I was very amazed reading all the great things about this doctor. REALLY!?! The same Dr. Shash whose assistants always seem to be more interested in pleasing him than helping the patients? Yeah, he's a cute guy and I guess most of the girls working for him like him in a very questionable way, without regards to the patient's presence. Actually, I have no star for Dr. Ab Shashoua and his practice. My first encounter with him was in 2004 shortly after I had my first child in the hospital where he worked back then. I went in to complain about an abdominal pain/discomfort. He ordered lab tests for me and when he saw the results, he and his very rude assistants simply laughed at me for wasting their time by claiming that something strange was going on in my abdomen. He actually worked out on me while I was still asking him questions (that's him...HE NEVER LISTENS and always in a hurry!). Embarrassed, I took a walk of shame out of the examination room and never made any attempt to see any doctor again. Few years after, I was pregnant with my second child then the abdominal pain became outrageous. That was when my new ob/gyn discovered that I had fibroids (yeap, fibroids are not detected via "lab tests"). After having my baby, my fibroids symptoms remained unbearable and the fibroids have grown so big that people thought I was still pregnant. So my new ob/gyn who happens to be Dr. Shash's boss, happily announced to me that he now has a minimally invasive surgery expert in his team who also specializes in Uterine Fibroids treatment. I was so excited (since I am naturally scared of invasive surgeries). My ob/gyn delivered the bad news by telling me that the name of the great guy is ABRAHAM SHASHOUA! I maintained my cool and decided to give him another chance, especially when my last encounter with him was almost 10 years ago. So I assumed that he is a "better" person now. Unfortunately, I was very, very, WRONG! First, he opened the door on me while I was undressing without apologizing, his assistant had to tell him to give me some time. He left angrily and abandoned me for almost an hour before coming back to me. Then he said, "so why don't you want Hysterectomy?" He also asked his assistant to tell me how well she felt after he did Hysterectomy for her. Well, I insisted that since I have been given many options, I choose the least invasive (non-Hysterectomy) option. After all said, he reluctantly agreed to go on with my choice and said, "I will give you a systemic anaesthesia, but don't be surprised when you wake up and find a big cut in your abdomen because I will simply go ahead and do Hysterectomy if I feel that's what you need." I simply called everything off and walked away. Again, he acted like he was mocking me on my way out. Very mean and unprofessional! read more

Dr. Shashoua is the best of the best--I can't say enough good things about him. I suffered with debilitating endometriosis and Fibroids for years until he took care of me. He changed my life--had no idea what it was like to be pain free until I saw him. He's been my doctor for well over a decade and I will never see anyone else. I can't say how much I love Dr. Shashoua! He is the best Dr. I've had. I had to have a huge cyst removed from my right ovary. At the time I had an ultrasound, it was 12cm. I had surgery on 4-26-13 and I was very nervous! I was so nervous, I had the anesthesiaologist laughing because I came in with EMLA cream on all over me. LOL However, they comforted me and reassured me. I woke up in recovery with no pain. Come to find out, the cyst was the size of a 4 month fetus. WHOOO!!! He removed it through the robotic method and was able to save my ovaries. I love him and his staff!! My only problem I had was that my bladder couldn't wake up after the surgery. Uterine Fibroid Accessa Device The doctor uses the Accessa system which is great. My wife had a choice from her old doctor of hysterectomy to take care of Fibroids; However, with Dr. Shashoua we had options, my wife was back to work within two weeks; if she had had only the accessa she would have been back within 48 hours. I totally get what everybody is raving about. While my previous doctor barely managed to stay in the room after the two minute mark, Dr. Shashoua was patient and clear, and at no point made me feel that I was making him waste his time by talking with me. This may be because it was my first visit, but I don't think so. I'm very happy I switched, and I would encourage others to if they are unhappy with their OB-GYN. I was getting the run around from my previous OBGYN who seemed to be milking my insurance instead of resolving my issue, so I decided to get a second opinion. After seeing a new OBGYN, she recommended a hysterectomy and to see Dr. Shashoua about the davinci surgery at Illinois Masonic. Right from the start Dr Shashoua was excellent, he explained the procedure and really made me feel at ease. The staff at Illinois Masonic couldn't have been better and the new surgery pavilion was beautiful! The procedure went perfect, I spent one night in the hospital and I was back to work in two weeks! I am no longer a patient of Dr. Shashoua's because of one scarring experience. Upon going to my annual Pap smear appointment, I was told it was abnormal and I would have to go into surgery immediately. I was scared and in shock and did not fully understand what the surgery was for, but instead of taking the time to educate me about my own body, I was rushed into surgery with no information. Anxious and scared, I cried during the entire surgery and was in so much pain afterwards I had trouble walking and had to call my partner to leave work, come pick me up and drive me home. It was not until I began going to my current gynecologist (@RUSH) that I finally understood what happened to me on that horrible day. I tell many women about this experience in hopes that they demand their doctors to obtain TRUE informed consent from them instead of rushing in to something as serious as surgery without caring about the needs of the patient. read more

Thank God for Dr. Shashuoa Before meeting Dr. Shashuoa, my quality of life was changing and it wasn't changing for the good. I was lethargic almost all of the time, my iron levels were dangerously low, leaving me unable to sleep. Hence, my days were unfocused and downright hectic. My monthly cycles were beyond painful and very heavy. Experiencing these things, lead me to Dr. Shashuoa. He was very knowledgeable, professional, compassionate, gentle and efficient. After external and internal exams and testing. It was determined that I needed a hysterectomy. This was an emotional decision for me, he knew it would be life changing and he was compassionate and empathetic to my needs and feelings. He recommended a Laparoscopic Hysterectomy. I decided to have surgery on 2/28/17. The surgery was an 1 hour and 45 minutes, Dr. Shashuoa came pre-op to reassure me that every thing would be fine and I were in great hands. Everybody in the operating room gave me a sense of comfort and were very professional. After surgery I was taken to Unit 9 stone at Illinois Masonic hospital, they made my stay as pleasant as possible. They were kind and caring, I trusted them all. Bottom line, I love Dr. Shashuoa... he has changed the quality of my life for the good NOW. My energy level has returned, I've healed wonderfully and the small incisions are minimal. Super Shash to the Rescue! I was hemorrhaging the day after Easter, and Dr. Shashoua put me on bed rest and moved up my surgery date to save me. Since August 2016, I have had constant episodes of heavy bleeding due to a large fibroid. My local gyn had been pushing towards an ablation, but I felt that it was not the right choice for me. Every month was like playing Russian roulette, and I went through several iron infusions before researching fibroid specialists in the Chicago area. I was drawn to Dr. Shashoua's credentials and approach, and was quite impressed by the sheer volume of rave reviews written by his patients. What struck me foremost when I first met this highly-acclaimed surgeon was his spring-like energy and focus. He wasn't distracted by my many questions, stayed sensitive to my concerns, and didn't bottom-line my options until asked. Then this is the important part: when asked, he was straight-up direct with what he thought was best, and I was able to commit to a total laparoscopic hysterectomy. He has no idea what a hard sell I am, and won me over easily. Little did I know that soon after I would find myself in a crisis situation, bleeding profusely and thus threatening my life due to ongoing iron deficiency and other health complications. After reading hundreds of "Hyster Sister" stories, I had a great deal of trepidation, but something in Dr. Shashoua's calm, confident, and soft-spoken appeal soothed my fears enough to go through with it. He quickly responded to all of my emails, and called me when more was needed. At the eleventh hour, I realized that I may not get my own private bathroom at Masonic, and he promised that he would do everything possible to make that happen. He delivered on that promise, which was an enormous relief. He showed me how adept his multi-tasking abilities are, and I felt like I was in the best hands in the country, even though we had only met once. I was a brand-new patient, but was treated with familiarity and the respect of a regular. My recovery has amazed my husband, family, and most of all, me. Small incisions, no bleeding, no swelling, not much bruising...I feel like I was operated on with the most delicate expertise and precision. Moreover, the procedure took place at the end of a Friday afternoon, but the incredible results appear to be the work of a rejuvenated surgeon on a Monday morning after a relaxing weekend! One more note--I was not sure how I would like the hospital. Dr. Shashoua feels that Illinois Masonic is the best hospital in the state--of which I remained unconvinced--until I had to stay there from Friday to Sunday, receiving the kindest, most attentive care from every single staff member I encountered! If you are having female problems and want to get answers and RESULTS you must go to Dr. Shashoua. Mind you, he is a no nonsense kind of doctor and doesn't want to keep "talking" over and over about your problem. I had been hearing over the years I needed a hysterectomy. I am 52 years old and have suffered terribly from fryboids from the age of 25. I was under great care but finally wanted an end to my pain and most importantly wanted an unintrusive opperation. I decided on the DiVinci hysterectomy. Dr. Shashoua is a doctor in Illinois who practices the DiVinci hysterecomy. I also was very vocal about keeping my ovaries. Dr. Shashous was very sensitive about this as one of my ovaries had a large cyst. Other doctors told me I needed a complete hysterectomy. Dr. Shashuou was the ONLY doctor that heard me. He was able to complete my removing of the uterus but was able to to remove my cyst and leave me with two working ovaries! And no Hormone drugs to boot! Amazing and compassionate doctor and team! Words cannot begin to express how grateful I am for finding Dr. Shashoua. From the first meeting with him, he was so kind, friendly, and compassionate. I had been looking for a surgeon for several months who would be able to do a myomectomy for me due to the large uterine fibroids I had. Every doctor I went to so that they would not be able to perform the surgery I needed without doing a hysterectomy. From all of the research I did, I always read that this was a "red flag" because it is easier to just remove a person's entire uterus if the fibroids are large versus doing the more complicated surgery of removing the fibroids while leaving the uterus intact. I knew that this was not an option for me, so I persisted in my search to find a good and qualified surgeon. I cannot even begin to express how relieved I was when I met Dr. Shashoua and he calmly and confidently told me that he could perform the surgery that I needed. After being disappointed by a recommended Gynecologist, who told that my heavy bleeding and pain would eventually subside as I got older, I decided to find a specialist. That is when I discovered Dr. Shashoua. This is one of the best decisions that I have every made. When I met him he asked me what was the problem. I explained to him exactly what I had been told by my previous Dr. He proceeded to give me an exam and told me that I had four fibroids, as well, a condition called and andenomyosis. He assured me that he could perform robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery to get rid of them both. The surgery went off without any complications. I saw 8 other doctors before finding "the one" in Dr. Abraham Shashoua. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable and skilled at what he does but what is equally important is how he treats the patient-like a real, whole person. He was the first to look me in the eye, patiently listen to my story and make a plan to treat my fibroids; and treat them now. He gave me a prescription to begin shrinking the uterus, which he said would help with pain. None of the other doctors even suggested this or any other pain relief methods other than OTC medicines which were ineffective. He also got me in for open myomectomy as soon as possible, fitting me in early in the morning before his prior scheduled surgeries. This is what a real doctor who cares about relieving patient's pain does. He spoke to my family immediately following my surgery-which went smoothly-with compassion. He personally came to see me every day I was in the hospital to answer questions and make sure I was comfortable. Nurses Jasmine, Marge, JC and William provided excellent, empathetic care during my hospital stay. PA Alissa Schiller is also professional, knowledgeable and kind. She called me daily after I was discharged from the hospital. I am so thankful she did or else I might not be here. When I told her about chest pain I was experiencing, she sent me to the ER where I was diagnosed with PE. Again Dr. Shashoua called to check on me. When I submitted concerns or questions through the patient messenger portal, Dr. Shashoua picked the phone up to call me and address them. In the weeks and months after my surgery, the level of follow up remained consistent. He is willing to do whatever it takes to relieve pain and get the patient their life back. And it is not just me that he has helped; it's every patient I talked to that he treated. Luz and all the nurses and reception staff are also very kind and professional. Small touches like fresh floral arrangements in the waiting area make the office welcoming and point to the level of detail and class with which care is given. I am glad to see Dr. Shashoua working with residents; creating a legacy of model healthcare. Just an update from my previous review. I am happy to say that I am still fibroid free and now have a 2 year old and am pregnant with my second child. On 3/27/17 I had a consultation with Dr. Shashoua regarding another surgery. I was first referred to him by a fertility specialist for fibroid removal in March 2016. I had already determined that he would be the surgeon I would see based on the reviews, but still wanted to research who the fertility specialist suggested. Well it was Dr. Shashoua as well. I was very happy & relieved. Before and after my surgery Dr. Shashoua was present and he was very compassionate and I really felt like he cared about my well being. Fast forward to 3/27/17, I had a consultation to have some tissue removed, to move forward with fertility treatments. Dr. S and his team are wonderful! I can not say that enough. I found Dr. S, online and after reading reviews I decided to schedule an appointment with him. I was told that I needed to have surgery from my primary gyne and I only wanted a second opinion. I needed to hear those words from someone else because I was in denial of what was going on with my body. That was my initial intent but after consulting with him, I decided I wanted him to perform my surgery. Dr. S provided me with more information about my condition in one consultation than my gyne, who I had been with for 10 years, had ever given me. From my first appt to my last post op appt.,. Dr. S. and his team truly care for their patients. At one point I had trouble with my insurance company and found out that Illinois Masonic was not in-network. Lisa C. and Dr. S, went above and beyond to try and have my surgery at IM, but to no avail and so Lisa C., arranged for me to go to St. Josephs. I thought I wouldn't see the Dr. after the procedure because of the distance, Dr S. came to visit me every single day that I was there. WOW! I also want to thank Maggie for being professional, caring and understanding. She really made me feel at ease about my decision of when to return to work. There was another CMA that gave me an IM injection (and I can't remember her name, sorry, but Go Bulldogs (she knows what that means. LOL), she was sooo gentle because I had read the IM injections can be painful and I had braced myself for the pain and nothing! I had to ask my husband if she really injected me! LOL. Dr S is incredibly easy to get in contact with, I was able to actually text him and he responded quickly, unheard of. Anytime, post op, that I have had a question or concern, Ive been able to talk to Maggie. I am now 3 months post op and doing well. I was referred to Dr. Shashoua by my primary physician. I generally use female gynes , but thought I'd give it a shot. I had a myriad of complaints (I've had three kids--ladies, you know what I mean). Chief among them was my bladder control and general slackness -- kind of like my uterus could give way at any moment. Dr. Shashoua put me immediately at ease. He discussed options and we made a plan. After surgery, I'm 100% again. I have the quiet confidence of a 23 year old (hurray) and was able to run a half marathon without wetting my running shorts. He's got a great bedside manner; his staff is super personable; and he's easy on the eyes. Sorry that Jen S. had such a rough time. This is my first time ever writing a review, but I felt compelled to tell everyone how truly amazing Dr. Shashoua is. When I chose him to take care of me and my fibroids, I knew I was going to the best, but my recent open myomectomy experience exceeded my expectations! I had been putting off this surgery for a few years, but ever so patient Dr. Shashoua allowed me to come around in my own time and when I made up my mind, he was there every step of the way with me. Turns out I had four HUGE fibroids and the rest varied in size (all 24 of them). He is such a skilled surgeon that I'm only two weeks post op and I feel amazing! He rounded on me every single day in the hospital to make sure that I was doing ok. He gave me a very low bikini-cut incision and I am truly amazed that I do not have a scar. Just an inconspicuous thin line! Prior to surgery EVERYONE I encountered (friends, patients, clinic/hospital staff) told me that I was in good hands and they were absolutely right. This man loves what he does, is the best in his field, takes it very seriously and it shows! I have had fibroids for years and I was told not to worry about them as long as it didn't bother me. My periods were heavy and painful! I hated that time of the month..... I went online and came across Dr. Shashoua's profile. I saw all the great reviews and I knew I had to see this doctor. It was so funny when my doctor at FCI said he was going to refer me to a specialist and it turned out to be Dr Shashoua! I was so happy and relieved the day of my appointment. He listened to me and told me my options. One of the best decision I made... I had my surgery five months ago and everything went well. I have been going to Dr. Shashoua for over ten years and consider his care the best that I have received. It was a great relief to have a doctor with his knowledge help me through menopause. He is professional yet approachable. Dr. Shashoua keeps up with new practices and will suggest an approach or medicine that he thinks will help you without pushing it on you. It is helpful that he has expertise in both urology and gynecology since women often have bladder problems as they age. I referred my daughter to Dr. Shashoua and she is equally happy with his care. I am 60 years old and my daughter is 35. It is nice to have a doctor that patients of varying ages feel comfortable with. My daughter initially had a problem that was not being taken care of properly by another physician. Dr. Shashoua saw her immediately and handled the problem perfectly.
