door. Genini stated: "No, it's generally not okay or safe to install two different garage door springs (like a 250-33 and 218-24) because it creates uneven tension, stressing components and risking premature failure, damage, or injury, even if some doors are designed for different springs; professionals always recommend replacing both springs with matched pairs for balance and safety." ChatGPT said: "Short answer: No -- on a standard residential garage door, it is generally not okay to have two different springs like that." Other searches came up with similar results, and all with a detailed explanation of why this is bad practice and not industry standard. When I objected to the installed mismatched pair since they were not what I agreed to, not what I was billed for, and not an appropriate approach, I only received a lot of pushback from John's about how this was all just fine, very professionally done, and not a problem at all. As they wrote to me: "Like I said springs on your door now are regulated to your door the ones that I had on the invoice is similar to the ones I put on your door because they were a 2 inch instead of a 1 inch so there's nothing wrong with the springs that I put on your door. They were perfectly fine." Nonsense. They also told me that our garage doors were old (25 years), failing, and everything needed to be replaced. Sounded like a hustle, but I asked for and received an estimate for the work. I then had other companies come out to inspect the doors and hardware and give me estimates as well, though none said the doors, tracks or hardware were failing, and each of whom scratched their heads over the mismatched springs. Anyway, John's has refused to make it right either by taking them back and giving me a refund for the cost, or installing matching high-cycle springs like 262-31's. As they said in their 'Final Response', "...since the work was completed appropriately, there is no further action we can take. We consider this matter closed." Despite any assertion they in their Final Response, management never offered to come out and take a look at what was done, rather only to have someone (the installer?) come out and tell me why this was great work, appropriately and professionally done - "I will stop Tuesday to take your other spring and I will explain it to you in person." They 'explained' it to me twice in their emails, so I didn't want or need to hear it yet again in person. Repetition of nonsense is the very definition of gaslighting. So, I'm out several hundred dollars and now have to deal with mismatched springs that I didn't ask for, want or buy. Oh, and the one good spring they removed that wasn't broken that I asked be returned to me so I might be able to use it again somewhere? They agreed, twice, to do so, but they never did return it. I certainly won't use John's again. If this is the kind of company you think you want to do business with, be forewarned. You can do much better. read more

I found Johns Garage Doors through Yelp and someone had posted what a honest company they are. In fact all of the reviews were 5 stars. I called them yesterday and they were able to schedule me next day. The technician was running ahead of schedule about 30 mins before my appt window. I was appreciative that I got the call from the company asking if he can come sooner. (which did work with my schedule). Anyways, the problem with my garage was that all of the joints were dry so it just needed some lubrication. The technician sprayed each of the joints and the loud squeaky noise went away. Problem Fixed ! The best part was the technician didn't even charge me. It was complimentary. Most other company have a minimum for their time and service but Johns Garage Doors is soooo honest and sooo customer service oriented. I highly recommend John. He listened to me, offered some good advice and options without being the least bit pushy and then got the job done at a fair price very quickly. A month later, I am still very pleased with the result. Plus, he is an engaging guy, the type you wouldn't mind sharing a coffee or beer with. I had a good basis for comparison, as he was the third person/company to look at the door. The problem started with just a shrieky noise during our cold weather here. I thought we might just need a "tune-up", but I could see the lifter was old (we bought the house just a couple years ago). The first guy immediately started upselling me to replace everything, including the door, and joining their "membership" program for a couple extra $100. The second guy sprayed the rails with silicon for $75, which did not fix the problem. With John, we settled squarely in the middle with a new spring, gliders and a nice quiet modern lifter. He was perfectly happy to install the less expensive lifter, but I opted for the better one with bright LED lights and a very quiet operation and I am glad I did. Nice job. Our GDO had crapped out and it was not worth fixing. That much was obvious. Mr Lopez came out within a few hours of the problem occurring and I decided on a more expensive option than the basic. He assured me it would be quiet (belt driven - true) and reliable (yet to be established). So there is a hole in my bank account now but I have what I think will be a good GDO for the next few years. GDO' and GD's in general are a money sink so I am not too bothered by that. The answer is 14, by the way. I need to go out now to my garage and sit and stare and admire the newness and the quietness of it. read more
