From a cancer care standpoint, The Abramson Cancer Center in Philadelphia is awesome. The nurses…read moreespecially are amazing. What isn't great is that the rooms seem to be designed by someone completely clueless to the fact that sick people are living there for months at a time. There are no creature comforts, only a tiny cupboard and cabinet to store a meager amount of belongings. A rock hard sofa. A shower that allows water to run every where on the floor of the bathroom. No shelves, no tackqble surfaces to hang pictures or cards from well wishers. NO pantry area for families to prepare food or get drinks or ice. You must ask the nurses for everything except for a few microwaves here and there. On top of that, food services seem to have been trained in food preparation decades ago and are almost unaware of the plethora of food allergies and sensitivities people have in this day and age. The cafeteria is a wealth of deep fried and unhealthy and processed foods. The servers are insensitive and unhelpful to people with food sensitivities. I was blown away by the lack of choices and supplemented my sick sister with homemade food that I drove an hour each way to deliver. Some days she was told they had no food for her--a cancer patient!! SAD

When my dad & I have questions they try to answer them to their best ability. I've recommended this department to people who are asking in sarcoma & cancer groups on Facebook. When I messaged them on the portal they usually respond with in 24 hrs or less sometimes. At most I think I've waited for a response was 2-3 days. There building is right near 800 spruce st. They're at the farm journal building right before the hospital.

It's adjacent to the Constitution Center and the Liberty Bell so there's always something to do if you arrive early to avoid a traffic jam or other delays that pop up unexpectedly. There's also plenty of tourists around so for someone like me lots of people to strike up a conversation with. Today my phlebotomist was Jennifer, she was so friendly, very proficient at her skills and she was sporting some very fashionable red shiny athletic shoes. If Dorothy wasn't so hung up on those clickable healed shoes these would be her kicks! My nurse was Chevon who was also very pleasant. This location part of Penn Medicine runs very smoothly. I have never had a wait longer than 15 minutes past my appointment time. Courtney & Michael handle the coordination of infusions and a lot of other things. The reception (check-in & check-out) staff are all also kind, helpful and efficient. Dr. David H. Henry, MD is my practitioner here and he is professional, kind, thoroug and is in and out like a flash unless your health warrants a longer visit. He is very familiar with your case, your medical history and current issues before entering the room. They draw labs before you go into the exam room and have some results in minutes so the doctor gets a good evaluation of you the day of your visit. This team makes a difficult situation as pleasant as possible.

On a recent first visit to the Gastroenterology Dept, I parked in the East Lot for the first time and walked up the ramp to the main building only to find two elderly men sitting behind the desk in grey uniforms that appeared to identify them as part of the Maintenance Dept. When I asked for directions to the Gastro Dept - they had NO IDEA! Next, I approached a staff member at a desk outside the entrance for Breast Cancer patients. She pointed me in the direction of the Young Pavilion. After a VERY LONG walk that took me in almost a full circle, I finally found the Gastro Dept - only to be greeted by a receptionist on the phone who refused to make eye contact of acknowledge my presence in any way. I would've be happy for just a smile - but NOTHING. After sitting for a while, I went to the rude receptionist who was still on a call that was - apparently - more important than greeting patients. I stood over her until her finally made eye contact but not with a smile. Instead, she snarled, "I'm on a call! This lack of staff training is inexcusable at a nationally recognized cancer hospital!

We have successfully been treated for medical problems from anxiety to cancer. If you have not had success getting better or getting well, try this integrative approach to medical help. Every person at this center is highly trained, professional, wonderful and very caring!

From the very beginning of this process is deceptive! Julie N told the truth in her review. First I…read moresaw other reviews about blood work cost and email the center that I want to cancel my appointment because I was very afraid of them running test that would not be covered as they do not take insurance. So Gail called and left me a VM which I saved that it would not be "by any means a large bill for blood work and perhaps the person's review I read was for someone had cancer but not to worry as Laura would go through each test with me to give me a self pay rate" so that I could make an informed decision. I specially said I would need the amount of the blood work before doing it-so I was assured that Laura would go over it with me. Arrived on time fasted and waited 45 minutes to be seen, spoke with the doctor as I was there for BHRT and informed her that I would need a breakdown of the blood test they are going to run, she told me "Oh of course you will meet with Laura the clinical care coordinator what ever that IS! Finished with doctor and was taken to the lab-mind you it is now 1245 appt was 10:30am and I have not eaten since the day before at 5:30pm-I said to the blood draw women I can't have ANY test down without knowing the cost and where is Laura-they said she is busy-I said then forget it and went to leave after spending 600 for the visit but then by a miracle Laura was available and I told her the same I CAN NOT DO BLOOD WORK without a self pay rate or GFE-she said "well we will use your insurance" I said I still need to know what the cost was for the 15 different blood test and that the lab was out of network" So she barely wrote on the form anything. By this time I am on th phone with my husband saying I am leaving as. they are not giving me a breakdown like they said they would-so the peach Laura is said here take this to labcorb and you can call your insurance with the codes but since the guardian shield is "free"doctor CM told me the same I should "at least get that done" Ok so I did-at check out the bill seemed high as I told doctor CM I will get my supplements elsewhere I do not want them from them, she said "oh yes if yo can save money get them anywhere you want" well after getting in. my car in a rush because now it's 125pm-I had my own patient I had to see. They actually charged me 170 dollars for supplements and never gave them to me! I call they said "come on back" Well, I couldn't that day as I spent 3 hrs there! Then it took four phone calls and 7 days for them to call the script in to the pharmacy-no call back-nothing/again called Laura and Laura did not give me a script for labcorb soooooooo another VM left for Laura-no call back. Also while I was in the waiting room I saw the one women put the phone down while a patient was complaining about the bill for GUESS WHAT Blood work. I almost left but I was sooo in need of BHRT so I stayed against my better judgement-mind you I am a psychotherapist, work in oncology and hospice and a medical malpractice law firm so believe me my story is truthful-I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO USE THIS PLACE-SOCIOPATHY IN MY OPINION! They will charge you for a brief one line email as well. THEN THE KICKER they did a panel for lyme which I NEVER CONSENTED TOO! NEVER (875.00 later)-Just the free test which came back as not going through due to "LAB ERROR" if YOU BELIVE THAT BS! Gail told me and that when I come back they can do it again! I said no thank you! Also on my print out from them there is no ORDER for lyme/anything panel-I just had a lyme test three days before which I told the doctor----the blood work that I DID NOT CONSENT TO was denied due to out of network lab which is WHY I ask Laura Gingrich for a labcrob script and that I do not want ANYTHING RUN WITH MY BLOOD BUT THE FREE ONE "might as well have it it's free says Laura and conveinlty was not processed due to lab error!! RIGHTTTTTT. STAY FAR AWAY

Through that lens this place is the absolute BEST. Dr shields is world leading, and I know I am blessed to be only a few hours away from the best care I could hope and pray for. Be prepared to just hold your breath, close your eyes, and go to your "happy place" when you are here. The office is insanely busy. The desk folks reflect that and are short and borderline rude. The medical staff is efficient and skilled. Remember you're here for medical care. Plan to get your emotional needs met elsewhere. The wait will be long and your time with dr shields a scary and horrifying buildup as her staff cower and jump for the 60 seconds or so she'll be in the room with you. But after a year coming here I believe none of this is a reflection on their care. They are insanely busy because they are the BEST and need to see as many patients as possible. Don't take it personally. You're not special, you're there for the best medical care possible. To end on a high note, I am thoroughly impressed how seamless the relationship is between shields and Jefferson oncology. They make it very easy to share and coordinate information, appointments, etc.
