In the midst of a global pandemic I was brought back to an exam room that was not cleaned (there was an obviously dirty, used paper over the exam table). So happy I found this doctor. A few weeks ago I had my 4th surgery from which 2 were done by Dr Shashua. One of my surgeries by another surgeon was a c-section. During both of my surgeries dr Shashua gave me a tummy tuck, when I didn't even ask for it, so the scar looks like I've had just one surgery and my stomach looks flat! :) More serious info. Both surgeries went very well, fast recovery, no complications. And some history. 8 years ago I found out I have fibroids and had my first surgery right away. They came back and I saw multiple doctors to get advice. The best thing about this sad experience was finding this doctor. I could always trust that when I see him, he'll tell me all possible options I have. I was referred to Dr. Shashoua after years of not being able to be inmate. My first visit he was able to tell me what my true issues were, what was needed gave me the options and reading material. I never felt rushed, he was very empathetic, and professional. I then had dual surgery in September 2021, and ladies little did I know after suffering for over 15 years that moment would be the turning point in my life. I'm now able to be inmate with no issues, he also diagnose me with endometriosis which he removed successfully. He is now helping me with my dream of becoming a parent. I was well informed on all of my options and was included in the decision making. All of my questions were answered and I was well educated and prepared for my total hysterectomy. During my surgery Dr. Shashoua discovered other issues that were diminishing my health and promptly addressed those as well which were a bad appendix and enlarged r. ovary which both were removed. I am so thankful to have been a patient of the most skilled, kind, caring, humble, thoughtful surgeon, Dr. Abraham Shashoua. As another yelper shared in her review, I had a mess of a debilitating mass and just a few days after surgery I look and feel great. At our initial appointment, Dr. Shashoua assessed my problem listened to my concerns provided caring expert advice and patiently waited for my decision.( I thought to myself,"he's going to run out" and leave me with a nurse to decide) No, he didn't, we talked more. Even though he's the expert he never brushed my concerns aside. He spoke gently and looked me directly in the eyes with absolute truth. I suppose it's just his way but I am truly blessed to have had him as my surgeon. His staff supports him fully and shares his kind and patient way of treating patients with the utmost of respect. I had scheduled appointments and stopped in with questions, every time the staff greeted me warmly, were receptive, supportive and helpful. Even though my hospital stay was only a couple of days, the team of attending physicans, physician assistants, nurses, Raff (hospital and clinic) manager (Tina) front end staff and assistants along with Dr, Shashoua were always available to answer questions and provide a hug when needed. I am saddened to think I only have 2 more office visits but I am 120% better and for that I am thankful. Eight weeks ago I had a robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery performed by Dr Shashoua. He performed a total hysterectomy (uterus and cervix removed), in addition to removal of my fallopian tubes and one ovary and it was the best thing I ever did and literally gave me my life back free of pain, discomfort, and all sorts of misery. I have dealt with painful periods and endometriosis for over 30 years including 2 prior surgeries for endo. At the age of 52 I was still not in menopause and getting my period consistently every 3 weeks. This meant I was in pain and miserable at least half of the month. I wasn't able to plan on anything and had to back out of a lot of personal/work events and travel because I was feeling so horrible so much of the time. I couldn't imagine another year going by living like this. Luckily, one day in Oct 2016, while searching for a new doctor I came across Dr Shashoua's name and based on all the reviews I read from other women on this site I decided I would take a chance on a new doctor and make an appointment. Now I feel obligated to give feedback on my own experience in the hopes it will help someone else out. Dr Shashoua is a really compassionate and proactive doctor/surgeon. He started by taking the time to just sit and listen to my history, symptoms, and complaints. He then did an ultrasound right then and there in his office to see for himself of how things looked and then told me what he saw as the issue and explained various options. I chose to have the hysterectomy and everything Dr Shashoua suspected were the issues turned out to be what he found when he went in....severe adenomyosis, horrific endometriosis all over including bladder, bowel and ovaries, and cyst on one of my ovaries. I was very nervous initially with the idea of a hysterectomy but by the time the surgery date came around I was calm and ready to get it over with because I was so prepared and ready to get relief. It is major surgery and the first two weeks of recovery were hard but each week after I felt better and better and by week six I was feeling unbelievably better. I can honestly say that I haven't felt this good in decades! I also have to commend Dr Shashoua's staff who are all really helpful and professional. Additionally, I was so impressed by the staff at Illinois Masonic hospital where the surgery took place. From pre-op to post-op to the floor nursing staff (9 Stone)...they were all wonderful (Karen, Rhea, Lita) and really made my surgery experience much better than I could have imagined. Don't wait because the longer you wait the more of your life will slip away when you could be getting relief and be pain free. He's been my gynecologist for about 4 years. I actually had him by accident (the original gynecologist had to deliver a baby so he was covering on that day). He is so honest, professional, knowledgeable and has a terrific personality: appropriate humor, easy-going and caring. I work in a hospital setting and I know some doctors have way too many patients and it becomes so impersonal. He knows my history, knows when I've missed his recommended visits, and always assures me that I can contact him (or get a hold of him through his assistant Maggie) at anytime. I cannot thank Dr.Shashua enough for all that he has done for me. Dr.Shashua is just a brilliant surgeon with down to earth personality, very modest, very caring for his patients. I had 2 prior surgeries and my second one complicated by intra abdominal bleeding with development of multiple adhesions. My case was so complicated that very "famous" doc from Northwestern Hospital turned me down regarding my supposedly laparoscopic surgery (minimally invasive) stating that he might need even to open the abdomen (laparotomy with partial colon removal and colostomy) and he does not want to do it. I was very nervous and hesitant regarding this surgery after my consultation in Northwestern Hospital even I really needed it. Dr.Shashua was on a contrary very different. He was so professionally confident that he can do a laparoscopic procedure, that I believed him (a chance for conversion to laparatomy always exists and he was honest about it too). But he was so positive and calm about my chances with just laparoscopic minimally invasive procedure that he made me feel at ease with my decision to proceed with my surgery. Now, 2 month after my successful minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure I can say with confidence that Dr.Shashua is the best Ob/Gyn surgeon in the world! Great Doctor! The birthing of my two children was not kind to my body and my ob/gyn clinic was going to leave me "as is", "as is" was a gaping hole. Well as is was "significantly abnormal" and I was not ok with that. I emailed Dr. Shashoua to see if it was something fixable, he himself called me. I was able to make an appointment rather quickly considering the practice being a specialist. Dr. Shashoua checked everything out and told me that I had been left "significantly abnormal" and pointed out a couple other issues that I didn't even realize, as in my bladder was falling out (great! what am I an 80 year old woman?!) The good news was he could fix all of it!!!! I am now 2 weeks post-op, I feel great and I look way better than I should having given birth to two large babies!! Dr. Shashoua knew Immediately what my pain issues were and how to treat them. I've driven 2 hours from Wisconsin to Chicago on multiple occasions because he is the only doctor I have met that has actually brought me relief from my pain, discovered it's source and provided me with a diagnosis of pelvic floor inflammatory disease. His treatments have enabled me to improve my quality of life for the first time in years. I suffered from misdiagnosed chronic pain for over 5 years. Sitting for any length of time was intolerable. I went to orthopedic, GI doctors, and tried physical therapy several times. I went through a hip surgery thinking that was the issue and would resolve my pain but the sitting pain quickly returned. None of my providers ever mentioned possible Pelvic floor inflammatory dysfunction. Prior to this issue I was an avid runner but when this all started my quality of life and daily functioning declined at home, work, in my relationships, with physical exercise as well as my ability to socialize. I have intentionally waited until after my 3-month post operative check up to write this review. I was referred to Dr. Shashoua by my regular OBS/GYN to address incontinence. It is so frustrating to pee your pants every time you cough... some of you know exactly what I mean. Dr. Shashoua is easy to talk to, focuses on how he can improve your health and quality of life, and is a very fine surgeon. The office is clean and well run. I have never had to wait an unreasonable time for my appointment, and everyone is friendly and helpful. I read other reviews out of curiosity, and don't at all understand the post that gives him 1 star. None of the examination room doors line up with the door to the waiting room, and even if it did, there is a curtain inside the door that is always pulled across the end of the room by the physician's assistant before any examination. I have never been asked to stand (or even sit) naked in the room, and even while performing some potentially embarassing (because of our culture, not because of anything anyone in the office did) examination procedures Dr. Shashoua and his staff have been professional and did everything reasonably possible to make me comfortable (emotionally and to the extent possible, physically). I was surprised how an extra sheet can be a comfort, but it is. Anyone who watches television has seen the commercials trolling for people to sue doctors who do this "sling/mesh surgery", and I admit those commercials made me think twice before having the surgery. But after having to walk out of a meeting at work after sneezing, I decided to give it a go. My surgery went just as planned, and I had only the expected post-operative discomfort. I followed the instructions to refrain from certain activities, but was able to continue walking for exercise that week. About a month later after my follow-up appointment, I was back in the gym lifting weights and have not had any problem at all. I am beyond happy with the result of this surgery and with Dr. Shashoua's care in general. I recommend him highly to friends, family, and now strangers on Yelp. read more

This doctor's office did not call me at all with the results of some serious tests I had done. I waited a week thinking that if I needed more tests they sure would have called by now. Well, no. Further testing was needed and they did not bother to call. I had the necessary tests done, and again days go by and the office does not call with the results!!! Very unsettling to say the least. Again, after a couple of days knowing they got the results, I had to make endless phone calls to try to get the nurse to call me back. This is the most fantastic doctor I have ever had. I had fibriod tumors that were quite large (my abdomen looked as if I was 5-6 months pregnant, per each doctor I saw). Before I went to Dr. Shashoua I had seen two other doctors. The first told me because of the size of the tumors, I would more than likely have to have a hysterectomy (not an option since I do not have children). She also told me that she would have to do an up and down cut (similar to the old c-section cuts) and not a bikini cut. The second could not even read his own ultra sound (no thank you). Dr. Shoshoua preformed is own ultra sound, read it and diagnosed the type and placement of my tumors all during my first visit. We scheduled surgery immediately. My largest tumor was the size of a small baby and had the shape of a semi deflated basketball (he sent me the pictures). He removed 6-7 total, the large one had to be cut into pieces. I have a small bikini scar along my pelvic line barely visible, approximately 5-6 inches long (oh and I still have a uterus). I can care less about my doctor being my friend; I wanted someone who was competent, knew what they were doing and was confident in their ability. He was all of those things and more. He was thorough, knowledgeable and straight forward. He told upfront what the procedure would be and what I could expect, I have had no surprises yet. Everyday I look at my stomach and scar and pride myself for making the best medical decision I have ever made, choosing Dr. Shashoua. The Best Fibroid Doctor on the Planet. I found out I had fibroids in 2013 after passing out one day because my iron level was so low due to heavy cycles. I had heavy cycles all my life but going from doctor to doctor for years, never knew the cause of the issue. Once I was diagnosed at my local community hospital, I made an appointment at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the summer of 2013 at their OB/GYN specialist. The doctors there are supposed to be the best in the world, however, all they did was prescribe me medicine that would curb the heavy bleeding and they told me that "where your fibroids are located, isn't the cause of your heavy bleeding." I was devastated but still suffering. I moved to Chicago in December 2014. Fast forward to April 2015 when my cycle lasted 30 days. I was weak, exhausted and couldn't focus due to the heavy cycles. I went to one doctor who told me that he saw one fibroid that was the cause. I had a vaginal myomectomy (whatever its called) in June of 2015. I was once again given bad news: there were actually TWO MORE and the one that was removed would not get rid of my issues. He referred me to Dr. Shashoua. He listened to me, looked at my history and did a transvaginal ultrasound my first appointment. He saw the two fibroids and immediately scheduled me for a robotic myomectomy. I had the surgery in September 2015 and there were actually EIGHT fibroids. He gave me pictures, he was kind, gentle and understanding. Of course I was in very bad pain but they took great care of me at the hospital and Dr. Shashoua came to check on me and made sure I got a blood transfusion. I had to spend the night in the hospital one night and my mom came to visit for 10 days. Once I got home, I rested and followed his instructions. Three weeks later I went to my first follow up. He explained the healing process, he checked on my incisions and took the glue off and was amazing!!! The first cycle was horribly painful because I was still healing and he warned me about that. My cycles now last 2-4 days now and aren't heavy at all. I'm going for my follow up next week and will update my review. So excited that I'm healed and have a BETTER than normal cycle, no spotting, no clots and no horrible cramps. I can have babies when I'm ready and all is well. read more

First, I have to commend the timeliness of this appointment. Usually at the gyn, you sit in the waiting room for at LEAST 15 minutes past your appoint. I just took my wife to her first appointment with Dr Shashoua and since the reviews on yelp helped us, thought we'd pay it back. The only downside in our opinion was a considerable amount of wait time before actually seeing him (about 30 mins), but I guess you get that anywhere. Other than that, the staff is very helpful and they speak both English and Spanish. Dr. Shashoua is the best!! I have to write that first and foremost. Last year (September/October 2015) I found out I had uterine fibroids and it was confirmed to me that if I wanted to have children, I needed the fibroids removed. I had three large fibroids to be exact. The size of my fibroids was the equivalent of being five months pregnant. As you can imagine I was in shock, upset, and terrified. I must admit I had never heard of fibroids and I'm embarrassed to admit that I just thought the "extra" weight in my abdomen was from putting on some pounds. I didn't think I had fibroids. After doing extensive online research, I found a bio and interview on Dr. Shashoua and was convinced that I needed to see him to treat my situation. He had stellar reviews on yelp which helped in my decision as well. When I called to make an appointment he was on vacation and once he returned he was booked for a few weeks. I did have to wait a bit to see him but it was worth it. At the time I was devasted because at this point I was very uncomfortable and just wanted these things out of my body. I stuck it out and before I knew it me and my husband were waiting in his office to see him for my first appointment. Let me stress that his entire staff are the nicest and most pleasant. This was so helpful. In talking to the staff I found out that many of them have been working with Dr. Shashoua for years. This was comforting because it showed me that they all knew each other well and have extensive experience. Once I met Dr.Shashoua and discussed my options I felt a sense of relief and complete trust. He is polite, understanding, tells you what the best option is for you and has a confidence that is pretty awesome. He's blunt about things, but in a expertise kind of way. The man knows what he's doing. Period!! A few months before surgery I got two lupron shots to help shrink the fibroids. Fast forward to my surgery on March 25th... I was terrified because I've never had surgery before, but everyone at Illinois Masonic and I mean everyone was amazing during my entire time at the hospital. From the moment I checked in, prep before surgery, during my two day stay, and getting discharged. All the doctors, nurses, and assistants were great. Especially Dr.Shashoua for successfully removing my fibroids. Everything he said would happen has happened. I'm three weeks post surgery and doing great. Dr. Shashoua is awesome!! I have been dealing with severe pain in my left lower abdomen for about 10 years. Because I have been moving around a lot, I haven't had a doctor that was able to pin point exactly what was causing this pain. I had a few tests done over the last few months and found out I have a fibroid. When I went to Dr. Shashoua it was clear that he had read my charts and had been thinking of a plan before I came in. He was very patient with me and listened as I explained my whole history. He is a doctor that likes to see things for himself and ended up doing a quick ultrasound during my appointment to take a look at what was happening. I have never had a doctor do this himself before without sending me to a technician. Although he decided that he doesn't think the fibroid is what is causing my pain, he helped give me a path forward and options of other things to try if what he recommended does not help. It felt great to finally have a path forward instead of just being passed off to another doctor. Dr. Shashoua is the only doctor in the Chicago area who was willing - and did - help me! I had been suffering for years with pain and complications due to severe endometriosis. I saw countless doctors who stated my case was "too far gone" to be able to help. Their only advice was to manage the pain. I was at the point of giving up when someone told me about Dr. Shashoua. He immediately said that he could help me and through his advanced skill and knowledge, he was able to remove the stage 4 endometriosis that was making me so sick. I also had to have a complete hysterectomy which he skillfully did robotically. I am forever grateful that he took a chance to help me - he has changed my life through his ability and expertise. I was referred to Dr. Shashoua by my primary care doctor. Dr. Shashoua took the time to explain the cause of my pain, and offered me an option I didn't even know I had. He was very compassionate & reassuring. He left the decision up to me, and ultimately, gave me the procedure that freed me from the painful periods that were seriously limiting the quality of my life.
